The problem I have as a “music producer” is the quantity of external peripherals and cables. Between my iLOK and external SSD for my sound library, some basic keyboard (piano keys) and audio interface, I’m not doing that much better than just carrying a rack mounted Mac mini and thin display. The laptop has not been very “portable” for remote work. Now throw in some mics and other bits (headphones etc). The better solution for me is just a rack mount flight case on casters. I can put a monitor and a few shelves in there…a foam lined set of drawers…strap everything down and accept that it’s a case. The idea of a laptop has just never worked out for me. If iLOK eventually moves to a zero dongle solution then paying a grand for the Apple on board storage is worth it. Despite being an absurd price it actually makes sense in comparison to all the external junk. If logic for iPAD eventually supports my 3rd party software…then a $4000 iPAD actually makes sense. I throw my RME baby face (audio interface) into its small hard shell case. I toss a few cables and a mic or two and headphones into a backpack and actually have “portability”. The price is absurd, BUT still less than custom cases for a bunch of secured peripherals. I think this all comes down to use case. There are circumstances where Apples obscenely overpriced storage is actually “cost effective”.

Sorry if I burst your bubble, but in the first four rows there are dual years, with the difference of ten years. Does this mean that your 2019 model is not the last year production?

No bubble burst. 😁 I doubt there were many (if any) of these Mac Pros produced after 2019, because the 2019 Mac Pro launched towards the end of that year. But also, there definitely wouldn't have been any 2013 Mac Pros produced in 2010 or 2011 - the Xeon E5 v2 CPUs didn't even launch until September 2013! If by any chance there are any out there with C, D, F or G in the serial, I can only guess that it would have to be a refurb or custom order machine made in 2020 or 2021.

I purchased the Orico awhile ago after viewing your review and installed a 4Tb SSD in it. It is now hosting all my photos as well as a Windows 11 VM. Since both the media and catalogue are on the SSD, I can plug the Orico into either my Mac Studio when I'm at home or MacBook Pro when I'm travelling and the experience is seamlessly the same. Fast but small external drives are a great option. The Qwiizlab looks good, but the Orico is more than fast enough for my typical use.

For those who work with big timelines, 3D camera tracking, Resolve's AI features, etc. the shared VRAM will definitely benefit you. I never thought that I can strangle my 3090 this hard and I'm not even going hard in using e.g. magic masks or relight a lot. Might put a second one in my system soon... Note: I'm doing everything I can to smooth things out - proxies, render caching, render in place, disabling clips during editing and enable them before rendering, etc... Edit: ESPECIYALLY the new upscaling feature with RTX hardware support just sucks up VRAM like it's nothing

And a NAS handles data storage.

The only problem with this method is that your voice recording will be recorded to either left or right channel the same as the screen audio. So in the end I hear myself speaking from the left speaker and the screen audio from the right.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 3 күн бұрын
Screen audio should remain in stereo. I think there is a way to route the microphone to both speakers, but I'll need to play with that. You can convert the clip to mono in a video editor and that should centralise the voice.

I've not done that specific test, but I have been using it as a master drive for video editing - multiple streams of 6K BRAW and 4K in ProRes 422 and H.265 - for hours at a time, with zero slowdowns or stutters. The transfer rates will depend on the drive used, and of course you will lose some native performance due to USB4 limitations and overheads, but the Qwiizlab enclosure seems to do a good job with the thermals.

i actually don't take issue with the "Apple tax" pricing, for the R and D reasons that you cite... so Apple can keep pushing the envelope. My issue with Apple's SSD storage is that they started soldering the SSD to the logic board in order to make the TouchBar MacBook Pro super THIN (which as we all know proved to be a disaster for insufficient thermals and faulty keyboard). So OK, Apple made the MacBook Pro THICKER in 2021 to fix these problems, and return a few ports they had taken away in 2016. However, they did NOT un-solder the SSD; and with this decision they have kept Mac users captive in several ways: No ability to upgrade the storage, or swap it out ourselves for an easy repair, or even keep a 2nd variation boot drive onhand for different projects or collaborations. Worst of all, when profesional users suffer a breakdown of their MacBook Pro, and the soldered SSD is the culprit, its not longer possible to boot the computer from an external and keep working! This happened to me with a late 2019 model, and thanks to Tim Cook's overly-tight supply chain, plus a chain of Applecare administrative failures, the repair of my $4500 MacBook "Pro" with its 4TB SSD took 28 days! Nearly a month without my main machine! Incidentally, 2 subsequent repairs with this same computer took 19 and 11 days respectively. Oftentimes, lengthy repairs are a direct result of soldered SSD. So in my opinion, and that of my professional collegues who use Macs on the road, Apple can charge whatever they want! But we would like to see them release a MacBook Premium, with modular storage (like a mobile version of Mac Pro), and we'd be happy to pay a premium price, and with swappable drives that are expensive and proprietary if need be. Ideally Apple would return their whole product line to modular storage, as an ethical nod to the sanctity of the consumer's data, but the iPhone-ization of everything makes this a pipe dream 🤣

Since APFS, I have found 1TB to be plenty sufficient for an internal system drive. The key is the APFS file structure. I use only two containers; one for macOS, and another as STORE. The macOS container typically has 6 or 7 OS partitions, each with no minimum size, letting them fight it out for themselves. As OSs are, by definition, in use one at a time. In the HFS days this would use a TB of its own, and with ridiculous waste. Apple’s system SSD is phenomenally fast at every file size, much better than any external drive and very few apps need that. It takes only a bit of research and trial and error to categorize your apps. My most critical apps are Pro Tools and Vectorworks, both large/slow apps which read and write on STORE container’s sole partition. As such, I have found 600/400 to be a good split. If you use only one or two macOS, 40/60 is a good place to start. Fortunately, all this complexity is handled perfectly by iCloud Drive and Time Machine, creating folderized backups of all my needs. Travel needs are easily met by USB/TB portables. no one actually needs 4TB internally.

The reason Apple sells SSD at a premium is to DISCOURAGE people from buying 2/4TB SSD never to clean up their drives. This also creates a dependency on iCloud storage. Realistically, who needs 2/4TB SSD unless you are a content creator or AI developer? If you make money off your laptop for a living, you can afford to premium. They are meant for professionals using the extra storage as a scratch drive. Implementing this hardware config this over long period of time changing people's usage pattern and not "hoard data". PC users are notorious in abusing storage. It doesn't move the industry forward. It keeps the industry stagnant. It is unsustainable to keep increasing the storage size of SSDs If you really need massive amounts of storage, that's what NAS / DAS are for anyways.

Thanks for exploring this very frustrating topic! I experimented with an ORICO USB4 M.2 NVMe enclosure, and got great speeds and it ran pretty cool even without a fan inside, but had problems with the cable being too stiff and the SSD getting disconnected too often (since i live very mobile, and can't be using my MacBook on a desktop all the time, and therefore need to velcro my SSD to the lid of my MacBook!). So I even tried Orico's right angle USB-4 cable, and still had the stiffness issue (regular USB-c or Thunderbolt cables are more flexible i guess). I might've kept experimenting with other cables, but i was having another issue... with the Crucial P3 Plus 4TB slowing WAY down once you've filled it up with 2 or 3TB of data (i mean slowing down to only 5 to 10% speed!) ...and yes, i tried a couple different variations of the P3).... So i gave up on this project when i found a 4TB MacBook Pro pre-owned at a great price (Not easy to find!). Later i found out that if you're planning on really using that 4TB of capacity, then you need an SSD with "TLC" spec. Almost 2 years later now, i'm looking to upgrade my MacBook; and i'm curious about other enclosures, and most especially if there are any USB-4 cables that have the right amount of flex, so they don't disconnect so easily! Anyway, i'll check back on the comments here, Thanks again, and cheers from Los Angeles

However, they did NOT un-solder the SSD; and with this decision they have kept Mac users captive in several ways: No ability to upgrade the storage, or swap it out ourselves for an easy repair, or even keep a 2nd variation boot drive onhand for different projects or collaborations. Worst of all, when professional users suffer a breakdown of their MacBook Pro, and the soldered SSD is the culprit, its not longer possible to boot the computer from an external and keep working! This happened to me a few years ago with a late 2019 model, and thanks to Tim Cook's tight supply chain, plus a chain of Applecare administrative failures, the repair of my $4500 MacBook "Pro" with its 4TB SSD took 28 days! Nearly a month without my main machine! Incidentally, 2 subsequent repairs with this same computer took 19 and 11 days respectively.

I love tgpro, it’s on all my Intel Macs, essential!

Why would you invest time and money into a quite expensive paper weight? No current OS is running on this machine and GPU always has been bad. Genuine question, as I have more than one of these TrashCans, collecting dust.

For fun? I come from a time when people played about with computers for entertainment. It’s also demonstrably more than a paperweight and you can easily install more recent OS releases with OCLP.

Yes. I don’t think there is any limit on capacity. If your motherboard supports drives that size then it should work.
