To avoid injures to elbow ( Joe Gibs has his bow hand elbow BANDAGED ALREADY!) and joints i would not take more that MY_WEIGHT/2 = 112 lbs bow. So with an appropriate training i can shoot it 4-6 days/week for at least 200 arrows daily. Dont GET INJURED! God dang, I'm over here drawing 50 pounds at the age of 15 and not trying to over exaggerate but I could feel the struggle in drawing that bow
@ichiban_co.3 жыл бұрын
@Ry Blosser not bad honestly for a 12 year old, pulling 40 pounds with a bow is different than just pulling something that ways 40 pounds

Most start at 30 pounds and most train technique and accuracy with 40 to 60 pound bows. Mate of mine can draw 170 all day but mainly practices with his 55 pound bow.

Sheesh...my "everyday" bow is 65 pounds, and some of my younger nephews and cousins can't even pull that. But now I feel like I'm using a child's bow. LOL
@patricj951 Жыл бұрын
I earlier practised archery and had a 42 pounds recurve. It happened that I met a person who had a 65 pounds hunting recurve. He let me try it but I could not pull it. But some of my friends could not pull my 42 pound bow. I understand 65 is above what average person can pull.
@arekpetrosian4965 Жыл бұрын
@@patricj951 I started with a 32 pound bow when I was about 12 or so. Moved up to a 41 pound bow after a year or two, and now my 65 pounder is my "daily driver." Feels comfortable to me, but I get that it's beyond what a lot of people can pull. It takes practice. Heh...like anything else, really.
@patricj951 Жыл бұрын
@@arekpetrosian4965 While strength is very individual it's like with strength in general possible to increase the strength. A target shooter who continue with his, for example, 44 pounds bow will not be stronger unless he starts to pull stronger bows. And yes, of course this is possible with strength training with weights or rubber band as well. Because I have not practise archery in many years I will start with 30, or at most 40 pounds. My goal is to be able to shoot with 50 or more.
@arekpetrosian4965 Жыл бұрын
@@patricj951 All very true. Practice, practice and then practice some more. But what's amazing to me is that when you see these heavier bow weights being pulled, a LOT of the time, the person pulling the bow doesn't look all that strong. For example, the guy in this video doesn't look like he could could pull a 200 pound bow. I am actually below average in strength, since age is creeping up on me, and at 60 I've lost quite a bit, physically. But like I said, my bow is a 65 pounder, and younger, more fit relatives can't pull it. Kind of weird, really. (To me, at least. LOL)

Hey Joe, quick series of questions here: Do you think medieval bowmen would have done some sort of warmup like you do? Obviously not with resistance bands, but do you think that they naturally would have understood the need to be limber so they wouldn't pull a muscle in battle? Or would they have just shot through the pain in the heat of battle? Is there even any evidence of something like that or no?

Hey Joe! I've been having a look at Shadiversity's videos about knocking the arrow on the right side of the bow. I'm sure you're aware of the bickering online now on wether or not warbow archers knocked on the left or the right. My technique for pulling is very similar to yours, and with a 165lbs bow, there is no way I can balance the arrow on the right, but maybe I'm also not training like the did back then. My own take on this is that people would knock the arrow on whatever side they felt natural, and that in the experience of the people I know who pull actual heavy warbows (not just 80-110lbs) knocking on the right is way more tricky and an unnescesary handicap. You have any thoughts on this? As one of the few people being able to draw 200lbs and above, I think your opinion on the matter is rather relevant. Greetings from a norwegian warbow archer;) (got my bows from Daniel, believe he has made a couple of yours too)

Fell in love with archery the first time I got to shoot a bow for 45 minutes. Never felt so grounded and happy. Had sore muscles the next days. Immediately ordered my own bow, though. It just arrived and has 30 lbs. I feel like it's twice the amount I had while test shooting, I can barely get the string to my chin and got a very shakey grip hand. So much fun though. Love this sport, it's super meditative, relaxing, exciting, never felt so happy after a sports activity. Now I just gotta get used to 30 lbs draw or buy a second bow after shooting 5 arrows already xD Respect for drawing 210 lbs Oô Oô oô

What a ton of people miss, is that you need to do warm-ups, and I am so happy to see him doing these. They did have methods to warm up back in the day. You can seriously rip muscles off their fixated point in your body by doing this without correct training and warm-ups.

Depending on range, a speed shooter would already have three arrows inside their target before he even drew that beast of a bow. If longer, then the fella with a longbow may have a upperhand in range, but probably not accuracy so much?

One thing that is overlooked is the grip strength that is also tested, not just the back. I've seen a guy try to show off and pull a 70/80 lb bow with no prior training, and held the bow with his thumb on the belly. He got about 25 inches in and lost grip of the bow, cracked himself right in the nose.
