I use billhooks quite a bit on my homestead. My first was a Noborigama billhook (Japanese tree pruning billhook). At first I wasn't sure what to do with it but now, I find the billhook to be my favorite all around tool for cutting forage for my animals, bamboo, brush (especially brambles) and, yes, small trees. I can quickly chop down a small tree, up to about 3" in diameter. I've purchased four or five different types of billhook and can say that different styles and weight of blade favor different kinds of work. The heavier blade of the one in this video would make it better for cutting small trees and heavy brush. It has a hooked blade because the most efficient way to cut these things is more to pull the blade toward oneself after coming from the other side of the piece one wants to cut. The curve augments the cutting power of the blade. I am currently trialing a billhook which looks just like the one above, minus the paint. It came with no handle and I had to put one on it. I quickly learned that a shorter handle is better than a longer handle, for ergonomic's sake. The comment about "shaking in the handle, refers precisely to my greatest doubt about this design. If one can feel the handle moving while using the billhook, it will pretty quickly work itself free and/or break. Other billhooks have a tang which is inserted into a slot in the handle and then one drills holes through the handle AND tang, driving rivets through both, to hold things in place. This design is quite durable but more problematic to repair when the handle does eventually break. The IMACASA Billbook, which costs about $17 is pretty darned nice I purchased two of them and have no issues with them. I have a billhook with a full tang and wooden handle made in Pakistan, which looks as if it will last forever. It's nice, but also kind of heavy. I use my billhook a lot, and more often on lighter stuff, so a lot of weight is not necessary Here's a link to a thread on the Noborogami billhook. seedsavingnetwork.proboards.com/thread/535/noborigama-sickle-japanese-billhook

Do companies not care about quality any more? I get it, $17, but come on, care a little

Do consumers care about quality anymore? You wouldn't pay more for it, would you?
