17 MINUTES of DiRT RALLY 2.0 Gameplay (Pro Rally Driver)

GameByte recently had the chance to check out Dirt Rally 2.0 and whilst doing so got some capture from professional rally and esports rally racer Jon Armstrong.
First off we show off some of the USA map with steering wheel controls and then Poland with DualShock 4 controls. Needless to say Jon was significantly better at the game than us. We also show off the Subaru Impreza 1995 and the Nissan Datsun.
Codemasters have always been the masters of rally games and DiRT Rally 2.0 is shaping up to be another hit.

I appreciate the similarity to Phil Mills yes, but the audio simulation for the co-driver just doesn't sound like he is in the car beside you. I liked that as you drove faster in the first game, the co driver's calls got more intense.

I think they're capable of it. If they weren't at least conscious of what made Dirt Rally a success independent of the main series, they would've announced Dirt 5, not Dirt Rally 2.0.

@@Sammie_Sorrelly lets get things straight here, Dirt came from Rally (Colin McRea rally). Rally was 1st not Dirt. Dirt Rally is the real successor to the Colin McRea Rally series. Dirt was the spin off, trying new things to break the American markets, Dirt Rally is like the homecoming where as Dirt turned into something of a tumour after the 1st game and McRea's passing. R.I.P Colin.

@@kris8263 Dirt has been an arcadey series since it started being called Dirt. Dirt Rally was essentially a more sim-like spin-off, whereas 4 was another main series installment, so of course it was more arcadey again - it was never meant to be realistic like Dirt Rally. Calling the upcoming game Dirt Rally 2.0 obviously means it's a successor to the more realistic game, Dirt Rally, rather than the arcadey main series.

While being a fan of DR and hyped, some things in this game look weird. Excessive reflections and amount of water on roads and when they are dry it seems they are extremely bland and difficult to see the geometry of the road. Co-driver sounds like a lottery number announcer.

It doesn't matter if the co-driver they used is a long time vet or a champion. The co-driver's reaction to how you were driving in the first time was key to the immersion. If people keep bringing up how the voice in 2.0 isn't reacting, it matters.

Although they try to have Phil reacting in real-time with some recreation of movement, he still remains calm as he does in reality. Doesn't that just make him good at the job? Dirt Rally one had different versions of how the co driver spoke (quiet, normal, shaking) depending on what was happening. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough and added to the experience.

You know, people complain a lot about the physics in 2.0, but probably never realized that just like with Dirt Rally 1, we do have the opportunity to _MOD_ the physics we want! There is a mod attempting to make the physics more realistic for the first Dirt Rally game, so maybe the tarmac physics could be fixed like this?

Initially I was disappointed how dull and repetitive the US environment looks. Maybe it's just this stage but not much going on other than lots of trees really. Reminds me of a generated 'Your Stage' from Dirt 4 (which is not a good thing!) Poland, however looks a lot way more interesting!

That was my main issue with DR1, if you knew one stage, you basically knew all of the location, it looked so uniform everywhere. Gotta give it to the WRC games and even to V-rally 4 for interesting environments

USA needs to have leaves covering the ground to make the road hard to see in spots. + Bigger mud puddles. That would be authentic Michigan logging roads.

Leaves flying effects wouldn't hurt as well, they actually do have nice water spray on windshield during race behind opponent in mud/water holes, lets hope they still have and improved puddles splashes. They did improve quantity of particle dust (good biscuit finally), but it still vanishes behind vehicle in blocks too fast. One would hope since they don't have to focus on open world, they would make racing focused corridor game much much better on just FX in almost 2000 freaking 20

I think that even if it's not what it's like in real life games should try to immerse you more to make up for their limitations, especially when you want to have the experience from your couch. As a simulation driving enthusiast I would have to agree with everyone else. If your going to make a simulation rally game how can you not follow the trend of VR, sure there no market for it right now but a great way to attract people to want to get a VR and Dirt rally and wheel system is most likely they saw someone playing it in VR. Also another reason is people (Specifically Sim Drivers) are waiting on 2 or 3 gen VRs which will include 4k - Eye Tracking Resolution - Wireless and some other little things that VR Producers are not to far behind but currently there are some of us that do use today's 1st gen and are the reason some people get into VR Sim Driving in the First place, because they watch people like me who stream VR Driving Simulators.The hole reason I got into this was because I always wanted to drive in different styles like GT racing - Tandem Drifting - Rally Driving - F1 Etc. but that would hurt my wallet and possible harm my life so when I saw VR Sim Driving I knew this was the answer. The wheel market is getting better every year so I also knew this was the time to buy a wheel system but like I said before, the VR market is still fresh and people are still waiting on Gen 2 or 3 before going VR with there Driving Simulator. The best thing CodeMasters can do is add VR to convince people this is what they need, because without it its just going to turn out to be just another monitor rally game that will surely die off if it doesn't follow the future of Driving Simulation by using VR!!! Literally every other big time Sim Driving game uses VR.... Assetto Corsa (& Competizione) - IRacing - Project Cars 2 - American and Euro Truck Simulator (In Beta Form) and more to come. So this hole "there's no market" nonsense has to stop... obviously there's no market, its up to games like this to make people want to get this kinda stuff so there is a market for it.

ya last time i checked the last 2 Sim Driving Games (PC2 & Competizione) did come out with VR. Of course the older ones like assetto iracing etc came out before VR was truly a thing. Im just stating facts here not "crying about it" for all I care go ahead and don't put VR. But CodeMasters go to the extent and have the decency to say that they will "Possibly" add VR to the game if there is a "market for it"..... Seriously just give us a strait answer already because i want to support the game now and buy it but if your not going to take VR as an after thought then your losing supporters, and as small as the VR supporters are, they are the ones that people see playing and tell themselves they want to do this. Facts Not "Crying" Already did that when i got in Competizione VR... its so beautiful xD. I get it that codemasters don't want to add VR until the game is complete. But tell us that. The simulation quality has *nothing* to do with VR. And in a driving sim VR is not nearly as important as in something like DCS. Then again, in DCS for it to be useful you need it to be high resolution...

@@getsideways7257 never said anything about quality, DR2.0 has great quality in every aspect, it's really a great looking game right now but that's not what I was talking about, VR has everything to do with immersion not quality. Some people want immersion over having the feeling of driving in your room looking at a monitor, but one thing both VR users and monitor users can agree on is we all want good quality so I don't know where your going with all that. I never mentions anything about quality. I but want CM to stop di*king around and just tell us that they will add VR after the game is done and allow ALL VR USERS including WMR and future VRs to use the game. Not make it exclusive to oculus like they did with the VR add-on to Dirt Rally 1. I would seriously play everyday I can if they made VR happen. Hey to be honest they probably will but after I heard them say that they want to wait till their is "a market for VR", well then I knew they were not going to take VR serious and prolong it forever... if we even see it at all.

Again, VR doesn't have anything to do with simulation. Having or not having VR support says absolutely nothing about how good a sim is a sim. So, please don't make it sound like it's the most important thing about DR2. VR users need to stop thinking that everything in the gaming and especially the sim world is revolving around them.

i love people who judge physics realism just by looking at the replay footage, jesus christ give this sim a chance. For me personally who was extremely let down by dirt 4 physics these look quite good, the only functionality in rally games we need the most besides good physics are some kind of track creator otherwise it will become as dirt rally 2015 - a sprint race simulator where you drive same track over and over and over again...

I've put 860 hours into DR on Steam. Not to sound like an arsehole, but I can feel how the game will play from just watching a replay. It's going to have the same problems as DR, and the tracks don't look as good.

The Game is beautiful and the driving mechanics are nearly flawless, but the 1 thing that I can nit pick is that the mud on the ground looks more like glass than water, like a mirror, exaggerated reflection is all, probably an easy fix, for someone like me things that reflect too much are really annoying, and distracting, but other than that, it lives up to the original

There needs to be Co-Op in this. Would love for a buddy to make his own notes on a shakedown, then see how refined we can get throughout a season as I fight to keep the car in tact. a single "Left...ummm..." could result in a season ending crash. That'd be amazing.

The first Dirt Rally got VR after launch. It took a while, but it supports it. First time I tried I almost freaked out l when I looked to my right and there was someone beside me! It was only the co-driver, but still. He was a BIG guy!

I love how it seems more slidey like in real rally. The first DR could be a tad too grippy, which would often kill the engine while doing hairpin turns. This seems to be handling that better.

Pretty sure this will be the best Driving game of 2019. The locations all look amazing and there seems be a huge list of cars to choose from. Most excited for the historical cars and its fun watching Jon Armstrong, he makes it looks so easy. Cool that Codemasters hired a real rally driver and I think he adds a lot to the game.

Possibly. But I wouldn't underestimate WRC 8. Kylotonn made big steps forward with each game since their WRC 5. WRC 7 was already very good, in many ways better than Dirt 4. If Kylotonn makes similar progress between WRC 7 and 8 as they did between WRC 6 and 7, they could very well surpass Codemasters. It will certainly have a lot more locations and stages than DR2 and newest generation of WRC cars is pretty big draw as well.

i used to do that in og dirt rally. mount monitor right behind wheel on wheel stand. turn off in game wheel. then i discovered vr. have not played on monitor since other that to let others play that didnt want vr etc.

You definitely need to turn the steering wheel off when you drive it yourself, but in a replay it's generally better to be able to see the wheel.

The amount of people judging the game before they have ever played it annoys me. You self proclaimed Rally Pros really know everything about cars and their handling right? So if you feel like this is Not enough "realism" for you then go back to Slippery sliding in RBR. No VR no buy for me, DR1 is the finest sim in VR currently & was stocked when I heard of plans for DR2, I've had this in my wishlist since it was posted on Steam & only just found there is no intention of implementing VR in the game today, I honestly wonder if developers are on the same planet as their customers

I thought they've done it before, but i wonder how much input there really is. Does he say...yes that's fun to play, or does he go in details...it slides too much in mud, vehicle dash vibration should be more visible, ect. I've seen this for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/aojGeYmheb2Xprc and when the camera is mounted good, it actually looks pretty boring, the suspension just swallows a lot, if that would be in game, it would be probably better to add some vehicle reaction to road surface and suspension movement and it seems they've done it already pretty nice

@@lukeharvey2006 its not a flipping 'fad' if you are saying that you havnt tried it. specifically you definitely cant have tried it for sim racing with a wheel. or even more specifically for dirt rally. and tf your only defence to this comment is going to be the graphics/ resolution in the headset then it definitely isnt a 'fad' because that can, will and currently IS getting better. vr is not going away. vr is improving. hence vr is not a 'fad' it is VERY useful for simracing,m not to mention 10 times more fun. i will give you that alot of vr experiences out there are 'fads' but vr itself is certainly not. dont be stupid.

The second track is much more my style, and what I want to see out of this game. I know if every location was the same, it would be boring. I was just concerned that there weren't any jumps, uneven roads, or bad camber turns. Still, I think Wales and Finland were great for showing off Dirt Rally, and I wish Dirt Rally 2 had tracks more like those. Here's hoping there is a DLC that offers more locations. And VR, omg VR.

@@getsideways7257 I always thought that the Codies outdid themselves when they made Colin McRae 2005...damn that was so much fun but now with Win 10 when I re-installed it , it says it's incompatible. Great rallys on CM2005...That's what I loved abut Dirt Rally...every rally was a ton of fun. DR2.0 doesn't look like much fun at all...Boring stages in all of them....not worth paying $91 for the deluxe version.

@@gpk9993 The stages themselves weren't half bad in CMR'05, but the handling is another matter. Even though I don't find RBR to be the perfect rally sim by a long stretch, I'd take it over anything Codies made so far any time of day (DR1 included). As far as interesting stages go, did you give WRC7 a try? I wouldn't say it's all that arcade as people claim it to be (in fact, I wouldn't say DR1 is much better in that regard, but these two things are just different). For me it's almost the winner. I just wish it was still more or a sim...
