Such a cute and sweet dog! I can relate. Our dog is 170 pounds, and it took a while to teach him not to do things like that as he grew out of puppy stage. He isn't a Newfoundland, so we also have had to work hard to teach him to control his guardian instincts (as he isn't naturally so good-natured around strangers). He's made tons of progress.

The Newfoundland dog, a gentle giant for anybody who wanted to cuddle a bear. Their relatively calm personalities make them good pets for neurodivergent people.

Just like individual people are different, individual dogs are different. You can't say all newfoundlands have calm personalities. That's like saying all autistic people like trains. Let's stop it with these broad generalisations about dogs breeds and personalities. Is the one shown here calm? People need to realise dogs are individuals, you can't determine your dogs personality based on a kennel association standard script. You need to actually meet your dog or puppy (and puppies mother at least) before deciding. This is why people get into trouble like this. Personally, I don't recommend giant breeds for anyone, they're myriad of health issues leads to the potential for massively decreased lifespans. 8-10 years average for Newfoundlands - not good.

I had a Newfoundland and when they are a puppy, training is an absolute must because they are so big. Training is more difficult the bigger they get, so you have to be on it for the first 2 years. Consistency is crucial, you have to act before they take an idea in their head to jump all over a guest, run after a dog or pull you towards a cat. Distraction is also a great idea, toy distraction, awesome.

I have the most dramatic dog ever and she is the most stubborn dog ever that’s why she doesn’t not listen to me unless I have a treat. She is a blue heeler, but I can’t afford a dog trainer because they are too expensive.
