People get hung up on the race track appeal, but look at the hang time in that boy's hocks! Beautiful smooth, short, elastic top line, with flat knees and animation up front all at once. He's a moving fool if ya ask me. And he's chromed up to boot! He could be trained in dressage, nice hunt seat equitation, and more I'm certain. Plus, the mark of a good stud is if he out sire's himself!! I know a few quarter horses (My neck of the woods) like Reminic, Impressive (which I own a granddaughter of) and Sir Colonel that always out produced themselves, and that's what brings the mares and money around. Plus, for instance, Reminic was nothin to look at, even homely, and made killer working horses that were beautiful on top of it!

I wonder if they started testing these horses? I worked a sale in the early 1990s, the standardbred sale, and I remember the yearlings were rippling with muscles. It was a common practice to inject them with steroids and give them more weight, incredible muscle mass for that age, and when the coat was shiny, they looked amazing. They look much older than they were. I would hope that they don't do that anymore. It's not that it hurts the horse, and the funny part is if every horse is going through the same thing, it's not really giving you an advantage, it is only making the playing field equal. But if none of them did it, it would be just as good, and people would be seeing what they are really getting. They must've change this by now but I don't know it's been a lot of years

Amen to that. Not all racing bred horses are face material. A friend of mine has a daughter of Red Light Green Light (quarter horse) that is way too tied in at the shoulders and couldn't hold her head high of she wanted to. Despite being slow, that thing can turn on a dime. She's 14 hands of good attitude, so a ten year old does playdays and showed Tiki, the mare, at the county fair the last couple years. Tiki is far from the winner's circle, but she's still a good horse.

@MsFlowP He actually was a failure on the racetrack. He raced three times, came in third once and fourth twice. He was plagued by injuries and never ran as well on the track as he did at the time of this sale. He is currently standing stud at Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala, FL. His stud fee is only $5,000. Despite the fact that he was a failed racehorse and is clearly not worth much as a sire - that fee is very low for a TB stallion - he will likely never be at risk of slaughter.

@gilliangirl1 I think you'd also be surprised to learn that standardbreds are very common in slaughterhouses - they are often sold to the Amish, who drop them off at kill auctions when they go lame or become ill. The AQHA is notoriously pro-slaughter as are many of its members, and as it is the breed registry with the largest number of registered horses per year by a large margin over the Jockey Club, I wonder how many of their culls wind up in slaughterhouses?

It isn't about the horses physic (it should be) buyers are more interested in there pedigree but sometimes it doesn't matter how good of a physic or pedigree it has what matters the most is if it wants to try as a racehorse, if it doesn't have any interest in racing well that's what can happen unfortunately.

Exactly, I ride a thoroughbred who has a beautiful pedigree, and was worth so much, but when they got him out on a race track he was crap. The pedigree doesn't mean they are good. The thoroughbred I ride, despite his pedigree, works as a school horse!
@TheQuietOne959 жыл бұрын
Thomas Milliken I've never understood the obsession people have with pedigree myself. I knew someone who used to to own racehorses, he has since passed on but he was always said that the horse's build was more important than the pedigree, as he put it '"papers don't make champions". He owned a few winners in his time, one of which was regarded as a dud pedigree wise, though was an amazing stayer that won most of it's starts and never came anything less than 3rd.

+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ I understand where your coming from but there are other ways to calm a highly strung nervous horse down and there is no need to write in capitals! We all have different methods to help horses cope with stress.

Yeah I agree with you. If anyone had that much money laying around, I wouldn't spend it on one horse. This horse was already going to a good stable before someone was betting that high. It's so dumb, but oh well.

Horse Racing is Animal Cruelty. Horse were not meant to run like that. I turned my back on this Abuse after I saw how many horses Were dying live on TV for the simple pleasure of gamblers and those with too much who do not use it to help they use it to hurt.

Linda Maria de la Rosa k sorry but horses... are meant to run like that lol, there's nothing unnatural to a horse about running. it's the most natural thing they do, and race horses LOVE to run, you can't hold them back. I've owned horses who can't be held back from galloping. I don't disagree that it's a cruel business and they do horrible things but saying horses weren't meant to run is absolutely ridiculous.

Rosie Froese I agree that horses are born to run but not to be exploited and used for money hungry humans entertainment . The racing industry is diligent of keeping their dirty little secrets hidden from the publics eyes and a large percentage of gulible or just plain ignorant people fall for their cover up but then their a people who are well informed of what corruption and animal cruelty that is hidden away from the publics eyes. The racing industry would lead people to believe that it is a prestigious industry who care deeply about the welfare of their horses , but in reality it's only real concern is it's revenue earning not the poor animals that give their lives to race and breed to keep their industry thriving . People see the lavish lifestyles of some of the horses and are misleaded into believing that all the Thoroughbreds horses that are bred for the racing industry live in that manner , but sadly more horses are sent off to the sale yards , feed lots or for private sales then the few lucky horses that actually live out their lives in luxury. I love watching horses in their finest hour running free not having an axe ( figuratively speaking ) held above their heads wether or not that they are fast enough to meet the requirements of becoming a profitable racing horse whose potential earnings far out weigh the actual horses life .

that horse's back was too long and he wasn't even pretty and yet he went for $16 million. people are stupid. go buy a real horse
@DoubleDogDare548 жыл бұрын
The story quietly going 'round after this sale is that it was all a publicity stunt cooked up for fun and headlines. That the "winner" of the auction had actually purchased the colt privately a day or two before he went through the ring. It was decided by a group to put the colt through the sale, get a phony bidding war going, running the price up to an astronomical level, the private purchaser then "winning" the in the end. It was never acknowledged publicly that is what happened but it makes more sense than paying 16 mil for a colt anyone with half an eyeball knows is not worth anywhere near that figure. If it was headlines they were after - and I'm sure it was - they got 'em. All these years later and people still talk about The Green Monkey and scratch their heads in puzzlement.

Highly doubt that story as the Bidding team that won was Demi O'Byrne on behalf of Coolmore and they underbidders were the Maktoum family , at this time i don't think both Parties were even talking to each other , as Darley Vs Coolmore was in full flow
