I have been told I will most likely be in a wheelchair within 10 years, due to osteoporosis in both my hips. So I am trying to get physically stronger as much as I can. also trying to prepare myself for any falls that might happen. Thank you for your video! 🥰

I just saw your video. As a single woman in my late 70s, I fall too many times. I usually have to crawl to a chair to help myself get up.. I'd like to spend more time outdoors without chairs. So I'm going to start immediately using your methods not only to get up, but also to strengthen the correct muscles. I started to smile as I watched your video because I could see these methods as a potential life saver. Thank you so very much!!

Well look again: when you fall you'll be shaking, hurt, confused. This is an ACCIDENT not a relaxing trip to the floor. If I was in a room I would crawl (not on tippy toes and fingertips gaaa) but to a corner then sit up against it and USE IT: but not until you've steadied yourself and sat for a few minutes. Turn around against and then use your toes, but don't stay there like that straight leg until you get up! YOU WILL FALL AGAIN. This woman is dumber than sack of nails.

I kept myself calm (this was SO important!) My laptop was close so I searched for how to get up when you fall. I got lucky! YOU came up!! I was able to turn myself around and get up on my own!!! Excellent! Especially thank you for the reminding me about the exercises at the end! Looking at two knee replacement surgeries and I defaulted already to using plank ( or I call it downward facing dog) to get up from the groundmore easily. People saying these aren't good for seniors are wrong. If they do strengthening exercises they will improve their balance and muscle tone at any age. Falling comes from lack of exercise. Have read so much about people doing moderate yoga even chair yoga to improve their flexibility so as not to fall. I know stiffness plays into that a lot. We can avoid it but it takes our effort at any age. My 95-year-old grandmother would have said do something! Keep moving!

Main thing for us older women is to have a trusted person to ring us every day at the same time. If there is no answer, then they have permission to enter. We could also reciprocate for the other person. I appreciate this doctor’s knowledge, but I could not do any of them because of O/A in knees, hips and ankles. Best wishes everyone!

@kayeruss7313Ай бұрын
I'm overweight and have two knees that I'm afraid to damage by kneeling. I haven't the strength I used to have in my shoulders/arms. One knee and one shoulder were dislocated at different times. I don't have O/A, so I don't know if this will help much. First of all, don't panic. If you aren't injured, it's just a matter of time and figuring out what you have that you can use, if you're phone isn't near (mine wasn't). Panic will just prevent you from calmly figuring out your options and how to counter anything that might get in your way. I fell in my living room one day and ended up using a very firm crib mattress folded in half, so that I could kneel on a resisting non-hard item in order to pull myself onto a low chair. The chair had open arms and a slanted lower part. I had thought to get rid of it, but it helped me out, so I'll keep it in case this happens again. My couch that I could allllllmost get on to had a console in my way on one side and a typical wide closed arm on the other with a too narrow seat to get enough of me in place for further adjusting upward. So frustrating! Would've been up in about 10 minutes instead of what seemed like an hour! I was incredibly blessed because I live alone aside from a dog. A couple of key points, tie-on non-slip soled shoes are more reliable on carpet (and probably on hard floors) when you have to push with your feet. Amazingly, the push back from the firm, folded little mattress, did not allow my weight to put much pressure on my knees. It basically helped me lean-stand enough to get some height for the rest of the motions needed. I was so afraid of tearing tendons which would be damaging when I was so blessed to not have sprained or broken anything in the fall. Obviously, you don't want to be on your knees for long; the chair I was able to crawl on to had open arms I could put my hands around, so I was able to get off my knees quickly and pull/slide up onto the chair seat. This was all because the precautions I had taken were not available to me that day. I have a phone, but it was in another room that I would've had to scoot to. I actually have a stackable set of steps one can scoot up but they were in an inaccessible place. I also have a motorized bathtub lifting chair which I used to get my mom off the floor, but you have to keep it charged, which it wasn't. If you can invest in one of those and keep it close to a couch or bed you can hang on to as it lifts you up and then transfer to more stable piece of furniture, O/A would probably not be a problem. And, it can help others to help you if you're able to call someone. They can get the lift and stabilize you even if they aren't in the best of condition for lifting people. I can tell you that I was overwhelmed with God's blessings that day! Aside from not being hurt for which I was so grateful, I have to admit I wasn't aware of having everything I needed until I had time to think it all through. Just go slow, whatever happens. Don't lose momentum, but it is a bit of a shock, so rest when necessary. I hope this gives some options to those of us without strong enough knees, etc. I also was reminded that I needed to vacuum more often. :)

So many times I've hurt my back trying to get my husband off the floor as he can't get to the stage of being on knees. The plank would be hopeless- no strength

That's what I am thinking; I am 75 and in fair condition for my age. Forget the plank thing; I couldn't do that when I was young and strong. However, it's good to realize one's weaknesses and then to work on trying to strengthen yourself in order to be able to get up when needed. The trouble with that is that our muscles, when made stronger, won't "hold a charge" for more than a few days so we'd have to do exercises every day, not to build muscle, but just to maybe maintain what we might have built. And there's no way to bend like she is demonstrating.

The methods. She discusses are elegant. Granted one must have adequate strength levels. Fortunately, we can all increase our strength. The ways are many and varied. And the ways to do it can be virtually pain free. Visualized resistance is one prime example. But an in-depth discussion of such methods ls beyond the scope of this missive.

we have helped an older friend (now in care home) to get up numerous times the only thing we could do was to help her get on her knees then crawl to a chair or sofa put her arms on it while we would help her to straighten up, no way she could have done this on her own, we then learn from the ambulance crew to roll a long towel place it behind her back going under her armpits and hold one side each and pull her up, first she had to bend her knees and put her feet flat against the floor. That worked every time like magic. Of all the older people I know around me in their eighties none of them could use your methods. Most older people who fall have loss of muscle mass and arthritis and as a result loss of balance many are also over weight or very frail, if they could build up their muscle they probably would stop falling down. I think your methods could work for people in their 70s who have an occasional fall. Thank you for sharing.

All four of your methods require using your knees. I cannot kneel at all because my knees are boney. They don’t support me. When I have fallen, thankfully in my kitchen, I “swim” across the laminate floor to the carpet. Grab my recliner and hoist myself up. I am a large woman, age 78, and these will not help people with weak or damaged knees. Please address this in your intro. The exs you show are good. They are what my physical therapist advises and I try to do them twice a day.

I found a bit of success by keeping knee cushions in every room in my house then able to get into knee position long enough to do these "get up moves". Also low stool or book pile help in a sitting push back and rise onto low stool and work your way up by pushing off from feet and arms, no knee pressure on replaced knees involved. Practice with another person present for safety.

I have so much trouble getting up off the floor because of health conditions that make it nearly impossible. 1) I have Duprytren's Contracture in both hands. 2) I have Carpal Tunnel in my right hand and wrist. 3) I have metal knee replacements in my knees. 4) I have Lumbar Spinal Stenosis in and also in sacariliac joints. 5) I have Osteoporosis. 6) I'm 72, with very weak muscle strength and I weigh 172 pounds. My last fall was in a parking lot. I literally couldn't get up and I had to crawl on my forearms and drag myself to my car. I unlocked the car door with my automatic key button and from that point I got on my metal knees (hurt like hell) and used the steering wheel to pull myself up into my car. No one stopped to help me. That was two months ago and I'm still suffering in pain. Any suggestions for future falls? I had another mishap getting out of the bathtub. I was stuck in there for over an hour. There are no safety grab bars installed in my apartment, except for the plastic ones I put in. Which by the way are not safe. I used one to pull me up and the suction cup caused me to fall backwards and I hit my head really hard. I live alone so I was stuck in there. I grabbed a bath rug and was able to get on my metal knees and back myself up to the edge if the tub and freed myself!😊 Thaks your your great ideas.

@BadgerDevil So, how do you get up if you fall and there is nobody around or any furniture?
@BadgerDevil5 ай бұрын
@DrAndreaFurlan I have a friend who lives in my building, just upstairs. We have a system in place, one of us will call the other by 11:00 am, if the person doesn't answer we wait 20 minutes and try again if no answer we go and see what the problem is. When she comes in she gets a stool that is very low to the floor and helps me to get on it. Then, with her help, we get me back on my feet. When she is not available, I can sometimes get my self on the low stool, then slowly push the stool across the floor (I have rugs) to my recliner, where I can sometimes pull my self into it. If none of that works I call an ambulance for assistance.

I'm 86 years old woman. I'm arthritic. I use a walker with wheels since I can't walk more than maybe 20 feet. I've had two knee replacements and can't bend either knee to 90 degrees. I also have a very bad left shoulder joint from having tumors removed, which also removed most of my shoulder and triceps muscles from that arm. I'm also very overweight. So I can't do any of your methods. I can't get my butt more than two inches off the floor. What I have done is slide myself to a stair case and sit with my back to it, brace my feet, put my hands on the lowest step and push myself up that far. Then I push up onto the next step and from there I can stand up. Any kind of stationary low platform would do. Or something like a low coffee table next to a chair or sofa.

I'm not quite 86, but I can sure relate to your ailments. I don't have a walker. None of her methods would have helped me. 2 weeks ago, I fell getting into bed. It took me 3 hours to get up. Every time I got my second leg close to up, I had a back spasm that threw me back on the floor. I was covered in bruises. My knee surgeries worked very well, but I can't put any weight on them. I tried opening the drawers on my dresser to see if they'd support my weight and help me get up without using my knees. But the back spasms threw me back on the floor again. I've purchased a rail for my bed that I use for in and out every time now. A walker by my bed may have helped, I don't think so, though. I'm still having a difficult time recovering from my shoulder surgery! I scooted myself similar to you, but into the bathroom. I sat on the little ledge on the shower floor and tried to use 2 of the safety bars. I couldn't get that to work. Finally, one bar and the toilet for the bad shoulder got me up to standing. I looked at the bathroom clock, and it was exactly 3 hours since I had tried to go to bed. I think I may have fallen asleep once or twice from exhaustion!

The fith method is; go to both knees and if you cannot get up, crawl to the nearest door knob and make sure the door is closed and grap it to help you get to one of your knees and it will be easier to get up.

My family member always try to lift me up with 1 hand where it don't work cause by lifting 1 side will only hurt my left or right side or the lifted side. So I normally request for a stool and a chair. Where I will sit on the stool first then move to the higher chair where I will be able to stand up then.

I have the same issue, excruciating pain if I am on my knees, What I did when I fell once was worked my way to a couch, leaned back against it, put my arms on the seat and walked my self up until I could sit on it. The same thing might work if you can walk your way up a wall until you are standing.

About 3 years ago I fell in my living room and it took me more than 30 minutes to succeed in getting up . I stayed on my back asking myself how to proceed . The solution for me was to roll on the floor until I reached the side of the'sofa , then I did the dog position and finally I grasped the sofa to get up . I'm 76 and I'm totally unable to get up if my hands are on the floor because of very weak wrists

You need to practice how to make use of these examples just in case you are alone with nothing to cling to or nobody around to help you. The doctor is only suggesting how to use your brain to recover to help yourself survive when alone. Survival is the key!😅😅😅😊😊😊Great job! Portland, Oregon

The medical doctor is pushing physical therapy which is great. This should be done in a facility with licensed physical therapists. I'm a person that has osteoarthritis in my neck, both knees, both feet, and lower back. Not everyone can manage to get up from a fall safely whether at home alone or out and about.

I have reservations if senior can really do these methods which requires having to lie down on your tummy because most seniors have a little bit big bellies (in fact some have big ones) and therefore it won't be physically be practical to do all these. Probabaly you could consider first deep breathing and relaxing first, then try to crawl into lying on your side then slowly push yourself up up to the sitted position with both hands. After this take a breather again then slowly crawl yourself to the kneeling crawling position like a baby until you slowly transform into a pooping position. Finally if you can stand up with both knees better. But if not, use your both hand to push yourself up by pushing against the stronger knees in a bended posture and then slowly rise into a standing position. Just my humble opinion based on my experience in rising up after a lying position exercise on the floor. Now if no avail, the best option is simply to lie on one side and slowly push yourself on a sitting position , relax and shout for help. In this way your lungs and heart with be at a better position. Hope this helps. But that said, my appreciation doc for your post of course.

Thank you Dr. Furlan. My question is when a person falls, usually there is injury. I have fallen 4 times in the last 10 yrs (thank my dogs and my clumsiness) Seeing stars and experiencing horrible pain, I could not bend one or both legs. How do you get up then? One time i crawled to a soft bench and somehow managed to pull myself up and another time with legs remaining straight I sat on my bum and scooted to the house and stairs and there I sat on the hard floor for hours until I could scoot to my cell phone. Now I always wear my cell phone in a fanny pack.
