I don’t know about typing HP characters to be honest. Now - I love the HP series and I love it’s characters, and there is an element of realism to them - but it’s mostly surface level. I’ve tried to type these characters myself as a student of OPT and I found it really difficult. These characters are more fanciful than realistic. They are archetypes of a type of person we all feel like we know. Take Hagrid, for example. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? He does live alone and seems to appreciate that, but he also invites guests to his house every weekend and loves to go to bars. Or Harry - who does spend a lot of time in his head, yet doesn’t seem to be overly concerned about having deep thoughts, making connections, understanding relationships, exploring philosophy, or virtually anything you would expect from an intuitive type. Is he a sensor or an intuitive? He does do a lot of sensory things but he doesn’t seem to really do them by default. For example - when given the chance to pace and think or lay around in his bed thinking, he chooses that instead of doing actions. When you look at Hermoine the MBTI gets really tricky. She’s a thinker, quite obviously, but also very compassionate and socially skilled so it doesn’t seem like she has demon feeling. She’s appreciate of philosophical and abstract notions like the concept of slavery - but also enjoys the physical sensations of smelling and touching things, and she notices that quite readily. She’s very good with wand work so it stands to reason that she has good special relations and control of her body. She seems perfectly okay with chaotic situations - highly adaptable - does not seem like a Judger...but at the same time, she isn’t respectful of possibilities - especially abstract ones - as with the horcruxes. Most of the characters in the Harry Potter series are like this. They’re like contradictions. It makes them untypable. That being said - there’s a reason for that. The Game of Thrones was written from a pragmatic perspective - bringing the fantasy world into a realistic context. The Harry Potter series was written from a fanciful perspective - bringing the real world into a fantasy abstraction. For that reason, the Harry Potter characters were designed to be more like “categories” of people than examples of what a real human would be like. You have the nerd, the goofy guy, the quiet kid, the bad boy (Sirius) and so forth. Different characters - different level of realism. Impossible to type HP correctly.

Sandor: ISTP passionately hates what he does but he does it extremely well. Very emotionally aloof. And capable of adapting and surviving any environment. Sansa stark ISFJ: Very tradicionalist who wanted to believe in the traditional route of marrying a prince and living happy ever after that cost her deadly whom she learned her lesson in the end. Reason why she took all of joffrey abuses for so long is because these personalities are built to withstand pain. This is my personal opinion but I think Ramsey Bolton is a very unhealthy ENFJ who's only operating on his demon demon self ESTJ and becomes extremely cruel, harsh, and controlling.

@@choco1199 From what I've learned, the inferior function is the one you suppress (even though it matters to you) and so it manifests in a negative, insecure way. Kind of the person's existential crisis; unlike PoLR (7th) function which is the person's blindspot-they don't see and pay it any mind, and if you try to hit them with it they'd have a “you’re an idiot” and “I don't care for this get it away from me” moment. So a Te-dom would say “no it doesn't matter what I feel or what my opinion is, only facts matter” while they're secretly thinking “but who am I, someone help,” whereas someone with PoLR Fi (ESTP & ENTP) would be “personal values and opinions are pointless, I've got my identity in my logic” and not care at all. Instead, an Ne-dom would go “details and order and maintaining things doesn't matter, possibilities do” but secretly panic about “omg I can't settle can't have order can't fix the details can't finish anything someone help,” whereas someone with PoLR Si (ENTJ & ENFJ) would be “sensory details and maintenance are pointless, I'll work without taking care of my health and house and still have order in my ideas and vision” and not panic. So in the case of Ni-doms, they end up having issues with adaptability, being present and enjoying life, being in the spotlight, etc. I don't see any of that. In fact, TV Daenerys displays tert Se behaviour, oddly enough, or aux Se. Pretty indulgent in the pleasures of life from time to time, can be wilful and present and adapt to the atmosphere on the fly. Plus, she can't be an Ni-dom because she's highly judging. Perceivers (EP/IJ) observe and take in first and judge later, while she's rather quick to judge. Does that answer your question on my thoughts? If there are any issues, feel free to ask me to clarify.

You make a compelling case for LF as ENTP, though I still favor him as INTJ. I don't think that just because he likes to create chaos rather than bring order to chaos makes him any less likely INTJ. If like you say, he believes he has a competitive advantage over others in chaotic environments, then that's a very INTJ reason (strategic) for bringing about chaos. Furthermore, I think he shows far more Te than Ti. He's a planner, organizer, doer, not someone who relies on an internally derived logical mental framework. He is my favorite character. Any great video as always! keep it up.

And I don’t know if an INFJ would have such an enormous amount of energy to spend on people. He seemed to know everything and everyone. (Entp here) Littlefinger is weird. I think, with him, the difficulty of typing fictional caracters applies. His motivation and shadowy moves are more intj I think. And with entp Fe he should've known Sansa would turn on him. But you're right with the every battle, everyone is enemy, everyone is friend thing, making chaos and calculating with every scenario and reverse, is entp. But entp would do that because it's interesting, not to become "someone". It's more Fi. And I think his thinking is kind of directed into one goal, to be the ultimate backstage controller. So, might have Ni, Fi. I can see Te, Se, too
@UndisputedGH05T3 жыл бұрын
ENTP too, and I disagree. Every human has goals, which is very clear in the case of LF. I too have goals, but they are not too specific, Ne does describe goals for a person (it's like Ni but it wants EVERYTHING, usually that makes it less actionable as you have probably experienced. in my case I have a huge will to power, that's where a lot of 8w7 ENTPs come from, which likely comes from a development/ higher comfort/usage of the shadow INTJ), but they will be broader. If you look at LF all he did was for the idea of sitting on the iron throne, which is not a very specific goal, the road to action is full of hoops, an INTJ would plan for all those obstacles, they will mark the entire road. LF, however, seems more "reactive" rather than "active" and that is a difference between ENTPs and INTJs, he is all too willing to change his plans at any moment if a new opportunity arises, reactive in nature. I don't think an ENTP would just do things because they are interesting, that's only one of the many reasons for a decision. one other example is revenge as can be seen in both "satan" and "Loki" in Norse myths. (btw Loki in Norse myths is a fascinating character, he and Odin are oddly similar, I've had this idea that both can be seen as different variations of ENTP, though in the case of mythical gods one must be aware of their powers and not confuse it with cognition, a power of foresight for a god is not Ni, hence why I don't say Odin is xNTJ, he is VERY similar to Loki, and uses a lot of Ti and has a huge thirst for knowledge, both for power and for the sake of knowing. people may disagree on that and I may be wrong, but having read up a lot on Norse mythology, I think it's likely, they seem to be "aspects" of a singular thing, and they are blood brothers.) LF is likely an ENTP who is comfortable with his shadow INTJ, which usually happens as a result of hardships especially in childhood (as LF had in childhood) causing it to become developed.
@barbaraszentgyorgyi50073 жыл бұрын
@@UndisputedGH05T "Ne" is not goals, but possibilities. Sitting on the iron throne/ruling the seven kingdoms is very specific. A non-specific goal would be "wanting power". Also, an intj can't plan for all the hoops either, tries to, but Ni limits that. Reactive-active... he is both, that's right. Well, he's a fictional character, so his cognitive functions are messed up, not a pure type, for sure 🤷♀️. The Nordic thing you mentioned, is quite interesting 🤔. I'm 8w7, too 😃.
@UndisputedGH05T3 жыл бұрын
@@barbaraszentgyorgyi5007 The functions are not one-dimensional, both of these have aspects of possibilities and goals, Ne being external it will seem like possibilities more and vice versa, but that is not the entire story. they are both intuition with a different orientation, Ni is just more focused on one "most desirable/likely" possibility, Ne looks at all possibilities, which makes Ne broader and Ni more focused. That is the exact reason why Ni doms seem to be more willful, their goal is very singular and concrete, which also makes them prone to overcommitting, and inversely makes Ne doms more prone to indecision or even procrastinating as they may not be sure. To sit upon the iron throne is a very broad goal, it basically means "I want to rule all", that is not a linear road, that is one which can be approached in a multitude of ways, and naturally that road is unpredictable. A Ni dom will create the road upon which they should travel, Ne doms will start traveling and adapt to what they come across, taking opportunities as they come up. the INTJ shadow is an important part of the equation, LF seems to be exactly like an ENTP who is comfortable with his shadow, making him more determined and concrete, but also very fluid. Ne quite literally wants EVERYTHING, when I was a kid we had to write an essay on what we wanted to become, I wrote many many items so the teacher just wrote "you want to be too many things, choose one xD", I still want to know and learn everything, and be good at everything. C.S. Joseph has talked about this, idk which video, maybe the ones explaining the functions? regardless, my point is that Intuition includes both possibilities and desires, they just look different outwardly, but that look is not always the same, depends on a lot of variables like how one uses their shadow. Don't forget that we are excellent planners (owing to Ne+Ti), we just don't like to rely on it! Odinn and Loki are very interesting characters, they are both trickster gods, it's funny cuz I thought I related more to Loki, but the more I knew about Odinn the more I saw their resemblance and how I would be like Odinn if I was a god!

Some Intjs learn the hard way in life to be attentive to other people's perceptions of them anyway eventually.

I've heard you state this several times over the months and I kinda agree to some level. but I think typing fictional characters is far easier and more possible than real people. because most of the time people are so unhealthy to the extent that the functions are starting to blur and become impossible to pick out. I mean it's hard enough for people to understand or know themselves and it's even harder for us who just observe a little part of it. we usually don't get the chance to actually witness the whole picture but just tiny puzzle pieces here and there. this applies to even the closest ones, family members etc. but in fiction we almost always get to know their inner world. yes, it may be inconsistent within itself from time to time but we have all the "their pov" information we need.

Hannibal is INTJ and has the Se vs Ni struggle so hard that he even has a mind palace where he retreats to to avoid reality for example when he is incarcerated. Will is INTP and has the Ti vs Fe struggle, I guess he doesn't recognize other's emotions outside of when he is using the empathy disorder (why he gets constantly mistaken for an INFJ) so he spends the entire series failing to notice Hannibal is in love with him despite all he does. Also the approach to love both of them have perfectly suits. Hannibal always had this vision for Will and for the 2 of them and continuously kept doing long term plans about it. And Will handles being in love with him by almost obsessively trying to understand everything about him, not find out, understand it. Chef's kiss. You can imagine the rest. HELL YEAH NATHAN :D Edit: In regards with Arya, it's hard to say, but I think you do have a point with her being an ISFP. I say this based on what drives her to become a faceless man. Some of the most brutal people in society have been F type users.

Lovely video, I liked it when you said that it is not possible to type characters and the whole explanation about it. I really trust your insights, so please make a video about Amélie Poulain, to end the battle between the fans about her being an INFP or an INFJ (or even another one hahahah) Thank you!

Is there that much of a battle about this? I remember some KZbinr posted a video characterizing her as an INFJ (with much disagreement in the comments), but I think she's pretty widely regarded as an INFP. I certainly see her an INFP.

Thank you so much, Nathan! This was amazing. I really hope we see part 2, at least. Cersei, Daenerys and Ned can't remain untyped. (Even though we all know the ENFJ Ned there). By the way, Little Finger strikes me so much more as an INTJ. One with very mastered Se. Remember he didn't used to be so good at it, as he got himself in lots of trouble for his feelings for Cat, meaning he wasn't that aware of his surroundings. He can manage chaos but because it is the means to the end. More than improvising, I think he's seen that posible outcome and that's the reason he seems to swim so well in those waters. He's more of a controlling person rather than an improviser. He has everything perfectly measured, clock working. Can't imagine any other type planning that much ahead and so well like an INTJ.

quoted from personality database on little finger as an INTJ "One of the biggest problems in function theory is that people apply certain eminent characteristics to only one particular function. I read a lot of people saying that only good people in sports are Se users, intellectual analytical are Ti, rebels are Fi users, only TJs are in big organizations, only Fe are manipulators. These generic definitions are stupid. Do not look only for the ends, but for the means. Everyone can manipulate and lie. Look at the motivations (enneagram) and process (functions in judgment and perception) that attain a behavior. Little finger has a vision to take the Iron Throne because he see himself as the only who as apt to it. His feelings are selfish and concentrated in himself first than others. He's plays all things like chess and uses chaos only for his purpose and have no external idealism of tribe like Varys have. He's studies the social psychology to apply in logical way. If he can pass an attitude Fe is because he's 3w4, but in inside of his mind have an Te who want objective and apply all plans in cold and sequentially way."

I would argue infp for jon- and istj for aragorn.
@vig91623 жыл бұрын
He can't be INFJ. During his time at the Night's Watch Jon struggles to conform his values to Night's Watch values (mostly its neutrality). Also, there was a very important conversation (from mbti standpoint) in AGOT between Jon and Sam that provides a nice contrast between Jon's Se (Books are just books) to Sam's Ne (Books can contain lots of information that we can use in lots of ways).
@RevRideReason3 жыл бұрын
@@andytheindividual3862 ISFP/INFP for Jon for sure but Aragorn ISTJ ?... I don't think so. His imbalances seem more Ti/Fe than Si/Ne. INFJ is possible here but he's literally living in the moment with ease along with having and (sharing) reasons for everything he does whether it being right or wrong. I see why you would say ISTJ because he could come off as duty based at times but 6th slot Si is alot stronger than ppl think and that inferior Fe or Fe in general is definitely more apparent. Aragorn is a ISTP imo, now Boromir is a ISTJ
@andytheindividual38623 жыл бұрын
@@RevRideReason boromir istp to me. I only say that because of the way that aragorn goes around his entire life constantly collecting information- and being the most badass warrior to prove it as well. Also, the way that he trained as a ranger is very istj to me. This is why he remains stoic always.. people underestimate two things- the writers aren't writing perfect mbti personalities. They are writing Characters with lots of room for interpretation. Just like humans. Its about the way that these characters were raised imo, that gives them differences others wouldn't see who were looking for black and white mbti. Every character written might be using one function, that maybe isn't in their own stack, like a regular human being. But the way they use that specific function, could be telling to who they really are. Idk if this makes sense but it does to me :)
@RevRideReason3 жыл бұрын
@@andytheindividual3862 interesting... but everyone has a right to an opinion though so cool, but I'll be surprised if others outside of ISTJ's would agree about Aragorn (ISTJ and not P). interesting nonetheless. ISTP's like myself are almost the total opposite of Boromir but I respect your opinion. 🤔😉 btw try to make an argument against Boromir's child like Fi because that's a hard one to miss imo.

Please do the personailtiy type of Jordan Peterson. Many MBTI fans are confused why do people struggle typing him as either an INTP or INFJ and how do cognitive functions evolve. Because Jordan Peterson many people say has Ti, but how come to some people say his Ti evolved so much as an INFJ or if he had it from the start as an INTP.

Peter Baelish is definitely an INTJ. He's way too self motivated, and machiavellian to not be one. Chaos is only a means to an end for him

Idk, I feel the ENTP thing - not all of his decisions have an obvious short term goal in mind, though they're all potentially in service to his longer term goals. He's really good at speaking and has always been good at making alliances and friends. I think the chaos aspect kinda pushes him more in this direction, and psycho entp feels like a good fit

Not the same exact personality, just the same broad type, within which there is a great deal of variety. Could be the difference between someone who uses their Ne more for things like debating and humor vs. someone who uses it more for seeing many possibilities and opportunities they can take advantage of. I think Nathan's analysis makes sense, though the INTJ arguments also make sense in their own way...

I would make a case for Arya being an ESFP by the way she is portrayed before her traumatic experience. Maybe it has to do with the fact that is very young, but she seems quite in the moment and playful there. After Ned's death she loses her trust in people, gets isolated, what leadings to her Fi becoming more dominant for her acting
