Hey Darrin and Lisa. Thank you for the great shout-out. I feel honored to be the first sticker, and it looks great on your splitter. I picked up a few subs too. I'm still crossing Newfoundland by atv and we have a cabin with wifi, first time in 7 days lol. Thanks again guys and thankyou everyone for the kind comments. Kenny

Darrin, I was talking to a guy that said that you don't want trees close to the pond. He told me that the tree roots will look for water and will make a hole in the pond. Then if the tree dies the roots will let the water follow the dead tree roots and it will leak. I Hope this helps. 😄 8/5/23

Good decision on the log purchsse, it makes sense when doing a larger volume of firewood. Sorry to hear about the pond, we almost put a pond in when we had an excavator doing our woodyard. After seeing several channels having issues with ponds, im glad we didn't. Stay cool and hydrated.

@woodruffwoods Our excavator told us the only sure way he could guarantee no leaks was with a liner, and that was a little pricey even for a 1/4 pond.

I was almost sure this would not leak but it seems that the clay on the deep end isn't holding. I am not sure what a liner costs but I am sure that I do not want to put more money into this project.

Not a bad profit for sure. Plus the wear and tear on the truck and equipment. Surprised the pond leak with all that clay. But again I am no pond expert. Hopefully you get it straighten out before winter. Yes Kenny is a great guy.

I am surprised as well. I think we just didn't build out that berm enough to support the 1000's of gallons of water.

I don't know what it is with ponds in Pennsylvania, but they sure have trouble holding water! Loads of logs at that price are nice for sure...they're perfect for running through a ....oh wait....is this foreshadowing something coming to the woodyard???

Thanks for sharing the economics. You could make some kindling out of the pine, but I’m w/ you on rather dealing with hardwoods. Especially being located in NEPA. Sorry about the pond.
@woodruffwoods Жыл бұрын
I will figure out this pond one way or another but it is disappointing. As for the pine, I think I may either do kindling or maybe just burn it outside in the fire pit. It offers a nice flame and easy to light. My only reservation is cooking in the same pit that I burned pine in.

This year, I have spent the most on wood. The 1 benefit i see it is already here waiting for me vs me going out to get it..
@woodruffwoods Жыл бұрын
If you are selling wood then buying it is the best deal. There is a lot of wear and tear on equipment just getting it to the woodyard.
@DanielAtkinsFirewood Жыл бұрын
@woodruffwoods : I think this is a tricky issue.. when I 1st started I couldn't afford to pay for wood, but gasoline and insurance for the truck was cheaper. Now I am in a place where buying wood is cheaper, now I am in the middle of this so it can go either way . Plus, my tree service friends' log yard is only 20 minutes away from me. Soo I can understand both sides of this topic
@davidedwards3734 Жыл бұрын

buying delivered logs or acquiring free delivered logs is the way to go. Cut, split and stack all in the same location, i doesn't get easier for a wood cutter.

I am definitely learning that lesson.

Sucks about the pond, I’m not sure anyone builds a pond that doesn’t face some sort of setbacks. Logs are the way to go if you can get them! Saves alot of time and wear on your truck and trailer.

Years back i used to go am cut the trees down for people had to clean up load it back and forth loading dumping then haul equipment it was a lot of work just to get the wood home, then cut and split, i only buy logs or a friend has a lot of ash that will bring me cut at 16/17 inch pieces he just borrows my trailer ,i have no time in it just split it, a neighbor of a friend ,i do not even know the guy my friend asked if i could help him and neighbors trees, i went over cut the trees down cut into pieces split with my splitter that i hauled over, he said i was splitting the stuff to big, stuff 4 inches he wanted in half because it wont burn, it was standing dead ash,we did 3 big trees that day my friend told me thank you a lot the neighbor did not even say thank you, just wanted to know when i could come over and do more trees, if it were my friend i would help out, but i will not be back at his neighbors, and he kept the wood, broke a chain and bent a bar not knowing he was cutting on the other end and it twisted, he was using a plug in saw, i told him to just move stuff, bu he wanted to cut, i cut 10-15 pieces for every 1 of his, but getting back with the logs i can cut and split all in the same place, after all done i think i was way ahead a little less profit but a lot back in time. now i dont have to haul things around and can tell people i dont do freebe jobs, unless its a good friend or a job that pays and it has to be worth it take care
@woodruffwoods Жыл бұрын
Larry I can totally relate to this story. I moved all my equipment to a house for two weekends of work. I probably took down 12-20 trees, trimmed them, bucked them, and when I went back to collect the wood he had given all of the premium stuff to his friends. All that was left was the limb wood. We were really clear that the payment was me taking all of the wood but he stuck it to me. Needless to say, no more favors for that guy.

@woodruffwoods Жыл бұрын
You cannot beat oak and hickory for firewood. Excellent burn qualities for both species. You are right about the price. It was a deal that I had to pursue.
@oldguyfirewood Жыл бұрын
Hey Darrin. We’re thinking alike. In my last video I found a source for kiln dried oak, cut and split for $170 a cord. It will need to be re-split but I’ll probably be doing more of that. Sorry to see the problems with the pond. I’ve been following Adam and his pond woes… hate to see you going through the same.
@daveed2812 Жыл бұрын
I own 100s of acres, I have tractors and equipment and its still more feasible and profitable to buy wood for my firewood business than cutting on the property 1st is i can give my specifications and that is what i get. if i cut on the property i end up with allot of species i dont want 2 is that if i cut on the land it involves quite a bit of time and additional costs. labor fuel wear on the equipment etc! 3 The loggers here will buy standing wood at 40-60$ per cord, they sell at 100-130$ per cord so the real difference is 50$-60$ per cord ,witch is not very much to cut, yard and truck the wood… the only way to have a lower cost from wood off the property is not paying yourself for the wood. 😂

I think a lot of us value our time a zero and that really isn't fair. With my parent's property and mine, I am always going to have blow down to clean up but buying the logs actually gives me more time to do that.
