It’s the T2 chip. It controls the Audio. So you’re right. It’s hardware and they have been patching this T2 chip forever. Mine got fixed with the latest update so try another one. I have returned three. I won’t accept one until it’s perfect. I don’t want an experience like you had with your 15 inch. I made a video about what to check for when you buy a 16” laptop.

Some audio companies have managed to keep their drivers updated to patch the issues (like RME - long thread about this on their forum). But yep, it is sad that apple have screwed over a lot of audio professionals that have coughed up extra money for apple products for many years, for their OS reliability / stability with DAW work.

@@tredfxman AFAIK they have all have had T2 chips now for some time. The MBP for four or five years. These audio issues are 100% related to the T2 chips which I believe are to do with encryption but unfortunately, there is a bug that causes the audio problems. It is hardware related. Not something you'd expect in a premium product.

Try going into Audio MIDI setup, select Audio Devices, change your sample rate format from either 44,100 Hz to 48,000 Hz, or from 48,000 back down to 44,100. I had the same issue and it worked for me. My problem is that my MacBook Pro 16" does not recognize MIDI. I am using a MOTU MTP AV usb MIDI interface which has always worked great, but it is not working here. Suggestions please!

Apple seems to disappoint quite often my only apple product I ever bought a ipod nano has a completely garbage design. The Glas Brock about 2 weeks in. Software might be good but hardware is almost only designed to look appealing to the eye. Other people may have other opinions but I will never buy another apple product unless they change something big in their philosophy!

I don't think so. It depends what you are doing with PC. I'm a web developer and I have no other choice than Mac. Linux is 'fine' with need a lot of care. And I don't have a time for that. Windows is unusable for me, I need unix-based OS because of Docker, good Terminal experience, etc... That's the first reason. The second is: Find me notebook with that build quality what Apple does. With the same case build quality, with the same mic quality, with the same speaker quality, with the same OS integration quality. This computer is not overpriced for professionals who doesn't want to waste their time and wants computer which WORKS. But nobody is without issues. Okay, new MBP has issue with popping sound. But that is software issue that can be fixed and there is a planty of videos how to fix that popping sound (for example change sample rate on built-in output). And there's even 1 pros to Apple: They have their own hardware. When computer will be factured with an hardware issue, Apple have to make repair program because a lot of peeople will be complaining. For me, the high price is fine for me. MBP is earning that money for me. It's my every-day tool for my living. So I want computer with quality and no compromises.

i dont understand why people use the default audio output for macbooks in music production while in the DAW, those speakers/audio drivers are not meant for music production. Stop crying and use your audio interface and put on your headphones. If you want to hear your music: export it and play it through your speakers.

Hi, Jon! I was using Apple ekosystem for a long time and was completely an apple guy. BUT, because of my main work I had to switch to Win. I was preparing myself for a lot of frustration related with Win, but after a couple of weeks using it I’ve changed my mind. Over the last years this OS has been changed a lot. I’ve bought a laptop with 4K and it is great. You also have a lot of DAWs for Win, like Ableton, Cubase or Reaper. I think they are not worse then Logic at all. Generally using Win now is not frustrating. You could give yourself a try. Of course it’s only mine experiences so, you can write yours.) Good luck!

Get the imac instead, bigger screen. Much better priced! If your not producing music out of the studio, whats the reason for a laptop..? Its better to have a medium powerful 6 core imac, and the weakest 13 inch if u must have one for travel beside that, in my opinion.. But as always, youll get most bang for your buck on a PC. However if you wanna run Both OSX & Windows get an imac. (PC Hackintoshe's are to unstable & can be tricky to build/get right) 👍

I don't it's an issue with the T2 chip. I used to have the same issue at a studio I used to work at, as an audio engineer. It was a Mac Pro, the old cheese grater model. At times, when the clock source gets changed from optical to internal, I used to face this problem. It just has to do with the internal clock of the machine. Once, I switch back to the clock of my interface, it gets fixed. I guess,, there's a problem with the internal sound card in these new 16" MBP machines. I'm using the late 2019, 13" MBP as my daily driver, and I have no such issue, maybe it has nothing to do with the T2 chip. To check if it is the real issue, just connect your sound card but change thr clock source to internal and try playing the session. Much love brother :)

How is the trackpad and the friction? My first machine had that popping issue with the speakers so I returned it (the update did not fix it) and got a second one. But for some reason, the matte finish on the trackpad seems different. It seems to be less matte, less grainy and that has resulted in more friction on the fingers which is really annoying me. How is your experience with the finish? Does it seem to be perfect or do you experience friction? For me, the trackpad experience is absolutely not the best because of this.

I almost bought a 16 inch Macbook Pro, but I didn't because it still has the T2 chip (and other issues). Apple still has a lot they need to fix before they deserve our business again. If I have a choice, I only use software that is cross platform so I'm not stuck with Apple (or Windows) issues. Neither is perfect. My main computer is still my Macbook Pro, but my main _work_ computer (the one that pays the bills) is a Windows desktop. Apple is nice when it works, but not something I have ever been willing to trust exclusively with my livelihood. Put a Windows Desktop in the studio and start making the transition away from Apple only software and hardware. You will be glad you did in the long run, even though it sucks in the short run. Your business is too important to let it be held hostage by a proprietary computer platform made by a company that has lost touch with their customers.

Mine has the same problem after the update. It is not announced officially that Appel fixed it. I think they’re probably accepting your laptop for return because they’re fed up with you at the Apple store. I contacted Apple support, told me engineers are still working on the solution via software update.

How many failures does Apple need before failure is the new normal? All I hear is how these failures are “not Apple like.” I’ve heard that for four years.

I had a similar problem with my 15" and 16" Macbook Pro but in the beginning when I played audio. First it starts up extremely loud like a pop and then as if a limiter starts up and levels down immediately. On my first 15 inch Macbook Pro from 2017 the speaker broke down because of this. Apple had to replace the complete case.

I don’t understand, this doesn’t even hinder your workflow. You are just being picky. I can’t believe you would rather use a Mac that thermal throttles over a Mac that makes a sound when you pause audio. Also don’t you use your monitors most of the time anyway?

When you invest like 3k, it means u plan to keep this laptop at least for 3 years but lack of WiFi 6 makes MacBook Pro 16 to be outdated in a couple years down the road. The WiFi card is not upgradable either.

@@Jonsine ah yes that makes sense, thanks for letting me know. The main issue I have with this machine is the fan noise, I would happily take less noise even at the cost of power in non GPU applications (eg Audio production) An ability to underclock or run in "audio/silent mode" would be a good step. For the start/stop noise they really need to sort that out, probably by updating the T2 chip.
