There was a smart lock a while ago that didn't use standard keys. So if you made a replacement key, unless the locksmith really knew what they were doing, you got a key that couldn't open the lock. You could still rake it open though

Yeah, LPL is very skilled, but you can open most locks if you practice a few hours. Not in seconds of course, but a 2 minute picking is still a lock opened and a great sense of achievement. I opened a mailbox with a 1.5 hex wrench and a screwdriver. Since then I carry a basic kit, because it wasn't really comfy. We bought a mailbox and they didn't sent the keys. Or at least we thought. I picked it and the keys were there but stuck under a fold. Took a nice 5 minutes, but I'm still proud.

I had a suitcase with the same design flaw as a kid. It was my first experience with lock picking, because someone had changed the combination behind my back and locked the case. It was the age before the internet, so we brought it to a shop in the hopes that they would know how to open it. They didn't, but they phoned someone. They didn't really understand the explanation, but I did. From then on I could decode all combination locks with that flaw. It's pretty baffling that a company like Abus still makes this same mistake in a new design.
@klausstock8020
@klausstock8020 Жыл бұрын
It's a general issue with combination locks - but it's more serious with bike combination locks, by design. A keyway can be sealed with a rubber cap easily (or a housing with a slider or something similar), but the rather large dials on a combination lock are a totally diffrent story. You need to be able to get a good grop on the dials, so they must be freely accessible all way around. A rubber cap which seals the whole dial assembly and can be completely removed easily will be prone to loss, and still awkward to handle during normal operation. So bike combination locks require larger gaps so they can endure a lot of dirt and still be operated with bare fingers (or gloved fingers) even in freezing temperatures. I've seen much better Abus combination locks, for stationary use, securely away from dirt.
@DerAlex86
@DerAlex86 Жыл бұрын
@@klausstock8020 Couldn't they just add a gear to the wheel (where currently they have the programming/checking mechanism), and hide the actual programming/checking mechanism somewhere behind the wheel mechanism?
@klausstock8020
@klausstock8020 Жыл бұрын
@@DerAlex86 They could do that, possibly even without making the assembly of the lock in the factory too complicated (of course, I can only guess how it's assembled). And yes, Abus does offer offer combination locks with tighter tolerances which are harder to decode. But these are locks which are meant to be mounted on a door or a wall, and not to be carried on a bike which is then subjected to the dirt roads of, let's say, a forest path (Abus is a German company, and German forests are generally dirty). My "best" bike combination lock was a simple (and cheap!) three-digit lock which was really hard to decode. Even though the model was generally very weak and we decoded locks of this model usually within seconds as kids. My lock, however, had been exposed to the elements and dirt for so many years on a daily basis that it had become very hard to decode. It had also become very hard to open if you knew the combination. Turning the dials seriously hurt the fingers, and in very cold and wet conditions it became nearly impossible. So I guess bike combination locks have to remain a compromise: secure enough to stop a casual prankster (like us when we were kids) or thief while still allowing the owner to open it even under bad conditions - all while retaining a reasonable price tag. It's never about maximum security after all, it's just that it needs to be better than the lock on the next bike. Thieves will use bolt cutters anyway, or steal the whole bike rack.

This has been an issue with many of those types of bike locks. For the past 35-45 years now. I figured this out back in 85. You do not need the light. There is a slight wiggle that will, depending on the interior design, go away when you hit the correct number or no wiggle that will wiggle when the number is correct. A little practice and it is very easy to feel the difference. Some you need pressure pulling on the release.

This is surprising. Abus usually makes decent locks. I guess they figure pretty much any combination lock has about as much security as a zip tie, and it is what it is. German engineering has been in decline since the 1970s. At the same time deception from German sellers is at an all time high. One you may already know about is the volume scam. It is legal for "thermos flask" advertised as 400ml to only hold 320ml but because the outside displaces 400ml. German law allows sales of it to buyers outside of Germany (anywhere else in the EU and the rest of the world) but not in Germany itself. That same "volume scam" loophole is used to sell everything from water and soft-drinks to toothpaste and prescription medicines.

I've learned it from this channel. It seems just for basic security the only good bets are a good keyway or a digital with no physical backup that's made by a company smart enough with locks to not be made of plastic or allow a battery door to open the lock or unscrew it to pieces until the shackle is freed. Which is unfortunately super rare. I love the Nest by Yale deadbolt for that reason. No keyway, the only backup for a dead battery is a contact point of a 9v battery to charge the lock enough to get it open after it's internal battery had died.

Normally I'd assume that the factory set code would be printed on the inside, or maybe it would be all 0's or something easy. But with that design (and especially that flaw), someone could change it and impact a future customer who buys it.
