Thank you for this video. I did a boat handling course quite a number of years ago and I think I was shown this one.

Naturally my preference is for a hitch like the canalman’s aka, boatman’s aka, lighterman’s etc hitch because that is what we teach. I have seen round turn and two half hitches freeze up or snag but I have never had a single problem with the canalman’s hitch. The RYA seem to agree.

i know this one as lighterman's hitch. bizarrely, i learned it from a model boat forum!

@@ynot6473 Not only does the hitch have different names it is also tied in slightly different ways. The one shown is the method in the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Handbook.

Brilliant Thankyou for this I have been using a clove hitch or rolling hitch and failing 🤪

The shore attachment isn’t the point of the video but your comment is well made. The other reason for doing a full round turn ashore is that it is less likely that some scallywag will lift it off the bollard.

Should always do a full turn to the point ashore as the way you are showing will chafe the rope

Round turn and two half hitches is all you need and a heck of a lot faster to tie

You won’t get that off in an emergency under strain - it has it’s uses but you need a canal or tug man’s hitch too

This is a Hitch not a knot ; the round turn and 2 half hitches can snag /tighten up ; this Hitch will not Also one only needs to make the Turns ontp a Post /Bollard for all the strain to be taken ok ; Not no need to be quick , at all

That's a LIGHTERMAN'S HITCH!
@willowwrentraining37364 жыл бұрын
You are right. The same hitch is called Lighterman's, Canalman's and Boatman's Hitch. It may have other names like so many other hitches and knots.

Should have taken 10 seconds to do that knott, not 2 minutes 😂
