I’m a bit worried about the fan noise. Cuz I use a mic always when I’m composing. I work on an iMac now, it’s a fairly silent machine and I’ve had no problems. With this I’m worried about the fan noise picking up when I’m recording audio.

Hi Jon, thanks for the Logic test on this machine. I'm a long time composer, producer, programmer looking to upgrade from my trusty Mac Pro cheese grater. I'm hoping someone could do a demo with multiple instances of Kontakt orchestral libraries to see what the MacBook Pro 16" can handle. I'm checking out the iMac Pro, but don't like all in ones. Also looking at the new Mac Pro Desktop, but it would eat a lot into my overall budget for other gear purchases. The top of the line MacBook you have may do the trick for now. You've been a great help.

Sorry for the potentially sensitive question but I think lots of viewers might be interested in that, too. Just a year ago or so you had a small little studio and were "financially struggling". Now you have a huge studio, some 10,000$ monitor system, just bought a 5,000$ laptop etc. Apparently you are not DJ-ing much atm. How the hell do you make that much money with your tracks? We know how much spotify pays approximately. Would be great to get some insights into that. There is no shame if the money comes from somewhere else, I am just curious and would be surprised if it really comes from just making music. Thanks a lot, and totally fine if you don't want to answer this question :)

I already covered this in a video. It’s all made with what u see in the videos. KZbin a bit, Music, DJ school, Production school, Label, Studio renting, all my old ghost productions, royalties for all the songs I have written, sample packs, affiliated marketing and so on and the MacBook is financed and the speakers need to be tested first. Hope this makes sense. 😜👍

Social_Commenter I could be wrong but I believe Berlin’s low cost of living helps too. Compared to LA or NYC, imagine if it costs $2-5,000 or more LESS for rent, food, etc., every month. Of course then there is VAT, but NYC sales tax is almost 9% also. :) So just imagine even with $1,000 saved per month... especially if financing over 2-5 years... you could outfit a HUGE studio...

If you have a DAW that you're happy with and know inside out, it would be very stupid to give that up and try something else. The amount of time you'd spend learning the new software, getting to grips with it and figuring out how to do simple tasks that you'd not even think about before would be extremely frustrating. And a waste of time. Bottom line, just find a DAW that you like, and learn the hell out of it. All DAWs do the same things, just maybe differently. It's the person using the DAW that makes a difference, not the DAW.

I use Logic as my main DAW, and Bitwig as my sandbox/playground/theme-park "happy-place" DAW. Before I leave the studio to go home I use Bitwig 15-45 mins every day to create new synths, new soundscapes in 'THE GRID' et al. Logic is still my go-to since I know it in and out. It would be damn stupid to put myself in an uncomfortable position in a session and so forth. However, I do like to have fun, and I always want to learn something new. I´m curious of nature and I want to learn as much as possible, even though I might never actually need it. It is the fun in research, having an open mind and expanding basic knowledge that does it for me. Not because I have to, or because person X or Y is doing it. But because I can... You know; Yes, we can!

Hi Jon, one important thing you don't need to forget: that Logic needs to be optimized for the new hardware. There are a couple of comparisons videos between Windows and Macs, the Windows ones have twice the power of the Macs, however, the Macs are running much smoother and faster, due to the fact, that the software is way better optimized to the hardware inside, especially video-editing software. Music-software shouldn't be very different...so after an update, Logic could run even better than you shared here in the video ;) But as you said, the new Machines are just beasts for electronic music, more than you'll ever need!

I want to jam with him, live, come up with ideas together on our notebooks, through our own set of headphones simultaneously. Is this just a matter of getting his notebook's audio out, into my audio interface and having dedicated headphone outs, or is there an even easier way. Also.. How about if we jam on one notebook, while using two different midi usb keyboard controllers on different instrument tracks? Many thanks and keep up the awesome ! Vi An MUSIC

One thing to note is that a round trip of 7.9ms is not very good at all on a 32 buffer. A Presonus Quantum or RME UFX+ get under 7ms round trip at 128 buffer size. For a real 32 buffer size you should be looking at 2-3ms round trip latency. I'd be curious how the macbook pro would perform at 32 and 64 samples with real ultra low latency.

Thanks for reviewing a macbook for music, and ... Impressive setup. Too impressive for me! I have a more modest budget. Question: have opportunity to buy a 15” 2019 MBP with i9 and 16GB Ram. Currently have 13” i5 with 8GB. Sometimes stops playback when too many tracks and plugins. Would you say the 15” will alleviate that?

Have you experienced any audio pops/glitches? I have been reading on forums that people have been experiencing this with the new macbooks and also I don't know if the problem was ever resolved on the previous generations due to the t2 chip. This is the main reason I am holding off on getting the new macbook.

Help! I did similar test to yours. Settings like yours. And my macbook pro 16 ( 64 ram, radeon 5500 8g, 2 T, i9 2.3) starts popping on just one Logic 10.5 instrument. I set it to 44.1kHz. I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Top music producers from India use about 150+ tracks! I saw recently Salim Suleiman, India’s top music producers, use about 175 tracks for a song! And it wasn’t even a film score or song!

Interesting video. You mentioned people using a Mac book Pro on film scores really needing a desktop? Well most I know actually use a mag book pro as it goes. I would love to see a film score test with it... Sorry I disagree with you saying Apple should reimburse you for the last version. They are a business , they make computers - I never see them advertise them as ‘specifically for music production’. That is your decision. Sure Apple screwed up post 2015 models. Result, people complained or simply switched to PC. Apple did listen so tried to rectify things. The result is a Mac Pro desktop machine which can cost as much as a start-up home or a really flash sports car. Newly weds beware: is he really saving up for the new house or a new recording studio?/ I really like your wide screen monitor. What model is it please? Liked the video - keep ‘me coming.

How is latency on this laptop with plugins/filters enabled? That's the one thing that I can't get rid of when using a mixing plugin like Ozone 8. If I leave my plugins enabled on the mixer, the vocals and keystrokes (on midi) have bad latency. I'm on an Asus gaming laptop with a 9th gen i7-9750H, 16gb Ram, 1tb ssd, and run a focusrite audio driver. Someone told me getting something like an Apollo audio driver, would get rid of the latency, but I was wondering if Mac audio processing is different than Windows and in which ways. Compared to my Asus, it seemed to me like a borrow 13-inch MacBook Pro with a dual core i5, 8gb ram, and ssd storage was doing pretty well, but I wasn't able to test out how it handled Ozone and a lot of tracks and plugins playing. TIA!

if you connect headphones to this macbook, even with the max volume, do you have a low volume? that is, let me explain better, I had a 17 in 2011, and a few weeks ago I switched to 16, but if I have to compare the listening in headphones of the 17 and 16, there is no comparison, the volume with the 17 is much higher, is it a problem with my 16 or has something changed over the years with listening via headphone output? I await answers thanks

Do your fans spin up even when you're not driving an external display? All of these new macbooks drive the external display via the dedicated GPU (which is probably why fans spin up because the dedicated GPU is usually overkill in a laptop). I'd try the same test without the external monitor. My money is on the GPU. In relation to your fans spinning up I mean.

Hi Jon, Have the Fans been running loud on your 16" MacBook Pro ? When connecting to your external monitor? Have they been distracting , when working on music? Are there any particular settings in Logic that you have tried that might keep them from ramping up? THANKS! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

hi here, will it be a good buy for the macbook pro 13' 2019 with the minimum configuration (8 Gb RAM, i5 2.4), work in Ableton for 30-35 tracks, plus a couple of NI Kontakt, Diva, Omnisphere, Ozon plugins? Will 8 GB RAM work well?

I'm using cpulimit and set the CPU usage to about 90-100% for the DAW process in the terminal (e.g. cpulimit -p 357 -l 95). This is useful if you don't want the fan to start and are satisfied without the turbo boost (which causes the fan working loud). There are also apps to deactivate turbo boost.

Output delay of 3.8ms?? I got buffer size on 128 and output delay 3ms. Im running a MacBook Pro 2015 early 13" retina. I guess you forgot to change the project sample rate to 96khz, that would of been the real test for the machine.

I want to buy a new audio interface because Steinberg was unable to update the Mac OS Catalina driver for my UR22 for almost 3 months.. I just saw the Focusrite in your description but I also need midi input. Have you seen the new Motu M2 / M4? Did you maybe work with Motu hardware in the past? In my view the M2 could fit my setup very well..?

I don't have any experience with the virtual instruments you were using. Are there about as heavy on the cpu and ram as Omnisphere? Do you think the base model would have any problem with Omnisphere and keyscape?
