My father was a professional commercial painting contractor. One day (many years ago) I was watching the guy at our wholesaler look up the paint we wanted on the microfiche (remember those?) and I saw the spec chart showing what components were in each type of paint. The paint types listed showed exterior metal/wood, then floor paint, then marine enamel, then equipment, then big surprise, AUTOMOBILE. Same paint! As the use of the paint changed, a few additives appeared. I told the guy I planned to paint my car sometime and asked how much the auto paint would cost. He said they weren't supposed to sell auto paint, but the paint we were buying was $20 a gallon and all I needed to add to make it auto paint was hardener and flow agent. He tossed me a couple small tin cans and said to put a couple cap fulls each per pint of paint. I painted dozens of cars since then with very good results. I never used clear coat, I just wet sanded and thoroughly polished the fully cured (not dried, cured!) paint, followed by multiple coats of quality wax. For a while I used a product called Luquid Glass that was almost like clear coat. My thinking is that the cars I paint were originally painted with oil based enamel so they should be restored using the same. It's just too bad the only oil based paint we can buy now is Tremclad /Rustoleum, but some hardware stores carry old stock of Urethane paint and it works really well. When they ask you what you are painting be sure to say "metal"...the VOC police won't allow them to sell products for painting cars.
@RustedRides3 ай бұрын
That's wild! So cheap and if it's generally the same stuff it is just criminal the amount of mark up! Love your approach to painting, and you are right, cars painted with oil based enamel should be just fine doing the same. @tonyunderwood96784 ай бұрын
@@strattuner My comment re: lacquer thinner was personal opinion and experience. I've had better results using acetone and/or an acetone/mineral spirits mix. Popular opinion/observation is that lacquer thinner can have adverse results when used to cut SOME oil based enamels. Checking closely with the manufacturer's specs helps. I'm not THAT familiar with Tremclad, most Rustoleum I've shot was the Rustoleum Professional oil based commercial stuff and it's not terribly fond of being cut with lacquer... besides, acetone and mineral spirits works quite well, acetone dries faster while mineral spirits is slower and can help lay down a smoother coat in my experience although it can take quite a while to dry hard enough to not leave a fingerprint. Your own mileage may vary.
