Thanks! At age 62 I have gained 15 pounds of muscle back in the last two years, up from 165 to 180 pounds. I used to be a rock solid and fit 195 a decade ago but lost a lot of that weight and muscle due to my work and some health orientated dietary changes. I got waaay too light! My protein intake is high, at least a gram per pound of body weight to make gains. I have always lifted weights, but have really attacked the gym in the last two years. I am 5'11, 180 pounds, 16% BF, 32 inch waist, 15 inch biceps. I can do 4 sets of pull-ups if 10, 8, 8, and 6. I can did a 45 pound plate 10x, etc. I lift 5-6 days a week and have 3 workouts, Push Day, Pull Day, and Leg Day. Thanks for sharing! I feel better now! LIFT WEIGHTS!!

Thank you for clearing this up. I'm 68 and have a fitness trainer, working to get strong. I lift weights and do HIIT. I have a macro that I've been following and was so surprised that I need to eat so much more protein than I ever have! In the back of my mind, I was a bit worried. My father died from kidney failure so I had demonized protein in my mind. I prefer to use food to get all my protein (rather than supplements) which adds up to a lot of chicken, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, tofu, tempeh and yogurt!!! 😆

There are many things far worse for your kidneys then protein. Do your research on what to avoid.

As a 62 year old, aspiring competitive Bodybuilder, I eat one gram of protein for every one pound of body weight. So, if you weigh 200lbs. You need to eat 200 grams of protein. If you’re looking to put on muscle mass, don’t rely on just protein shakes. Protein is always turning over in your body. Eat clean foods and your body will thank you!

I once tired increasing my protein with training but it didn't make much difference. Some protein powders(weight gain) are far too high in lactose and it can really cause digestion problems in some people. Training is the main factor in building muscle. Surprising I don't feel people need a high level to build muscle. All the bodybuilding magazines are full of steroid users making it out that protein built their huge body but it isn't true. More than someone not wanting to build muscle but I feel everything is overdone. Electrolytes and carb glycogen levels are hardly mentioned and are much more important to training and development than protein.

For a person with kidney stones (say, calcium stones) and a family history of kidney stones, would you make any changes to your recommendation of protein intake for masters athletes? The recommendations I’m finding say to limit protein (not sure by how much), and to particularly avoid animal protein, so I guess that would include a vegetarian diet and whey shakes :-/
@GreySteel5 жыл бұрын
This is one of those pervasive recommendations based almost entirely on surrogate data and physiological reasoning. I am familiar with only TWO randomized controlled trials of limiting animal protein intake to decrease stone recurrence. Hiatt et al found that the group treated with low animal protein and high fiber diet had a higher recurrence rate (12/50) than the controls who ate whatever TF they wanted over 4 years. Borg etal compared a low calcium diet (i.e., free of milk and dairy products) with a low-animal protein diet. After 5 years, recurrence in the first group was 23/60, and 12/60 in the second group, but the data could not discriminate the low protein effect from the low calcium effect. The data with good patient-oriented outcomes on this issue is almost nonexistent, and what we do have is rife with confounders and bias. What does seem clear is that adequate fluid intake is, on balance, overwhelmingly more important than any other lifestyle intervention. If I passed a stone, I'd just have extra water with my Big Chicken Dinner. YMMV.

I've had kidney stones for 32 years. I'm 51 and when I was 47 I found out I had high blood calcium after going to an endocrinologist. After some blood work and CT scans I found out that I had one or more bad Parathyroid glands. I had a Parathyroidectomy and 2 were removed. My blood calcium levels went back to normal and I haven't had a kidney stone in 3 years. I can honestly say I've passed more than 50 stones as an adult so this was a huge relief.

Thanks for the video, I am a new subscriber. Unfortunately, the message about the "best" diets are very confusing to the average person. For example: almost all health / fitness thought leaders will agree on a few things: fruits and vegetables are good for us, exercise is good for us. Of course, smoking, drugs, alcohol, improper amounts of sleep are bad. After that, things get confusing. Is exercise marginally good unless it is HIIT? Is eating animals products at all bad for us? I don't have all, or even some of the answers that's why I listen in. Thanks again.

@sullydawg7 жыл бұрын
We WANT to stimulate mTOR in the setting of training. I'm not worried about protein + training promoting a clinically significant increase in cancer risk. The data on protein -->cancer is very sketchy and methodologically unimpressive, imo. THe data on poor protein intake -->sarcopenia and frailty, OTOH, is as clear as day.

@GreySteel7 жыл бұрын
No. Remember that protein synthesis is an energy-consuming process. Every time you hook one amino acid to another, you're consuming ATP. And even in people who are training hard and have very avid muscle protein accretion, some small fraction of totally energy is coming from protein catabolism. Anabolism and catabolism always coexist; they are never even remotely absolute, except in the most grave circumstances.
