Well, you can be a leader without being seen, as long as you don't mind giving someone else the credit and that person trusts your advice and has the skill to be visible. If you want to be given the accolades, however, then at least some part of you wants to be front and center. That's the whole point of what he was saying in the video.

I'm an INFP scientist and it's... interesting. When I interviewed for university, my interviewer (a rather eccentric professor) told me that the sciences generally needed people more people who were "outside-the-box" types, because they're the sorts of people that can often tie strange threads together between disparate parts of the field. And whilst the deeply analytical and methodical people are absolutely essential (I am hopeless at these things and really have to work at them and concentrate), there's a feeling that some scientists can get too blinkered and caught up in detail.

A little story from an INFP who didn't think of being an artist at first: I've actually been drawing since I was a kid but I don't know why I wanted to be a Scientist (Astronaut later on) back then😂😂 then during high school, wanted to be a fashion Designer... But took IT as my major in College because my parents thought I'm good with computers and I just went with it cause I got no other options I wanted. After graduating, worked in an office twice, resigned twice, both within just a year. Learned how to sew (found out I actually have skills since my grandma was a seamstress when she was younger) but it gave me too much stress so I stopped. Spent the next few years wondering wtf to do with my life... Then decided to come back to drawing, become an artist, a game illustrator to be specific. Now, I stay at home, take small art commissions for a start and I can't see myself doing anything else but create art because its my happiness. All these happened before I found out my type. I wonder if I knew sooner then I would've listened to my Fi and tell what's more important to me instead of trying to do any decent job just to earn money. Now, I regretted wasting all those years when I could've started drawing early and improve and doing something big with my life now... sigh
@pizzadohpaz3 жыл бұрын
Hi, fellow infp here. Reading this was a crazy experience. I had the same thing as you, but with writing instead of drawing. And accounting instead of IT. I'm now 8 months out of university, in a steady career working for an incredible company, and yet I feel so out of place unless I am writing. I discovered my type in the last year of university, and truly wished to change my major (but of course, that's ridiculous when you have just a semester to go). I did make the decision (against what my parents thought was best) to not go for a Master's degree. I can't tell you how much happier I became after that decision. Anyways, I'm stuck at this job because it really is a wonderful company, plus I am afforded time to actually work on my novel a bit. I can totally see myself writing full-time (or perhaps writing sometimes and editing as a freelancer for my "real" job). The thing is, I can't make myself take that plunge. So, would you have changed your life if you had known your type earlier? Maybe, but maybe not. I haven't. Be happy where you are, and do not dwell on what might have been. Look forward :)

Writing, the arts, and counseling/psychology are the fields where INFPs are overrepresented, and they are exactly the career fields that I have been most drawn to. Studied psychology but ended up in writing-based (including some psychology-related writing) freelance work. Considering adding illustration or design to my repertoire at some point to make use of my artistic skills. Also love philosophy and was encouraged by professors to pursue it further, but there's not much of a career path there aside from being a professor, and I can't stand talking or being the center of attention that much. I've also been drawn to the sciences and at one point envisioned a 'scientist by day, artist by night' life for myself. But I decided it made more sense to pursue areas of greater natural strength. One thing's for sure: I would never go back to a normal full-time job. I love the freedom and flexibility I have with freelance work.

INFJ here, and this was my response to a comment that I appreciated made by an INTJ, with regards to INFJs and philosophy: That's so funny that you mention this, as I was just pondering about this very thing. I'm a 24 (almost 25) year old INFJ, and while I do spend a majority of my time pondering and questioning and philosiphizing, I've found that most of my philosophizing is aimed towards expanding my vision of how everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, ties in together into one great whole, with a particular leaning towards the human condition and where/how the human family will end up. It is extremely future oriented, as if I just keep running down a single tunnel trying to find the end, stripping away more and more details along the way, and sometimes I feel that I do reach the end of the tunnel, which leaves me feeling both relieved and dissatisfied. This contrasts with INTPs, as one example, who seem to be much more adept at getting to the bottom of each and every individual little concept that may arise out of nowhere and then see how those concepts may correlate with a hundred other concepts. For me, as an INFJ, it's more like all concepts fit into one entire, far-reaching conceptualization of the universe. The fun part is when a concept doesn't quite fit into my grand vision, and then I take pleasure in looking at that concept from every single angle until eventually some time down the road it manages to slip into that tunnel of mine, or it causes the tunnel to lengthen even further indefinitely, and the exciting race to the end begins once again. (This is where Se comes into play. In order for my Ni, or my life, to remain meaningful, I have to continue engaging with the world so as to take in more data for my Ni to then deconstruct.) One thing I've noticed is that I tend to philosophize best when I'm around a high Ne user who also enjoys to philosophize. They tend to see my insights as wise and far-reaching and "spiritual", while I tend to see their insights as deliciously novel and entertaining and playful.

Definitely not the contemporary academic philosophy, which is dominated by very abstract thinkers like INTPs and has very little to do with... people, "giving advice" or "being sage-like". Philosophy departments attract disproportionately many 18-year old INFJs who have a misconception about what academic philosophy is. There's an occasional outstanding INFJ like Wittgenstein in modern philosophy and INFJs can excel at many different pursuits, but I wouldn't suggest this career as "ideal" for them. I'd go with priest/spiritual director, counselor/psychotherapist. 1 on 1 psychological insight and advice. Or simply, any other career that does not interfere with being a good friend and counselor in private life. But first they need, as you mentioned in the ENTJ segment, to grow up and mature, perhaps more than most other types to excel in this pursuit. - INTJ
@callumAS3 жыл бұрын
I think the capacity for xNFx's to excel in hard sciences is not often enough acknowledged. Young NT's who are initially attracted to these fields are often disillusioned when they realise their own ideas and thinking are routinely overshadowed by accepted academic standards and conventions. NF's tend to be more comfortable there because thinking is an aspirational function for them (rather than something they want to use with impunity) and the value of a specific area of science can be extremely resonant for them. xNFP's in particular do very well in hard-science because the scientific community is a very Te-friendly realm. Similarly, NT's often find themselves happiest in soft-sciences, philosophy, or working with emergent technology because they are more likely to find fresh ground to intellectualise and systematise in those fields.

Thanks for pointing that out! I'm an INFJ and I've always found that my Ne dominant friends are much more natural at philosophical discussions than I am. I like philosophy and I think studying it is very interesting, but I wouldn't call this profession ideal for an INFJ. Also, I don't know about other INFJs but I actually love doing a job that has an effect in the real world. With Se being my inferior function I may get exhausted after some time, but I have to know that my work helps other people (individuals or a group). Philosophy is fun for some time, but it being solely theoretical would frustrate me real quickly.

That's so funny that you mention this, as I was just pondering about this very thing.

As a 70 yo INFP looking back over my life, I see how most of your descriptions really fit what I have done. I loved theater and foreign languages but ended up as a biology major because I love knowing all the details about our natural world. I then went into high tech and it was fun for a while but I realized it did not have meaning for me. Stopped and had some kids which was really great, but after they were mostly grown, started a jewelry business based in natural local stones, did lots of shows and events, then ended up managing a state parks interpretive gift store. Out of all the different things I've done, I see that I most loved the parts where I could work alone, doing something creative, and hated the parts where I had to manage other people because I was terrible at that. I love being retired now and still love learning new arts.

intp one is true. for me, i absolutely despise the dissonance in engineering i see while studying (the problems with the already established rigid structures you mention). they claim they want us to be able to find solutions in real life scenarios, they claim they don't want us to blindly remember formulas and shit. yet they ask exactly that, to blindly remember formulas and facts, they only give abstract and purely theoretical garbage that's often far removed from reality, often with no real life application as the systems are obsolete (for example, how to find an unknown resistors' resistance ... normal people use a fucking multimeter and have their answer, but no, we have to calculate it with several known resistors with a method from the beginning of the 20th century ... absolute garbage, i tell ya, and that's not even taking the absolute shitshow that informatics and programming is into consideration). i'm glad i went through the rout of trade and then master of the trade in a field i love (tool and die making and precission mechanics), while also learning about another subject (history) jsut on the side. the rigid world of academia, where everyone thinks so highly of themselves for getting a shitty title is simply not for me. on the other hand i do absolutely love learning new things (for example in history and technical fields and even engineering (so long as it's not the shitty system of generalized schooling)), i like to search for applications of what i know while looking for ways to do things better (which is where the trades shine, for there is usually a need for a practical solution that you have to come up with, with different things to consider for different jobs it keeps your brain constantly working). to summarize: just 'cause you're an intp does not mean you have to go into academia. you might find a completely different thing you're absolutely great in, so try out whatever you can early and stick with what you like. noone cares about worthless titles except other blokes with just as worthless titles, you can reach just as much or even more without one (plus, in the usa, no wasted money for college or university) so long as you like or even love what you're doing and are willing to continue learning on your own (which can be quite challenging, i admit, but again, if you love the subject, you'll learn at least something by just listening to people or watching videos on the subject).

I do not know the exact the reason why ISFP and INFP get lumped together, but I do have an Idea. For me personally though, I have noticed that the ISFP analysis's and portrayals are usually the least accurate. If I were to separate the ISFP and INFP here, I would keep the INFP as the Artist, and I would instead say the ISFP is a Designer. Art and Design are very similar yet still very different.
