LUCIE. Okay, thank you for listing all of these amazing options and promoting a more eco friendly and sustainable lifestyle...BUT you NEED to mention that the most sustainable thing you can do is use up all of the products you currently own before replacing them....if you have plastic Tupperware that still works perfectly fine, don’t throw it away to replace it with glass or something else. Don’t throw away packages of plastic straws or cling wrap...use it up. Use up what you have and then replace it with a better option.

I guess it depends a little on if you want to have a healthier lifestyle and feel that there is a risk with using plastic to keep your food. OR if you want to save the environment and therefore use up what you have, including plastic.

I wanted to get all the plastic out of my home so I instead donated all of my plastic Tupperware and replaced with glass immediately!!! But either option sounds good to me

Those are great tips! However, do not forget one thing: use things that you already have! It is not sustainable at all to buy new glass containers if you already have plastic Tupperware. Yes, I know, we all want to have those fancy eco friendly items. But if we do already have a not-as-sustainable option in our home, it makes more sense to keep using it instead of throwing it away. Because only once we throw those things away, they become trash and end up in our oceans.

the one reason I didn't like the video is that she makes it look like you have to buy all these shiny new things, when in reality, the most sustainable and zero waste way is to reach for what you already have. Theres no need to buy a "shopping pack" for going to bulk stores, you can use the jars and bags you already have.

Azalecita Ikr! The thing that triggers me the most in those videos are bamboo to go cutlery. WE ALL HAVE CUTLERY AT HOME so just use that 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

@@Isabella-de7kv While it's true that it's a better option to use the stainless steel ones you have at home rather than buy new ones, I use the bamboo cutlery when I travel, especially on flights since I am not allowed to bring steel cutlery. Other than that steel cutlery makes more sense

Polyvinyl chloride is a polymer, which does not contain the harmful to human health monomer: vinyl chloride. The reason as to why there is no vinyl chloride left in PVC, is because vinyl chloride is a gas at standard temperature and pressure. As a chemical engineer, I can say that PVC is not harmful to human health.

Your videos are awesome Lucie and it's great that you're talking about such an important topic to your followers! As others have mentioned though it would have been better to have stressed that you don't have to buy new things to be more eco-friendly ... use your plastic tupperware to store wires etc so you're not just throwing it out, buy glass containers second hand. Also would have been great to hear options for sustainably getting rid of your old mattress (rather than it just going to landfill) thanks for starting an important conversation :)

Here’s something I’m confused about. Why should I get rid of my plastic straws, spray bottles, etc. when they work perfectly fine? I’m concerned about putting them back into the environment before they should be. If that makes sense?
@rileyh9515
@rileyh9515 5 жыл бұрын
Rachael Gonzales you don’t have to throw everything away! You can just phase them out so you still get all the use out of them. When you need a replacement (eg when you run out of straws) then you can go out and buy the reusable version. That way you get the full life out of your product but you still reduce your waste in the long run :)

Here's an eco friendly tip. When you bee's wax wraps begin to not work as well, you can simply grate up bee's wax and mix a touch of jojoba oil and recoat your wraps before composting. They can actually last years if you are will to put in some maintenance work.

Thanks for sharing! Be careful when using or recommending essential oils for diffusing or applying to the body. Not all of them are suitable for kids, pets, & adults. Lavender & tea tree oil can be harmful to males (ie hormone disruption) and they could grow breasts. Each person should check with their doctor and/ or natural path. Also, beware when using metal straws in warm/ hot liquids ( same goes for metal thermos or bottles) as they can leach out harmful chemicals. Better to use glass or ceramic containers or biodegradable straws.🙂

Sustainable idea: don’t get rid of your perfectly good mattress for a brand new one? Also organic is way overhyped. chemicals aren’t all bad and sometimes to get a product to be organic it requires way more labour, water, energy and is overall worse off for the world.

USE WHAT YOU HAVE FIRST!!! Gosh will you stop telling people to buy zero waste things when they may be able to use what they already have and repurpose them ! This is the second video I see from you where you tell people to go and buy zero waste stuff before they finish what they already have . You lady are part of the problem!
@luciebfink
@luciebfink 5 жыл бұрын
If people were to ask me what to do with their old stuff, I would either tell them to use it up, donate it, or up-cycle/recycle it. Just because I don't say it in the video doesn't mean that's not how I'd respond to or advise somebody. And I would definitely argue that I'm not part of the problem but that I'm likely doing more than the average person is to affect POSITIVE change. Have a great day!

So what would I do with my plastic Tupperware and the other things that are not "sustainable /eco-friendly" aren't these just going to end up in the garbage or somewhere bad? I totally support being eco-friendly etc, I just always wonder what do with that stuff... I also use a lot of cotton-pads for my face so I recently bought some reusable ones on Amazon! :)
@luciebfink
@luciebfink 5 жыл бұрын
there are recycling programs you can use to 'dispose' of them safely (so they can be turned into something new!), OR you can give them away / donate them to people who need them and don't have the luxury of choosing glass vs. plastic!
@danip4211
@danip4211 5 жыл бұрын
The most sustainable option is always to use what you have for as long as possible. From someone who is graduating with a biology degree and did my senior thesis on plastic pollution and its breakdown, reusing the containers for as long as possible is the best action. If storing food in plastic is a concern for you, use glass containers (I like secondhand mason jars or repurposed glass pasta sauce jars) and you can use the plastic for organization or storage of other things. If and when the time comes for you and that plastic item to part ways: either give it to a friend who can use it, donate it (there is a concern here that the item could be thrown away by the donation center), or determine if you can recycle it properly in your area. If none of those options are available or the right choice, then throwing it away to the landfill is the last choice.
@brookerthebaker

Yes, that is exactly what I plan on doing! Using things until they are no longer usable, and then moving to more sustainable options. :)

This one is similar to using reusable sanitary towels, parents can get reusable nappies/diapers, or towelling nappies as they used to be called I think. I know my science teacher mentioned using them. If you can get natural fabric ones, they're probably a lot more breathable than synthetic materials so it might help with preventing nappy rash but don't quote me on that.

Another tip try making a bamboo straw! First grab a skinny straw size stem of bamboo , then cut them into pieces and sand them until they are smooth, next take a tool and push the stuff inside of the straw out. If you are sure your bamboo does not have ANY chemicals sprayed on it you can put it in the dishwasher, if your bamboo does have some stuff around it NOT pesticides then you can boil it to wash it all off. There you go you made a straw that is not damaging our environment now go out there and make some for your friends and family or workplace, they make great gifts too!😊😊
