With all the health, fitness, and nutrition information you could ever possibly need just a Google search away, it's amazing that there are still so many myths about what goes on in your body and your mind in pursuit of better health. Too often, though, more information leads to more confusion, not less.
Jose Antonio, PhD, CEO of the International Society Sports Nutrition and a researcher at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, puts the following common misconceptions to rest. RIP, bro science.
| 11 Popular Fitness Myths Debunked |
1. High-Protein Diets Are Bad For Your Kidneys: The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. In contrast, here at Nova Southeastern, we have data showing that if you're a trained male bodybuilder and consume 3.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day (four times the RDA), you'll experience no harmful effects to your kidneys, liver, or blood lipids.
2. High-Protein Diets Leach Calcium From Your Bones: This myth about high-protein diets says that consuming too much of it can make your bones brittle and weak. We have done studies up to six months in length that looked at the effect on the bones of women who consumed 2.5-3.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (about three times the RDA). We found no decrease in bone health. In fact, the data suggested that if women eat a high-protein diet, they may increase their lumbar bone-mineral density.
3. Muscle Soreness Is Caused By A Buildup Of Lactic Acid: You might have heard a massage therapist saying, "Today, I'm going to massage the lactic acid out of your muscles so you won't be sore." Sorry to burst their bubble, but lactic acid, aka lactate, has nothing to do with delayed-onset muscle soreness. DOMS is primarily caused by doing eccentric loading or negatives, or by doing exercises that tax your muscles in new ways. In either case, the soreness comes from micro tears in your muscle fibers.
Lactate isn't a metabolic poison and it doesn't cause soreness. In fact, it's a fuel source used by your heart, brain, muscles, and kidneys.
4. You Lose More Fat By Decreasing Fats…Or Carbohydrates
5. Taking Creatine Causes Cramps And Dehydration
6. Women Who Strength-Train Get Big And Bulky
7. Artificial Sweeteners Are Bad For You
8. It Doesn't Matter How Much You Eat, As Long As You Eat "Good Food"
9. You Have A Few Hours After Your Workout To Get Your Protein
10. Caffeine Is A Diuretic Agent That Can Lead To Dehydration
11. The Best Way To Lose Body Fat Or Weight Is Through Exercise

Totally, and it is clearly demonstrated by the anabolic window question, where they say that you should buy a protein shake and drink it ASAP after workout for possible benefit. They kind of "forget" to say that possible benefit, if there even is any, can come after doing this consistently for years and is in margin of few percent of extra results to someone that doesnt do this. Eating more protein in total daily, with no regard to timing, is cheaper, more convenient , and has significantly higher impact. Simply sad: protein shake after workout vs cheese any time of the day as you plese: Cheese is cheaper, more convenient, gets much better results. But you gotta sell that protein somehow right? :D

Unfortunately the lack of citation is tremendous, and a lot of the information given is either inaccurate or flat out false. However, this video used in tandem with other sources can allow you to discern the fact from the falsehood. Independent extensive research is important.

@@chosenrubric7308 Every single thing he said here is evidence based. Anyone who needs citations these basic facts is clearly not well versed in the scientific literature. This is a short KZbin video not a master's thesis, do your own research if you want to refute. Spoiler alert: he is correct on every point.
@chosenrubric7308

@@r.i.a.n.63 I would love to do my own research to refute it! In fact, my forte is analyzing research methods. I'm studying Biology so it's kind of a requirement I do so. Obviously I can't, though, because the bloke hasn't cited his sources, so I can't analyse any research papers because I could be getting the wrong one(s). :) However, one that really irks me: - Lactic acid. The author says that Lactic acid does not contribute to muscle soreness. This is only half true. While it is, correctly so, said to be a source of energy, Lactate can build up to levels where the body removes it at an insufficient rate, contributing to muscle inhibition and muscle weakness, because it's not broken back down into glucose, therefore cannot be reused for energy. This causes Lactic Acidosis [1] So does lactate cause muscle soreness? No, but it does contribute to long term muscle weakness, and since the two are closely associated, this particular "myth" can be very misleading, especially to a layperson, which this video is obviously aimed at.

I agree, and I also feel like from my own research, some of these things are obviously not going to be the same for everyone. Each person's body may react differently, depending on many different factors, like medication, family history and genes, allergies and diet restrictions, etc. It sounds like a good guideline, though.

You workout to build muscle and eat right to lose the weight. Building muscle helps your body lose the weight faster because it takes energy to feed the muscles, so the more muscles you have, the more you lose weight while sleeping.

@Tom Reid Well we're not sure if we can believe that because lo and behold, corporations fund biased research all the time, much like what the sugar industry did and look where that led people. A conflict of interest means this guy has direct benefit to gain for giving you this information, therefore be wary. Frankly as someone who does research in a medical field, I rarely believe studies unless I see the paper myself and all the variables involved.

This is so informative! And definitely not just a big supplements advertisement. I'm so glad this highly qualified professional is saying there isn't really an anabolic window, but that I should take protein right after working out just...well...because. So nice to see quality information from fitness professionals that haven't sold out in any way!! I mean, surely he's just aiming to project science-based information with no financial motive at all. Thanks doc! I can't wait to see what comes next from this fine channel. I bet it'll be a video on the effectiveness of BCAAs. Because they totally work. So excited. I'm gonna go hit some Glutamine. In this essay I will tackle several issues with this video. Firstly, lactate/lactic acid. Lactate has everything to do with the immediate muscle burn from exercise. It is a result from glycolysis only (anaerobic) metabolism in your muscle cells, because they are having to work quickly to keep up with energy demand. Delayed onset soreness is from micro muscle tears as the result of exercise, which will be repaired. The repair usually results in stronger muscle. Glucose is a cell's preferred fuel, period; your heart and muscles don't use lactate at resting state because there is no reason to. Other things will be burned or utilized during exercise when your glucose stores are low, including fat, ketones, etc. This was something he could have elaborated on much better, because his explanation as-is oversimplified cellular metabolism. In the studies about protein and kidney damage, notice how he neglects to mention how long the high protein diet lasted. That matters. If this study was short term, then the results should also be tested long term. Because effects may only be seen long-term, but not in a three week study. Was there a control group, and what was their diet? He didn't say. Same with the bone calcium study. How long? What studies were these? You don't even give us first-author's names so we can look them up if we are interested. Also lets take a second to look at the fact that this guy has two conflicts of interest: it is put out by a website about body building, and he is a CEO of a sports nutrition company. If you want information about fitness and supplements, I highly suggest you do your own browsing instead of going to a company website that is trying to sell you something. Google Scholar is free and wonderful! But in the world of PhD education and publications, your conflicts of interest are clearly labeled on your published paper, either on the front page or near the acknowledgment section; it depends on the journal. I don't see his conflicts clearly labeled here, and they should be labeled exactly as "conflicts of interest" in either the description or credits of the video. That should worry you. I am also seeing in the comments that this guy was previously associated with Marlboro. I haven't fact checked that, but it is a reminder that it's important to check out the past and current associations of the people you are taking information from. The university he works for? Never heard of it. It is real, but it is a pretty obscure school if you don't live in Florida. That being said, he has given a couple points of good advice, namely about overeating and about how much a caloric deficit and food quality really matter. Like, yeah, you can lose weight eating little Debbies three meals a day If you keep a calorie deficit, but oh my god that would be awful. But that information is readily available from google searches. It is so simple even WebMD knows it. And at least their health posts are peer reviewed. This video? No idea, but probably no peer review. No references... ending "bro science"? Hardly, because I don't see any actual science referenced here. And as a Biomedical Sciences PhD student, I am quite frankly disappointed and not impressed. I know that I really didn't have to take the time to comment, but bad science communication and not disclosing conflicts of interest properly really winds me up.

The high protein while maintaining your calories is so true. I follow IIFYM, but my macros are flexible since I just set a level of protein and calories and avoid going below the protein threshold or above the caloric one. I got the leanest I've been in my life by eating a bunch of sweets and junk but making sure I eat a minimum of x grams of protein per day.

I took creatine for 10 years or so on and off. It works great with my muscularity but over time it started to bother my stomach. I would quit taking it for a while and the stomach problem would go away. I tried the pill and also taking it mixed in protein powder. Same thing after a while I would develop a dull aching pain . So now I take nothing. It's to bad because that stuff really works.

really good video. and i cant tell you how many times i have to tell my clients it doesn't matter what diet you do it's about calorie sin versus calories out. The number of arguments i get into people about keto dieting and why it's no different if anything slightly worse for a beginner for weightloss is too damn high. Didn't mention the fact that during your 1 hour workout session in which you might burn a few hundred calories, you are also building muscle which makes your body more calorie intensive to run daily and therefore easier to reach a calorie deficit and burn fat with the new diet. Although the point overall that diet is more important and efficient is right he made exercise seem nearly pointless for fat loss which is really misleading

I used to be a competitive cyclist and all the racers I knew well who took creatinine had cramping problems and the guys who didn’t take it had little to no muscle cramps. The cramps actually caused some guys to be cramped up in the bushes during a race on several occasions which never happened to the non creatinine guys. It’s not very scientific but it’s real world experience from multiple athletes.

Excellent segment. The only myth I would take issue with is the 1st one you mention. Yes, for bodybuilders, protein intake isn't much of an issue, but for the average person, too much protein, not enough other nutrients and dehydration can indeed damage the kidneys via rhabdomyelisis. Hydrate and eat a balanced diet. The rest will take care of itself.
@courtenaylewis8418
@courtenaylewis8418 4 жыл бұрын
Mid-Life Crisis Fitness I think you may have the populations mixed up. The only population that needs to worry about protein intake are people with renal failure. Protein itself is not a source of dehydration, either. Rhabdo is not something that just happens in isolation. It is caused by rigorous, unaccustomed exercise (especially while dehydrated) or a medical condition, not protein intake. In theory, too much of ANY nutrient can cause people to be deficient in other areas - but in today’s western diet, it’s more likely processed carbs that are limiting intake of healthier nutrients, not protein.

@@thehumblepundit9790 Please help explain. It says above that the individuals are healthy and young, so no kidney disease; and are eating too much protein, resulting in not enough nutrients and also resulting in dehydration; and, without any other factors mentioned, are then hospitalized with rhabdo; and the only explanation you provided for this cascade is high protein?
