Here is my understanding and summary for this lecture: The art of innovation is about making meaning and not only making money. In this lecture, he clarifies the air around the concept of innovation with examples of companies from Apple to Microsoft and how they were able to become successful by making meaning. He then talks about how one must select their mission statement which is something not very lofty but meaningful, citing examples from Wendy's, FedEx and Nike. The third idea he propounds is how to jump your limitations. For this the organisations have to examine what benefits they provide and not what they do, ie they need to jump the curve. Great products have to be intelligent, complete, empowering and elegant. He further mentions about how to start with positioning and branding but adjust as per customers. Innovative product launches must not be afraid to polarize people as great products are either loved or hated. The next mantra is 'churn baby churn' ie innovation must involve updating of products. Innovators must find a niche where they are unique and valued. He lastly talks about how to perfect the pitch (10 slides, 20 mins, 30 points rule).

You are good at summarising the video but one point I differ. That’s the mantra tied to mission. I believe mantra is something like tactic of the business while mission is one that explain how you are trying to achieve your vision. Again mantra is not vision as well as somewhere he referee this close to vision of the company

Guy worked on Apple products so there is a natural link to Yaron Brook. (0:01:22) it starts with the desire to make meaning, as opposed to make money. (0:02:44) the second is to make a mantra (not lengthy mission statement or a slogan) (0:19:51) because you think rich and foamous parses to smart. But rich and famous parses to lucky, not smart, at least half the time.

My definition of innovation is: To combine technology
@vittbris44124 жыл бұрын
@@orion9k it would become a complementation then, not an innovation
@orion9k4 жыл бұрын
@@vittbris4412 Don't mix invention with innovation, that's not what innovation is. To innovate is to use a concept in new ways or to combine concepts, that is being innovative.
@vittbris44124 жыл бұрын
@@orion9k there are many different approaches to innovations. An "incremental innovation"(as you suggest in your first comment, or as I called it a complementation) would be the combination of existing technology on top of already existing technologic infrastructure (which has effects of locks-in and path dependency). Innovation in itself, as concept, should not be understood as only entwined with technology, thats shortcoming. Innovation, as concept, is "the jump"(as Guy describes in the video). Its the response to a problem(see climate change) or to a demand (see the ice factory example), or both (as all levels societal transformation in light of climate change challanges). Innovation is therefore social, economical, political, philosophical and also technological! And all together, hopefully :) This is a very short and poor explanation, but in my field, we have agreed to look at it this way, hope it is of any help.
@orion9k4 жыл бұрын

if you are doing a homework, read this: Why is innovation important, based from the Ted Talk by Guy Kawasaki, from my perspective. Innovation in my opinion is the act of solving problems and opening it to the public to help them deal with these problems more conveniently. Here are the two things that stood out from Kawasaki's speech First, he said that in order for one person to be innovative and be able to stand out in their business, they should be able to find their meaning. Doing business for the sake of earning money won't make you survive your business. Your goal should be to change the world. Lastly, we as innovators should not be afraid to jump the curve. If we think that what we are doing right now, solving these current problems, are enough then your venture would not suffice. We should be continuously evolving, and we should also keep on solving more and more problems throughout.

I find it ironic that the speaker, knowledgeable as he is, says that Apple wanted to democratize the computer however, had it not been for Linux and Windows 95 and the ability to assemble a computer with a Cyrix media GX processor, me and many of my friends would never have been able to afford a desktop computer of their own. This is quite true today, if one is buying a computer 1500 USD Apple MacBook Pro, they are not going to tinker with it. With a cheapo Dell you would be more inclined to do install different OSes, hook up stuff to it, take it out in the open. I did buy a Mac, later in life when I was gainfully employed. I loved it. Apple makes amazing computers, I also have an iPad mini 1st generation that works great even today ( December 2016 ). Apple makes great computers, though not for poor people and that is not their fault, just do not say they are democratizing anything.
