I admire IDEO since I started reading Tim Brown's 2009 book, Change by Design. Although I was not familiar with his work, Tom Kelley has now become a mentor to me, next to Donald Norman and Tim Brown. Excellent job guys, I'll be following your work from now on.

Friends, our one request from the High Resolution community is that if you've been waiting for the perfect episode to share with your non-designer colleagues and friends, make it this one. Tom just has a way of reaching through the screen and bringing people along with him. We were incredibly proud of this interview with Tom, who's someone both of us look up to as a mentor. Enjoy this episode.

Could I make a UX request? A lot of the content in your vids is absolutely fantastic and would actually be great to have around for future reference, but the conversation tends to flow in different directions and if I come back to find info on a particular topic I have to skim through the video to find it (assuming I can remember which video it was in). Would it be possible to include timestamps in the video description for the various topics of discussion in a given video?

yes add some timestamps please, you might get more views if we can find the content we are looking for much easier

Great questions, guys! Super interesting conversation! Of course, no question that from the professional perspective and contentwise he is on top and has always something to think about. For me, his grateful, positive and happy character is also as inspiring as what he says!

As always inspirational talks from IDEO in particular from David and Tom. Their words really empowers you to think big and try. I think they have done a lot of service to the design community interms of books like "Creative Confidence". This book is #1 suggestion from me for new designers and it really boosts their confidence. Thank you guys for bringing this incredible talk to us!

As a professional anthropologist I find this fascinating. I stumbled upon this series looking for some project management tips for creatives. Trying to understand their processes to glean some insights that I can apply to a few interdisciplinary projects I’m tackling. Didn’t expect to hear a full throated exultation of our methods. Sounds like they’ve adapted aspects of the ethnographic method. Hmm, maybe I need to leave my field and consult for tech startups.

Really liked this interview. Being a first tier designer at a government contracting business makes it very difficult to sell design as important compared to the hundreds of programmers and business analysts that are hired. Design is acknowledged at my company, but not pursued. I have been 8 years at my company and had to fight to keep my design position alive by jumping from contract to contract within the company. The challenge is to convince government officials and contractor management how important design is for the long-term future of government and businesses involved. When people think of government they often think of it as slow and lacking innovation and creativity. Design, as mentioned in this interview, is now in the boardrooms and is starting to get noticed and taken seriously. I am basically learning everything from the ground up, from UI to UX. I have done web and advertising for years but UI/UX and modern Digital Design world is moving full steam ahead and I am trying to catch up and grasp all the important elements that matter in the Design industry so I can remain relevant. If you were in my position what would your approach be if you were in a government job as a designer? How would you sell the importance of design?

great talk from a a year ago: my favorite part was when he said the three circles ( design, business and technology) should be the same size. It made so much sense to me as I was always a bit skeptical at only focusing on the user and the experience, of course they are extremely important but it's quire reassuring to hear from an industry leader that we need a balance of the three, it's something quite hard to figure out but definitely true because all the empathy, research and care you put into your users wouldn't be very useful if there are no ways of developing what you have designed ( technology ) or if your idea is not profitable or sustainable, then you cant actually make it a reality ( business).

Aspergic people make great 'design thinkers' because they have had to learn how people 'are' and 'do' and 'be' from the outside due to not 'getting it' intuitively growing up. Like an alien in a human suit trying to get along on planet Earth with no guide book. Tom Kelley is a prime example.
