This was a far from perfect paint job on this one but showing the process is what this video was all about. I had a lot of things go sideways on me but when you're working with unfamiliar materials and unideal conditions even the best painters can run into issues. Most would have not showed these mess ups because of criticism or hate you get but we've all been there if you paint long enough I could have cut and buffed only showing a perfect finish but it's how people truly learn by watching mistakes learning the fixes and picking up tips to help on the overall process you will be in for doing it. Thanks for watching everyone 😎👍

Great information! I’ve been messing around painting some vehicles with rustoleum and it’s great to see how others do it. One thing I do differently is use mineral spirits instead of acetone and a small amount of hardener. I feel like I get a more consistent and faster drying time and the fumes are much less harsh. I’d suggest giving it a try sometime and see what you think!
@BarryWeaver-pv6cz4 ай бұрын
I love creating my own custom colors too. I just mixed smoke gray and gloss black about 50/50 and it made a beautiful dark gray. And a little hardener makes a huge difference too.

Awesome video. I need to point out may help you and the audience. The humidity isn't as big of a factor in this case, but the temp. is, of course. The main reason for orange peel seems to be that you used a spot panel clear, instead of an overall clear. Spot panel clear is meant for small production jobs, and sets up quicker. It has a shorter open time, and will dry quicker. Just trying to help brother.

A couple days ago I tried my new HVLP with a 80% Rust-oleum black gloss & 20% acetone. I guess I put the coats on to quickly and after a couple days it progressively got worst as it tried to dry. I finally scraped as much paint off as I could. Of course I don't know much about painting, but I'm going to change my ratios and add a hardener so it might level out. I guess I'll keep trying until I can stop the the orange peel. Then I'll spray the clear coat with Pearl. In my old and almost used up brain, I still think that the orange peel has to be eliminated in order to produce a flat and leveled out clear coat. Your paint job came out great, I'm just lazy and don't want to have to buff it out - that is my latest dream to come true! Thank you for all your time and money that you put into your videos. It is very appreciated and congrats again for reaching 10K !!!!

Yeah I don't know if you painted when it was very hot and humid out but that will affect it too but definitely try 60% paint 40% acetone and let the Rustoleum lay out about 20 minutes between coats and on the last coat give it a good medium coat see what that does for you I appreciate you watching the channel let me know how it turns out

You got my attention. Have you done 2 colors? How long before you can tape off? Red pad or DA the dried color before clear with pearl?
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS5 ай бұрын
Yes I have if you're using the spray paint it dries pretty quick and you can sand on it in about 45 minutes to an hour thru a gun it can be up to as long as 24 hours however heat and humidity play a major factor especially when mixing oil-based Rustoleum with automotive clear coat and cure times vary depending on the clear coat you use. The clear coats I have used that best work with rustoleum if you're looking to quick turnaround time is speedokote and nason. It's more time consuming but I usually give it a day or two to dry before lightly sanding everything and taping it for a two-tone or effect or anything like that then you pretty much just repeat the process wet sand with 600 and apply your clear coat thanks for watching!!

Do you always intend to sand and buff that orange peel? I do like the type of shine of that clear. The last time I was involved in my dad's bodyshop, he was spraying Imron epoxy. A blue like that back in the 80s would have been $200 to 300 for just the coatings. Reds could easily run $400 to $500. Sothatz great to know that you can make a car look good for that kind of money.

If so, do you reduce it down like the paint or do you have a different recipe for it? Just curious about that. If you have done that, did you try sanding it down like a high build primer, and if so, how well did it sand? Again, very nice job on the Camaro. Love the color

Yes I've used the rusty metal primer on a previous video painting an F-250 if you want to check it out it I thin with acetone just the same as I do paint sands good through the gun I haven't really had any issues now the spray cans can be tricky sometimes they don't harden up very well it's a bit of trial and error and getting used to but ultimately there's really no substitute for decent automotive primer thanks for watching!
