@@DanlowMusic I had a driveway alarm guarding some seedlings the bunny kept staring at and it went off. I threw open the door and hollered, "BUNNY! NOOOO!" and a deer nearly jumped over the trees. I think she hurt herself when she landed in some vines and small pines. I saw the deer again recently in a nearby field but she hasn`t been back in my yard. There are alarms that make noises and some that squirt water that may scare away the deer.

FUN FACT: In winter indoors 500 watts of LED lights = 500 watts of heat. So you can use some of your heating to produce food. I have a 15 watt directional Sansi bulb on a tomato plant outside under the edge of my steel camper roof. The plant dwarfs its unlighted companion that depends on sunlight only and is loaded with fruits but the companion just got its first blooms. Companion is in soil but the big one is in a 5 gallon bucket of nutrient solution. I have collards, chard, carrots, okra, southern peas, kale, radishes, cucumbers, purslane, ground cherries, melons, lettuce, mustard greens, peppers, strawberries, blackberries, asparagus and all sorts of things and experiments growing. I added a dozen more fruit trees this year.

I`m trying leeks for the first time and chives and planted store garlic and little red store potatoes to get seed potatoes to grow this fall. They made tiny red potatoes so they must be a strange mini potato. They say the store potatoes won`t produce much but if you plant the ones they do make you`ll get far better production. I got about 4 or 5 potatoes from each one from the store. Rutabagas are delicious and seem more "potato like" cooked than turnips but I grow both. My carrots are under my pole beans and cucumber trellis. I have to save space so I cram things together and just let the plants decide what to do. If they thrive I repeat the method. There are no neat rows in my chaos garden. It`s a jungle. I throw seeds everywhere and stick various seeds in any open spot I see and tiptoe through it all.

My nephew is extremely OCD and was horrified into open mouthed silence when he saw my garden. I`ve tried to get him to grow food but he refuses to listen to any advice because that might confirm that I`m not completely stupid and he needs someone stupid around to elevate himself to the sky. Both of them are control freaks too. They tried to bully me to stop me from getting emergency solar power for my camper with the 2020 payoff because they assume I`m too stupid to build a system. And again...there just can`t be anyone smarter than them around...and I`ve never seen anything like it. (See the show Green Acres...that`s them) But guess who has air conditioning when the power fails over and over here in Louisiana every summer? Ha! And guess who doesn`t? Rain is in the forecast for late tonight through early Sunday morning. When it breaks, I need to harvest snow peas. I picked my first peppers this morning. The pest presure has come early this year, so as soon as it stops raining, I need to spray with spinosad to prevent pickle worm damage. While spraying, I'll spray my fruit trees, squash, and melons with immunox. My elephant garelic is ready to harvest, the grocery store mystery garlic soon. Some of my potatoes are starting to die back, so I'll harvest it next week, then plant turnips and carrots in their space, or maybe... I'll plant more potatoes. I just harvested mustard a week ago, and it is already ready for a third reaping. Behind it is my Swiss Chard. I have enough shelling peas to add to my salad, and, or, save for seed. Voles devastaded my peas, and extra potatoes. Still no signs of new vole holes or vole damage since deploying the sonic stakes. I can confirm that at least one was eaten by Sneaky Pete. New Zealand Spinach is a great spring through fall spinach. I ate the last of mine last night, and am in the process of replanting more. It will survive a light frost, but not a freeze.

How come your zucchini and cukes are already so big? I'm also in MD zone 7 and just planted my seeds last weekend. I thought we had to wait for the last frost.

You dont have to wait till last frost date but frost does damage them. Yours will catch up quickly. Last frost date varies as you pick a date and hope for the best. Gary, are you afraid of jumping worms from buying transplants? I'm in Northern VT and we are just hearing of them. Thanks!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 ай бұрын
They have been around. I am not worried. The spotted lantern fly showed up last year here. There is always something. I havent heard them of being in transplants. Some people have said they showed up in garden soil that was trucked in. If they show up, I guess I'll have to learn how to manage them or keep the soil loaded with compost. That would terrible though. Thanks for your support and please visit.. I think I’m allergic to Swiss chard, perpetual spinach. They always itch my throat when I eat them. I’m growing a lot of peppers and winter squash this year.
