"When he was a puppy, it was okay." That's a clue, friends. Don't let your puppy get away with anything you don't want an adult dog to do. Ridgebacks are FANTASTIC dogs--I had a friend with one and he was magnificent and sweet. But they absolutely need discipline and training.

Absolutely! When I got my Boxer I knew she would be big when grown. So I started with a zero tolerance for jumping up on people. It didn’t require any unkindness, just steady training. I also raised, along with my parents a deaf Australian Shepherd. I was 13 when we found him . He was completely deaf, but he learned manners really easily.

@@lilolmecjwhat sort of training did you employ to reduce jumping on people
@lilolmecj
@lilolmecj 9 ай бұрын
@@Jasmine-se7bs turning my back and ignoring her every time. First I would gently take her paws and return them to the floor and say no. If she jumped again I would turn around and ignore her. She actually learned really fast. My daughter has a half Great Pyrenees/ Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd. She is huge, and it works in the moment but she has taken forever to extinguish it completely. But they do quickly understand they are not getting the positive feedback they seek. Remember that while trying to stop undesirable behavior to make sure to give lots of positive reinforcement when they do what you want. And the most important thing I ever learned about dogs, do five minutes of training every day. Not every training session has to involve food, giving scratches and words works too. My personal preference is a mix of treats and vigorous pets while maniacally saying love treats in my just for dogs voice.

@@lilolmecjI think they let her go with a lot of behavior because she has a disability. They didn't chastise her. They didn't make her feel bad about who she is as a dog. They worked with her disability to help her to understand. She didn't want to be a bad doggy. Everybody wants what they want. It's not wrong to want. It's wrong of the owner is not to have been clear with what is acceptable, and what is not.

I was raised around dogs, by a mom who could train a dog to literally do anything she required. She had two rules for dogs: 1) Never have a working dog for a pet. Thats not to say working breeds cant make good pets; it means they require TRAINING to be a PET. And 2) you are the boss, not the dog. If you dont establish control, the dog will. Training begins the day the pup comes home, not six months later when you have to bring a specialist in. My mom also had another saying: you can have a baby by accident, but you have to go get a dog. That meant you dont get a dog until you are ready to be responsible for one.

❤👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 point blank period! Everyone thinks because I have a sweet Mastiff it's like the dogs just come like that but no! If I didn't train my Corso we would have a dangerous dog on our hands and it wouldn't end up nice for either us or the dog in the end Everything that is undesirable is nibbed in the bud when it occurs this how I ended up with a sweet family dog not because the dog is naturally inclined to do that without any leadership

I had one when I was a little girl. I loved her! Sue brought me many good memories when I was 4, 5, & 6 years old. I wasn’t mean to her, I laid on her, played, I was taught not to pull or put my face in her face. My Daddy said he gave her to a lady he knew, but as I’ve grown older, I think she was probably bitten by a snake and died. I’m now 67, daddy’s soon to be 92, and he still sticks to his story. Funny how we always remember our first dogs.

Not to be argumentative but two yrs ago I learned from Dr Karen Becker DVM that spaying and neutering causes dangerous endocrine levels and cushions disease especially when done too early. Most vets happily alter them at 3 mo while Dr Becker now prefers not to alter them but if you MUST then suggests around 2 yrs of age.

Good point for sure. I guess it just struck me as unecessary because the dog didn't seem to be showing any signs he wanted to approach her more, in fact, you can kinda see the owners have to urge him to come over to her. His problems with lack of inhibition mean that the interaction might have caused more arousal. I just don't like how much this show is just creating more shock and awe instead of setting the dog up for success but, it's TV, and I'm still here watching it 😅

@katelynncheyanne2937 9 ай бұрын
I’ve never had a dog respond to giving timeouts, it doesn’t teach them anything because they don’t think like people do. If a dog finds joy in a bad behavior it’s going to keep doing that unless the owner makes it not enjoyable for the dog anymore or gives it something more enjoyable to redirect them. A dog isn’t going to sit in timeout and think about what it’s done, they aren’t kids.

@@katelynncheyanne2937At a certain point too it’s gonna be useless anyways, cuz like. A baby gate is meant to stop babies, toddlers and perhaps small children who would rely on their hands to let them out. What do you suppose a 38 kg dog that was meant to track and help hunt LIONS AND BEARS is gonna do to a baby gate 😂 If anything they’ll see it as part of the game. Unless you have a high tech security baby gate meant to block off small fully grown adults it won’t be any use

Um,😐 of course he would stop going for the food on the table and go to his owner. He couldn’t get to the food on the table & his owner was just giving him treats every time he went the other way. And also Deaf dogs aren’t disabled & shouldn’t be pitted for it. All dogs are born deaf & blind. With just the nose working. This is not new to them. Dogs work nose,eyes, then ears. But these & most people go ears, eyes, nose. Then they found out he was deaf and instead of treating him like a dog. They went eyes, nose. 😣 😩 Why do people treat dogs like people when they aren’t. Dogs have a different way of communicating to each other and us and it’s mostly silent.

AWFUL advice. I have grown up with both dogs and horses, and imho both of them react pretty similarily to training. (same with cats and donkeys lol). But I trained my Leonberger like I did with my horse, and she was a wonderfull dog. Dogs want to be good, and they want to be a part of the family. As a pet parent you just need patience and learning their style of communications. I never, had to get physical with that dog - and that was 65-70kg of dog, and a full head taller than me. The only time she needed to be held back or held down was at the vets, or if there was someone swimming nearby. As I didn't do water training with her due to my own stupidity, and so she was dangerous to swimmers. (imagine a huge dog, with claws half the size of your thumb, trying to "rescue" swimmers by climbing on top of them)

There is some truth, as an older petite woman I would probably not take on another Boxwe. I got my last one at 50 and she was a handful to train. And realistically at the end of her life I barely had enough strength to provide the assistance she needed. Doesn’t help we live in a two story house. I will be considering those things if I get another doggo.

Letting a puppy get away with bad behavior because it's a cute puppy is pure disaster in waiting. Establishing you are alpha and training and setting boundaries starts the day you bring the puppy home. Otherwise you get a mess like this dog. If you don't know how to train then do some research and learning before getting a dog. Training good behavior into a dog is a million times easier than training bad behavior out of a dog
