In this vlog discover with me Abu Simbel near Aswan in Egypt
We will enter the 2 temples together
We will explore the streets of Aswan, its markets and its souks as well as more authentic neighborhoods without tourists
We will also go for a felucca ride on the Nile
The bus station to go to Abu Simbel is not next to the train station, it is at the bus station which is 50 minutes away on foot (5 minutes by car)
Its exact name is: Aswan bus station and long-distance microbuses
(it took me a long time to find it)
The ticket office is also not easy to find, it's a simple window on a wall with no signs, there's just a big stone in front of it.
I paid 100LE for a 4-hour journey which is excessively low, in comparison a taxi charges the same price for a journey of only 10 minutes
There is the minimum of comfort but there is air conditioning
Departure is at 8 a.m. with a 10-minute break at 10:30 a.m.
Don't forget your passport because there is a police check at the exit of the city
After crossing 4.5 hours of desert we finally arrive (30 minutes more than expected)
Once dropped off you still have to take a tuk-tuk for 3 minutes for 20LE (0.60€)
Entrance is 625LE (18€)
(note payment by credit card only like almost all other monuments in Egypt)
After walking for 5 minutes I discovered the first temple dug into the rock
You should know that the 2 temples here were commissioned by Ramses 2 more than 3500 years ago and they were not in this location originally, they were dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt here because they threatened to be flooded by the construction of the dam right next to it
The smaller of the 2 is that of his favorite wife: Nefertari
I specify "favorite" because he had 8 who gave him up to 200 children
The small entrance in the middle of these gigantic statues is impressive
Once inside, it’s as if we have just passed through the door of time, we are transported thousands of years back.
This first room is lined with colossal statues which seem to guard the place (hypostyle or pronaos room)
On both sides, behind the statues, 2 paths decorated with frescoes whose designs are dug into the rock
These aisles lead to other small rooms filled with drawings and hieroglyphics (side rooms)
A second room with drawn pillars (second hypostyle room) leads us to a sanctuary with statues and a chapel on each side
The second temple is built approximately on the same plan: a large room lined with immense statues (hypostyle room or pronaos) then we go directly to the sanctuary because there are no side rooms or chapels.
To leave it was impossible for me to take a bus because the last one is at 1 p.m.
So I took a microbus (white mini van) there were 12 of us inside, I paid 200LE (€6) for a 3.5 hour journey (from 4:40 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. with a 10 minute break at 6:15 p.m.)
Conclusion :
The 8 hour bus ride is tiring but it's definitely worth it
Visit to do as much as possible.
[Travel carried out only on foot and by public transport]
