In short, this part one and two series of unofficial memory upgrade are basically garbage. I don't mean the quality of the video or am I trying to discourage the author from investigating further. The purpose of doing video like this should be praised the problem here is wells, it look like he doesn't know what he is doing. Anyone who have built a PC before would know that there are more research to be done before buying a stick of memory. Not just buy any memory stick and put it in and when thing don't work out, you blame the memory manufacturer. The point is the test method is wrong, this test isn't to test the 3rd party memory but to test the limit of the hardware device regardless of memory brand. Even if you have 16GB or 32GB stick of Synology brand, it still wouldn't work. So, let's get the disclaimer out of the way. I don't work for Synology nor Crucial, in fact I don't for any memory for flash memory manufacturers, distributors or dealers or have I have ever worked for any of them. So I have no bones in this regard. Whether any of them succeed or fail in this business I don't make money anyway. But I do lost money when more company exit the business and the price of the products goes up due to the law of supply and demand and the less companies in the business the one that are left has the power to marked up the prices. First let's start w/ the CPU. The J4025 CPU in the DS220+ made by Intel and Intel has specify that this CPU only support the maximum amount of RAM as 8GB. So, technically it's not Synology fault that doesn't support 8GB of RAM in the DS220+ unit. Wells, at least not entirely. Synology has the choice to use other CPU that support more memory, but I guess that might cannibalize the sale of higher end unit. With that said, this is not the 3rd party memory manufacturer fault. It's like you buy 17inch tire for you small car that doesn't made for 17inch chrome. It's the user fault for not doing the research first. In the past, when build your own PC, it's not just the CPU that can limit the maximum amount of memory, motherboard and chipset can also. But for specialize devices like a NAS, the CPU/MB/chipset are basically in one piece. Second issue here is the choice of memory. And the DS220+ is a bad example to use here. The reason for that is because the DS220+ has a built in 2GB of RAM soldered to the mainboard and not removable. Ideally you would wants to have matching stick if you want to have to piece of memory(and I don't means maching the size). And since one of the stick is not removable you are basically limited by what's already installed/built-in. If you look at the forum elsewhere about installing memory on a NAS even for other models, you would see that the prefer RAM choice (other than the required specification like size and pin number) would first dictate by the memory voltage, speed and latency. And if you want to narrow it down more, so you would most likely to get more compatibility is the choose memory stick that is made of the same rank and the memory chip that is made by the same manufacturer as the OEM. For example a Crucial memory stick mostly made up of bunch of Micron chips, and I think most of the Synology sticks are made up from Samsung chips. Keep in mind that you are still limited by what the actual CPU is supported also. So, since the DS220+ has soldered 2GB of RAM and the CPU is limited to 8GB of RAM. And there is no such thing as 6GB of RAM stick in this case, your choice is the limit of 6GB of RAM total w/ a choice of 4GB RAM stick. And if this video is to serve its purpose, the the best choice is to pick a 4GB RAM made by 3rd party manufacturer that has similar spec to the one sold by Synology as optional upgrade.

Nice video, I've actually seen that video glitch before on my DS918+. Interestingly enough that glitch appeared on first configuring the unit, before I had even upgraded to a non supported amount of memory. The redline as well as the bar below breaking to another line overlapping the legend. After I upgraded that unit to 2x 8GB the glitch persisted until the next DSM update when it disappeared. I assumed that this was a bug that was fixed in the upgrade, but it seems it's still present in the latest DSM. The memory upgrade may have triggered the bug, it may even trigger it 100% of the time on the new units, I can't tell. What I can tell you is that I ran mine with that glitch for about 6 months without any other issues. Docker containers worked without issue, built in functionality worked without issue. So it may not be as bad as you expect. It would be interesting to see if others get the glitch without upgrading memory on the DSx20+ units.
@pablohontoya44644 жыл бұрын
I get the redline glitch on my DS415+, which has never had any memory upgrade to it and has been running flawlessly for 5 years. Interestingly, if I access the NAS using firefox or chrome on my pc, then I don't see the glitch, but if I access it using chrome on a chromebook then I do see the glitch. So I don't think the presence of the redline glitch, in isolation, is in any way an indication of possible issues with the NAS.

It's the same concept Printer manufacturers use. If you don't use our overpriced ink cartridges, you run the risk of damaging your printer and it will void your warranty. It's about the company's increasing profits and driving fear into the user who uses another brand. Synology could simply tests Off the Shelf ram modules and list compatible modules that work with their devices, the way many Motherboard manufacturers do.
@kylec.5476 Жыл бұрын
That concept is called FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt), and it was pioneered by Microsoft
@yrmuq Жыл бұрын
Its not the same concept, ram you buy just once, ink in the other hand every time its ended. Synology cant test every module on the market, its nonsense. But they test modules, that they sell. And furthermore, my unmodded, brand new DS220+ upgraded to DSM 6.2.4-25556 has the graphical glitch where the redline follows the mouse, and remains on there until the mouse leaves the graph area.... It would have been nice to see you transfer a large file while the disks are spun down, to see if the cache would accommodate the file transfer, while the disks spin up... Since I am interested in upgrading my ram to fix frozen transfers, while disk are spinning up.

I was looking into getting a NAS and i bumped into this clip. I am sorry but i don't see the point of your test. Intel states on it's site that the J4025 takes only 8 GB ram. So, no point in adding more( not a bug, a feature). Also the "should use our memory" makes sense. on the 218 model there is a second memory slot. if you make a memory upgrade, it would be better to use a matching pair of memory sticks( so if you want to go for 8GB, take the box apart and replace both sticks). On this model i could not find any disassembly cllips and i can only hope they did not solder the chips on the motherboard( so it would be nice if you could make a clip on that, and if you get to it try the tests with a replaced matching pair of memory modules) as long as the memory installed is not ECC, any kit of 2x4GB laptop DDR4 should do the trick.

I'd be curious about the legalities of Synology possibly invalidating warranty for using a different brand of memory. In Australia I do not think it is legal for them to do that. If you disassemble the unit then maybe an issue, but not with a user upgrade option. I can see memory size limits being an issue if the software is not optimised for higher memory, but branding just seems like arrogance from Synology, as long as the timing of the memory is right. Are the graphics glitches to do with memory or to do with the way the CPU is addressing it due to not being optimised for that much RAM?

Fascinating they place the ram slot right next to the hdd on that model if they did not support it then they would configure the Synology os to fail boot if it detects 8gb dimms or go apple route and flat out reject ram that has spd as not Synology ram (witch can be get around by changing the spd model name to match the Synology ram name, not really simple to do but is possible) (just noticed you put a 16gb dimm not 8gb with the hidden 2gb dim under the unit, if it used 2x8gb it probably wouldn't of gone wacky on the ram usage page, be interesting if it take 2x16gb as it accepted 1x16+2gb , ideally should be in pairs anyway for duel channel unless the atom cpu is single channel with 2 slots) Officially the cpu shouldn't boot with more then 8gb installed ram,, I guess the Synology system is not following Intel bios guidelines as it let you boot with 16+2 ram (which technically shouldn't be a problem as the ram controller it self can handle 2x32gb perfectly fine) but normally these atom type cpus are hard coded by Intel in firmware to not boot if there is more then 8gb of ram or anything over 8gb is ignored Did you successfully try and use the 16gb inside a Vm to see if it crashed or not maybe remove the 2gb and see if it still had the visual bug history lines on it (as the visual bug in the ram usage page is likely due to there been more then 10gb installed or more then 16gb installed, might not do it if you put 2x8gb or 1x16gb in it) As I have been looking at other Synology (actual) 16gb (not 18gb your title is wrong) videos and the visual bug you have in your 18gb in the memory page is normal with 16gb (you probably need to pull the 2gb out and use 16gb stick only or use 2x8gb witch would be the recommended setup)

So u spend half the video explaining "the risks", but for the actual installation, your camera cant even see u install the ram. Why waste ur audiences time?

The Intelchip can only access 8 GB of RAM^^ so everything >8gb ram is uselesse :)

its not true, i dont know why intel says only 8gb. Update: i actually tested by installing 16gb ram in ds920plus, YES IT DOES GET USED BY THE SYSTEM! i was not running any application, just populating my nas drives...i checked in resource monitor, its shows 20gb memory, about 2.1 gb reserved and used by system, rest 17.8gb was used as cache. i was only left with 208mb free memory, rest all was used as cache. so in short yes not only does system recognize 16gb ram but actually use it as well.

How to put the memory in, without actually SHOWING how to put the memory in - what a waste of time.
