OG base M1 Mini owner here: While I have no issues performance-wise with my now 4 year old M1 Mini, I ordered the base M4 within an hour of the announcement. Fortunately, Apple offers US buyers a 10% Military Veterans discount. I could defray that cost even further by selling my mint condition M1 for 200-250 USD (easily) on the re-sale market. However, I'll "convert" it into a feature-packed Video/Audio streamer on the family room TV. Accompanying it will be my ol' iPad Air 3 serving as a remote and keyboard/trackpad combo using Universal Control. It's remarkable how easy it is to re-purpose these "older" Apple devices, extending their useful lives and a real testimony to the value of Apple products in general.

It’s such a scam in their favour, I mean they are generous with their watch having 64gb, a watch has a quarter the storage of their laptops, but there is no options for other sizes. Only 256gb minimum for a laptop (same as their flagship phone for the past two years and Samsung’s flagship phone for many years),knowing people will pay for more. I think for myself included go for the base because it’s already expensive and knowing eventually not having enough space to work with, maybe it’s me being cheap and stubborn. They have many drive size options and those same people that go for more will go for more. At the level Apple buys storage at I’m guessing it’s about $2-$5 for them to increase to 512gb and the same people will still increase the storage and the same people will try and work with the minimum specs. 1TB seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to pricing right now but that’s a long time from now. I would guess it would be $10-15 for them to increase to 1TB from 256gb and it’s not even that it’s calculated or unfair especially since the memory is soldered, it’s just insulting, insulting our intelligence and leading to an eventual bad experience once that space gets low.

I'll be upgrading both of my M2 mac minis to these new M4 variants. By trading them in and spending around 400 extra I go from 8GB to 16GB and from 16GB to 24GB of memory. And go 2 generations newer in chips. Sounds like a steal to me tbh.

I’m glad @Constant Geekery is still outputting 2160p , everyone else seems to have reverted back to 1080p… am I missing something? Is KZbin now downgrading or are content creators filming in 2160p and squeezing down to 1080p? It seems the time saving would be negligible between rendering then downscaling to save time on an upload ? Maybe some techie could explain this This is the ONLY channel I’ve checked that has output at 4k so far since I’ve noticed 🤫

I bought a £200 2 Tb SATA SSD for my old PC two years ago. I bought a faster £200 4Tb PCIe SSD this year for my new PC. This shows that something very close to Moore's law still applies to the pricing of flash memory chips. Apple have been able to double RAM in base level Macs with no cut in profits due to Moore's law. Now Apple should also double the flash memory in base level Macs because this would also cost them nothing

If you go way back to 2015, Intel released an i7 NUC that had 2 USB ports and a headphone/speaker plug on the front, 2 more USB ports, Displayport , mini HDMI and ethernet port on the back. The power button was on the top front left corner and the unit was the same height but a tiny bit smaller in length and width. Just a coincidence. I bought one of the M4 Mac Minis on the day it was released and am very happy with it.

That intro is the best take on youtube on the M4 announcements. I'm battling a cold and it had me coughing my lungs out while trying to laugh. 😂 The combination of the massive performance jump with M4 and the price drop for RAM capacity makes this generation as interesting as the M1 generation. I'm definitely going to replace my 2019 5K iMac with an M4 mini or MBP (probably the latter). But surprisingly I'm even reconsidering my M1 air and mini, which is impressive on apple's part because those are still absolute killer machines.

But that mini sure does look attractive, I will be getting the base model for replacing all my raspberry pi servers that I use to host multiple apps from home. But I do see a future where eventually I will transition to a mini pro at home on the desk and a cheap air for travel. That's of course when my M1 Max gives up, it shows no signs of that unfortunately, lol.

Each generation there’s a new puzzle, with different binned chips (GPU vs CPU) and e- and p-core balance. Also, the base level 14” macbook pro MAX is a hefty 500 thingies more expensive than when I bought the M1MAX one in 2021. The full M4PRO would now be my price/performance/use-case optimum, and I like the mini form factor…

That entry level Mac Mini is an interesting move. IMO Apple has needed an entry level, affordable system to get more users into the ecosystem - and it seems actually very good value for money. It's getting close to video game console money, which I think could subtly give an increased market share to Mac OS if they keep pushing this
@Archivist42

@@adaml.5355 Definitely. We tend not to see many games for Mac because the market share isn't strong enough to warrant developing for Mac OS, but by bringing more users in that increases the incentive. So even if you buy higher end Macs, you may benefit from cheaper models at the low end

The bad thing is that idiots will feel vindicated, as if they were right all along. But the M4 is now more powerful than the M1 Pro/M2 Pro were, which always came with 16 GB. The M1/M2/M3 are still slower with a smaller memory bandwidth. They’ll never be able to utilize memory in the same way the M4 Mini is capable. All the people who foolishly tried to "future-proof" their purchase with upgrading memory, just wasted money that could’ve been used for buying an entire new Mac (including more memory) now.

I've been pondering the same question. At $600 the entry model is a huge amount of performance for the money... if you can live with the paltry internal storage. Even if you're planning to use cheaper external storage, you need to have enough space for your apps and a bit of headroom. So, I'd probably opt for 512GB of storage. It's a rip off to only get 256 extra for 33% more, but it will be a far more usable machine.

I can't believe my "new" M2 Macbook Air is already 2 years old and the then cutting edge technology in it is only half as powerful than the new M4 models just coming out. Apple trade in value is only 1/3 of the purchase price (I thought Apple had high resale value, what happened?), so altogether I am feeling very outdated and sad. Yet my M2 Macbook Air (with the $200 16GB RAM upgrade I paid) works just as fast as the day I got it. Would I love to upgrade to the new M4? Of course, but I probably would not be able to tell the difference after upgrading. There is nothing that my current M2 Air is doing sluggishly, making me tap my fingers waiting for something to finish, or unable to run because it is too old. Since my devaluing M2 Air will remind me it is slower only during benchmark testings, I think I am OK staying put. I am so tempted to max out the specs and get the most powerful M4 just to have it, but in 2 years I will probably post the exact same as today and realize that I have not used any of the extra power I purchased. I am so glad that professionals who actually need and use all that power will have access to it starting next week, but me, I have no pro work or pro needs. And these are not the old Intel Mac days. My current M2 Air is still a no-compromise work horse that hasn't slowed down a bit, and for that I am so glad and happy.

I am using a base M2 MB AIr 15-inch and will not upgrade as it mixes with the best for my workload. Though, no doubt, the M4 will feel snappier, have better battery life and perform like a giant in heavy tasks, none of these matter too much to me.
@accesswireless189

@@andyH_England Exactly. But the inner child in me really wants the M4. I felt like that when the last Intel 16" Macbook Pro came out fixing many of the user complaints, but I waited because I knew the M1 was around the corner. Again felt like giving into upgrading when the shinny M1 came out, but I told myself "1st gen products can have problems, better wait for the 2nd gen." Then the M2 came out when I went back to school, so I got the education discount and finally got it, after denying myself for 3 years. Best purchase! I could not afford to upgrade the SSD, but managed to upgrade the RAM to 16GB. 256GB SSD is workable with my external 2TB M.2 Thunderbolt SSD enclosure, but I cannot install AAA games because 256GB is too small and it won't install in the external SSD. I have a PC for gaming, so this is a minor inconvenience. My M2 Air remains for work only. So again I feel the urge to get the M4, but I think I can wait until the M2 Air is unable to do something or performance cannot keep up with my work. I think there are many people like us - rational consumers.

The M4 SoCs are impressive. I plan to replace my M2 MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro Mac Mini. I need more cores and RAM for running VMs and the stronger GPU is also good for gaming. The lack of touch display and intrinsic stylus support means I have little use for MacBooks these days, and my new Windows 11 tablet with AMD 8840U processor perfectly meets all my mobile computing needs (I will skip an X Elite generation before going down the Windows 11 arm64 route, hoping for a stronger GPU in the second gen SoCs. I don't understand why Qualcomm currently puts stronger GPUs in their smartphone SoCs than their PC SoCs). A large screen iPad Pro will never be a laptop replacement due to iPad OS limitations, so I am also replacing both my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro 2TB and my iPad Mini 6th gen with an M4 iPad Pro 11-inch and settle for it never being much more than a media consumption device with exceptional though wasted performance!

What is a binned chip?
@garanceadrosehn9691
@garanceadrosehn9691 2 ай бұрын
A chip is made with some given number of CPU and GPU cores. Let's say it's 10 CPU cores. There can be chips where the vast majority of the chip is perfectly fine, but maybe there's one of those 10 CPU cores which isn't working quite right. Apple "turns off" two of the cores so they can never be referenced by the computer. This is a "binned chip". This allows Apple to use a chip which they'd otherwise have to throw away. So they turn off any of the bad CPU and GPU cores, and sell the chip at a reduced price. Really it makes a lot of sense for both Apple and the customer who doesn't need all that many CPU (or GPU) cores.

@ConstantGeekery 2 ай бұрын
👆🏻great explanation
@accesswireless189
@accesswireless189 2 ай бұрын
Binned chips are regular chips that have defects during manufacturing. Instead of throwing them out, they disable the defective part and sell it as less powerful chip, a binned chip. For example, Apple makes M4 chips with 10 core CPU and 10 Core GPU. Those that have no defects are put in computers sold as with 10 core CPU and 10 core GPU M4 Macs. Those with some defect they disable the cores that have defects and Apple put them in entry level Macs with 8 Core CPU and 8 Core GPU M4 macs. I used to think that they separately made 10 core version chips and 8 core version chips. Instead, they try to make all 10 core chips, and then they disable the defective cores to sell as 8 core chips. I wonder what if they have a chip with perfect 10 CPU cores but 9 good GPU cores, do they disable 2 good CPU cores and 1 good and 1 defective GPU cores to make it into a 8 CPU/8 GPU cores chip? It feels like a crime to deactivate 3 good cores just so that they can market the 2 tiers of chips. Is there a way to activate the good cores that have been deactivated? It feels like such a waste. Also, how does CPU Lottery play into this? You know how you get 2 exact same model CPU, but depending on your luck, one is actually faster or more over-clockable? or you have 2 of the same spec Macs but they never benchmarks the same. Is it that 1 CPU is faster than the other, or is it that even just 1 same CPU will always benchmark differently every time?

I see not all monitors are 4 or 5 k and some are even 1400..... (including the popular preferred ProArt). I see monitors that can power devices, use USB C and HDMI etc. HELP! Im confused. What do I use to get the best performance out of a monitor when using a MAc Mini? Heard some reports of monitor incompatibility with the latest MacOS and blurred test. If you want a 5K display, Apple offers the Studio Display, but it's not cheap. 5K is actually 78% more resolution than 4K, which explains some of the hefty price. If you are happy with 4K, I like Dell UltraSharp displays - good colour accuracy, quality and adjustability. Ideal for creative work. The USB C models can be plugged into one of the Mini's Thunderbolt ports, but they also have HDMI. If you also have a laptop, the USB C gives a one cable solution that will also charge your laptop. Considerably cheaper than Apple's display, and more versatile.

How much worse is the 12MP webcam on the M4 Macs compared to the 1080p webcam on previous Macs? It seems counterintuitive, but the 12MP center stage camera apparently is worse than the 1080p web cam of the previous Macs because of the center stage processing, meaning that the 12MP takes picture of the entire room and then digitally crops the person to keep him/her in the center. So only a portion of the 12MP camera is used on the centered person, and the actual total pixels used to show the person in the center is less pixels than the previous 1080p camera. In other words, the image created is a digitally zoomed and cropped picture with less than 1080p pixels, so the image is more blurry and noisy. It is not like the entire 12MP of the camera is all used on the image centered, the 12MP sensor is used to take a picture of the entire room, and since the camera does not physically move to center the person but just digitally crops the 12MP image to show the centered person, maybe only 2MP is used on the image of the person centered. The picture quality is even worse when you have your picture centered and the picture of your desk is also shown at the same time, since the 12MP camera has to be divided between cropping you and also cropping the desk picture.

I'm absolutely going to buy a M4 Pro Mac Mini. I'm just waiting until after Nov 1st so the payments will start with next month's bill. 🙂 I suspect it's still worth it to upgrade SSD storage to at least 512-GB, under the assumption that the performance of 512-GB SSD will be better than 256-GB SSD (as has happened on some previous Mac models). That's just a guess on my part though, I haven't seen any benchmarks to back this up. I'm glad to see the minimum memory on the MB Air go to 16-GB. I rarely have the need to use a laptop, but an MB air is certainly much more attractive at 16-GB than 8-GB. But I'm still in no hurry to get a newer laptop. So the Mac Mini base model is £/$600 of which £/$200 is the first 8GB RAM, £/$200 is the second 8GB RAM and £/$200 is the first 256GB SSD? The processor, power supply and case cost nothing! Proof positive that Apple could afford to be a lot less gougy on the RAM and SSD upgrades!

It's still funny to hear people talk about how bad 8GB of RAM was on the base models. I've been using a base M2 Air since launch day and it works totally fine. I even use it for graphic creation in Photoshop and audio editing on a weekly basis. Not to mention all the normal daily computer stuff. Those machines are great for the vast majority of users. If you do have a heavier workflow, by all means, get a machine with specs to meet your needs. But 90%+ people would have no problem with 8 GB of RAM.

Yes, it is fine for people who only need 8GB, but never let the truth get in the way of flexing on Apple! No one has to buy the 8GB model. The interesting conclusion from this is that Apple has managed to add 16GB and keep the same price, whereas Windows machines have all risen in price because of the extra spec. Though Apple has never been cheap, nuances like this are noticed and addressed by creators and viewers. An example is the Surface Laptop 7, which starts at 16GB but is the same price as the Surface Laptop 6 with 16GB, not the cheaper price of the SL6 with 8GB.

Yes, they finally offer intelligence but is it intelligent? We shall find out soon enough. I doubt it's anything head and shoulder above what is out there already. But I appreciate I did not have to endure their usual over the top marketing speech and just get the info in less than 15 seconds.

Apple may be using its intelligence, which it should have been using all along as far as ram goes instead of its greed MO, they now need to use Apple intelligence when it comes to storage, the Apple greed model is still intact here, for instance if you spec out one of the recently launched models with 8tb storage, it will cost $2.5k just for the storage. You can buy 8tb storage separately for about $450. The gouging never stops with Apple, but this shows a whole new ridiculous, outrageous, and despicable low for Apple. It’s ok to make a profit but over 5x the profit on storage is certainly a new low. Maybe the DOJ can add this to their investigation of Apple and its practices, if the DOJ can’t get it done, the EU might be able to, they’ve been holding Apple’s feet to the fire and forcing them to make some changes. Apple needs to stop the insanity and come back down to earth instead of staying in the stratosphere

Isn't it funny that Apple is the first company to throw out USB type A but is putting 16GB of RAM in their computers 10 years too late? Seriously unless its a chromebook it should have been illegal to ship ANY computer with less than 16GB for at least the last 8-10 years.

The funnier thing is that Windows OEMs, up until this year, mostly all had 8GB variants so people could have a cheaper base model. That was until MS forced them to start at 16GB with CoPilot+. Of course, you don't know that because most reviews of Windows laptops are sponsored, creators get sent maxed-out laptops. As Apple does not pay for reviews, creators get peeved and buy the base 8GB model so they can flex on Apple; it is always good for views when Apple gets trolled.

what if the new MAC OS with "intelligence" inside with require 12-14GB of RAM to run the basic stuff and you'll only have 2GB left? Apple will still sell you the 24GB for +200$ and 32GB for +400. Also, what if the new MAC OS will require 100GB more storage for the "large language models" that can fit in the 16GB of RAM? and u'll be forced to buy the 512GB of storage for extra 200$ or 1TB for 400$ extra? Just don't buy Macs, they are not as great as Apple's marketing is saying.. they are always comparing to the old intel Macs or M1 :)

I am ashamed for Apple! While it has a great soc, the unupgradable memory and ssd is a no go for me! I have 32gb and around 9.5 tb on my pc built up over the years. I don't get it why would I ever want to be stuck or pay out so much for such cheap parts. I'm not the target audience.

Unless one is running a very large spreadsheet or AI models locally or running multiple virtual machines, when would one need 32 GB RAM? Unless one is a professional on a field, do regular people need that much RAM? You need 16GB to run a competent computer. I have 24GB RAM and I never use it all (other than VM, I use the extra RAM as very fast RAM Disks), What other uses are there for regular people?
