16 Personalities in a Power Outage

As with most things, some personality types will love it and others will hate it. Black-outs are one of those things. Some see it as an opportunity to employ ingenuity or creativity, to learn to be courageous, to bring people together, or to simply not go to work or school. But for others it is an unnecessary hindrance to their plans as they continue to attempt to control the world around them (Te and Fe).

About 25 years ago I woke up to a magnitude 4-5 rigter scale earthquake (I did not live near a major tectonic foldline) I went back to sleep after about 30 seconds. My parents and sister were freaking out LoL. There were not even objects that had fallen from the shelves. The morning after after 9 hours of sleep I concluded there was no damage to the house. Yup also INTP. Some say I lack fear in situations I am supposed to feel fear. I asses a situation and decide if an emotinal response is warrented or not.

I come from a large family (all with different MBTI types) and I can say these are spot on 😁 We grew up in an area with heavy snowfall, so power outages were a regular occurrence. So my parents would try to make it fun instead of scary. Whenever the power went out, after shutting extra windows/doors to conserve heat and setting out some drinking water, we'd play board games and eat candy that we had saved (like those big cans of Jelly Bellies.) It got to the point where if the power when out even for a couple minutes, we'd drop all of our chores and beg Mom and Dad to let us have a "Power Outage" day. Good times 😄

Haha! In my situation (rural area, multiple hour power outages happen about 6 times a year), it's INTP: *groan* I forgot to get gas for the generator! ENFP: oh, well, we can put the freezer stuff outside if it comes to that point. Kids (undetermined, but at least one extreme I and one extreme E): Yaaaaay! Can we do flashlight tag? ENFP: you know I have been saving tiny flashlights for this very moment! INTP: *on phone, trying to get information on how long the outage will last before his battery runs out, doing adulting stuff (and probably browsing Reddit) while ENFP runs around with the kids, tries to contain irritation about the noise and people stepping on his feet* ENFP: "isn't it nice with all these candles?" *Pokes candle, burns fingers with wax* "Children, this is why you should always be careful with fire." *Pokes candle again* Kid: Can I light a candle? INTP: let me show you the best way. *Detailed description* Kid does it. INTP: You should have done this and that in a different way. ENFP: but you lit it, Yay! INTP and ENFP: *more poking around at the candles* I really like power outages, they're fun.

INTP: First, I'd enthusiastically light the wicked storm lanterns that I only get out once every few years (for outages). 30 seconds later I'd be scrolling apathetically through my phone, bored af, and throwing longing glances at my electronic devices. I think you're great at these, the characterizations are usually spot on. I also love that you don't rely on green screens, and use practical effects instead! The only constructive criticism I can think of is to be more animated for the more chill/hippie/happy types, some come off sounding like nonplussed INTJ's.

I remember the last power outage I had with my family... My ESFP father got out to talk about that with the neighbors, and my ESFP sister was sleeping after school. I didn't wanted to go talk to others, so I just went to my room, lighted my lantern phone and keept reading my book. I've felt bad for not being so social as my parents and sister, but overcame it after realizing the effort I would need to make for trying being something that I'm not. ENFJ I do like short-term power outages. Friends who have electricity let me get water for our livestock, and since caring for our animals takes much more time, I’m not expected to do anything else. It feels organic and relaxed, and we do spend more time chatting with the neighbors.

INFP: play with flashlights and mirrors, try not to burn myself while lighting the candles, grab a sweater to feel all cozy (if winter), plot to eat the ice cream if it becomes necessary (for survival and so as to not waste ice cream), pontificate on the significance of light (literal or symbolic) in our lives, then look out the window and wonder if life would be better if we did this more often, but on purpose, then start wasting battery on my phone and/orlaptop because "surely the power will be back on soon and I wonder if I can still get youtube"
