After struggling with the loss of the HV on my 453, I used a small B+K for audio work until some dirtbag stole it. I was lucky to find a 465 locally, in VG+ condition. After a brief run through of the functions I took it home for a buck thirty, which included the cart, operators' and service manuals, and a big box of probes, adapters, and cables. Now I'm re-learning the 465 which is a kick. Very happy to find this video. Liking & subscribing right now. THANKS !

I bought a Tek 465 back in the late 80's when the company I worked for (Varian Associates) was clearing out a bunch of excess equipment. I think I paid $50 for it back then and it came with the owners manual along with a service manual. It worked great for several years then the trace started to become intermittent and finally disappeared. The indicator lamps still light up so it at least has some power. Looks like I'll have to pull it apart to see what's going on. I'm willing to bet that some of the capacitors have bitten the dust after this many years. This video will be very helpful.

Classic scope, spent many long nights in university electronics lab studying all the knobs on this scope until I understood what they were for. 30 years later I would still meet senior staff engineers who had no idea what is the reason between normal and auto trigger, or trigger hold-off.

Good troubleshooting, thanks for sharing! We used these scopes a lot back in the 1980's to align the video chain on the cardiac cath labs in hospitals. The video was 1024 line rate (yes, we had HD video back then, pretty cool) and these scopes were great for video camera alignment. We also used the little Sony/Tek 314 storage scopes to capture the kV and mA waveforms for the x-ray exposure output. If I knew then what I know now, I would have saved a few to restore. Most of them got thrown away by the company and got replaced with Tek 2221 and 2230 digital storage scopes. The triggering was much better on the older scopes. I think I still have one of the old 2221 or 2211's somewhere, but no more 465's. Thanks again!

Boy, that sure takes me back. I fixed many of these in another life. The second power switch position was used for models with an option to run on 12 or 24 VDC power. These had an inverter board, and a separate option added a battery pack that was stacked under the 465 or 475, the full width and depth of the scope, full of big, fat NiCd cells. It was heavy. Anyway, the second power switch turned on the inverter, when DC power was selected with a separate slide switch. The inverter-equipped scopes used a different main power transformer that had both 120/240V and 12/24V primary windings.

A few years back, after working for many years with digital scopes, I got a bit nostalgic for the "good old" analog days of my youth, so knowing the reputation of this scope I actually picked up a very good 465B on eBay. I didn't have to fix anything - it was in perfect operating order. Even the feet that were missing on the one here also have slots to wrap the cord around for storage - typical of 1960's style (even though the 465B was from 1980). The scope worked fine and kept every promise, but I never actually found anything it could do better than my digital ones, and because it was so big and heavy I didn't ever want to take it anywhere, so it started gathering dust. I can think of a hundred things my newer scopes do all the time that this one cannot, but I can't really think of a single thing the other way round, except for its beautiful vintage look - so I ended up selling it off. I thought I would like the 465B, but I just never did. If I were to feel the yearning to look into an analog scope today, I would probably be more drawn to a more capable contender like the 2465.

I guess you could say that the 465 was the Simpson 260 of scopes in it's day. It was the industry standard from the time of it's introduction in the late 1970's and was made for many years right through the 1980's. They were on just about every university electronics lab in the country and well as in industry and manufacturing. I wouldn't worry too much about "unobtanium" parts in these Buddy. They made so many of these units over a long period of time that there are still plenty of parts donors out there. Thanks for another great video. 73 Doug.

Hi Mike, I was sa Field Engineer in the 80's late 90's and literally flew all over North America with a Tek 465 or 465B with me. Since the late 90's I have owned 2 electronics businesses and I have a number of Tek 465 and 475 scopes I use to this day. They are unbelievably dependable and seldom ever give a problem. Now with some age on them I occasionally have a problem and it's usually a capacitor. There are some tantalums in the 46 and 475 and i replace them with electrolytics when I have the room. I did lose a transistor on the input of channel 1 on a 465, my fault. I have used other scopes including HP, B&K, Heathkit but NOTHING beats a decent Tek scope. The new digital scopes are fine and multi color trace is nice but when I really need to find an intermittent problem, I always use the 465 or 475. I think you will find the 465 to be your goto scope very soon. I remember in the 80's in particular, walking through airports around the country and occasionally seeing another FE lugging a 465 scope as well. We serviced large disk drives, Mag tape units and troubleshot mainframe power supplies where you might have 30 or more large power supplies in the system including system, drive farm, tape farm and just one had excessive ripple and causing system crashes. The 465 always saved the day. Oh, we were not allowed to check our scopes and had to hand carry them on our flights. That was back when no one had roll around luggage. Yes, we would lug thos 465's with our briefcases. No wonder my arms are longer than most peoples. LOL 73, Glenn WA4AOS

Hello Buddy !! Good to see you again !! Good progress on the 465 !I bought a Tek 465 with the scope mobile about 5 years ago from P+T Surplus in Kingston N.Y. for 75 dollars the probe case was with it also with one probe. Got it home checked it out and it was working A.O.K. I still have it and it is still working unit.I have used it a lot! and I plan on doing a fair amount of P.M. Work on it shortly like cleaning and replacing some filter caps and some of the caps in the high voltage area, including a few tantalums that like to go bad !! Thanks for a really good troubleshooting video. Learned a lot about the methodology and the logical steps you take to zero in on a problem. I was able to follow your process and it made perfect sense to me right up to the one hour mark. How did you know to question the tantalum capacitor? You seemed to instantly recognize it had been previously replaced and suspected it to be shorted. This had me question my confidence in being able to troubleshoot. It’s like we went from a systematic process to magic. 😉

If you want any horizontal sweep set horizontal display to A and trig mode to Auto. Then play with the A trigger level. I noticed those switches were not in the right position. Another quick test is to put the trigger source on line. I wouldn't bother with the B (delayed) sweep until I get A working. Nice video BTW. I did not realize the 465 had an analog power supply. I have a 475 on my bench that probably needs a little work on the sweep but is servicable. Time to download the 475 service manual and see if I can tune it up.

Yeah, this was before Tek got good at switching supplies, and the 46x/47x series was not a platform they wanted to compromise. During the same era that these were produced, Tek also built a more economical series, the 432 and 434. These were lower bandwidth, like 25 MHz, and were electrically similar to Tek's other economy scopes, the T9xx series, but used a switch-mode power supply. I always dreaded working on these because they ALWAYS had power supply problems, and were not easy to work on.

Silly question here - what's the proper configuration of the variable transformer and the isolation transformer? Line 120V - Var. Xfmr - Iso. Xfmr OR Line 120V - Iso. Xfmr - Var. Xfmr? Several years ago, I picked up ten of these Tek 465 scopes. Figured repairing them would give me something to do in my retirement years. I'm finally getting around to opening them up. It's been many years (decades) since I've done electronics work so I need some mental refreshing. Your videos are great for me.

N5KDA: Saying the 475 is identical to the 465 except for bandwidth is like saying ... I can't even think of a similar thing. Maybe it's like saying a Ford F350 is the same as an F100 except for the load capacity. The 465 and 475 used pretty much the same power supply, but almost everything else was different, due to improved specs in sweep speed and triggering in addition to bandwidth. Similar yes - their block diagrams are indeed identical - but not even close to identical otherwise. Even the CRT was fundamentally different, using a dome mesh that magnified the electron beam after deflection, which allowed the deflection to run at lower voltage swings without reducing the display size. But the tradeoff with this was that the 475 and even 475A had a very noticeably fatter beam width (and beam blooming at higher intensities, which someone else mentioned) than the 465, making precise measurements more difficult to do. I have a bunch of Tek analog scopes now, but have resisted buying a 475 because of this.

The rectifier is cracked, which will be replaced. I sure wish I could've seen more of what you were doing, but I can follow the service manual.

Very interesting video thank you. Would you be willing to offer me some advice please. As a newbie just starting to put together a workshop, I have found for sale close by three scopes and I can’t decide which one is the best choice for the money. The three models are 1) Hitachi V-525 50MHz. $100 OBO 2) Tektronix 466 100MHz. $150 OBO 3) Lecroy 9400A 175MHz. $250 OBO All look in mint condition with no bashed up cabinets and all front ends looking new with zero ware. All come with manual but no probes. I am hoping to get my ham license this year that’s why I wish to begin collecting equipment. One final question would be which brand multimeter to purchase on a budget to start with. Thank you. 73

I have a TEK465 that makes a very strange defect: there is a ripple of about 10 MHz in all power supplies. The ripple propagates in the circuits and the track is all wavy. I've done a lot of tests, but I can't understand the cause. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Really good video! Great job! I have a digital Tek TDS1002B since 2008 and I'm happy with it. Recently I run into the opportunity of buying one of these used Tek 465 for $150. Is it worth buying and having it?

Can I recommend CHIPQUIK for removal of such difficult devices, it allows you to use a low heat as the metal in the kit weakens the solder to a low temp alloy, running a blob of it across all 4 pins and the rectifier will just fall out. All the electronic suppliers stock it and you can get it direct if you wish. CHIPQUIK SMD1 NL smd removal kit has all the things you need, for smd parts , as well as large items as well. There is a great flux included SMD291, works like a charm. You need to remove all the alloy off the board before resoldering, and use IPA to clean up. (I have no connection to the company) I use it to clear through holes that will not clear easily as well. {ZL2ALW}

Buddy I have a Sencor SC-61 that has an issue where the beam is just a single beam and only about 3-4 squares wide. Thinking maybe an issue with the beam finder. Looking forward to seeing the video of this scope when you do it.

Sorry I didn't see your reply until now. I did get the issue fixed. It seemed to be a loose connection with one of the molex connectors on the horizontal board. Also I did find a schematic for it so if you have need of one I can send you a copy by Dropbox.com

I have a 466 I just picked up for $40.00, (1st scope). Everything seems to work fine, plus it came with a brand new leads set, and a brand new probe. The only problems I can find are the Intensity adjust is completely frozen, and the Focus adjust is nearly frozen. Since the Scale Illumination adjustment looks to be an identical knob, I assume the Inten and Focus should move as easily. Any tips on how to get these adjustments freed up? Thanks...

The problem is where the shaft touches the outer bushing nut. Corrosion has built up and froze the shaft. I have in the past disassembled the control and clean it up. Takes a bit of time and patience to do.

Beautiful scope, my family all chipped in and got me a Rigol 1054z ot says max voltage 300 volts. Is that dc or ac and is that rating with 1 to 10 probes or 1 to 1 probes? I wrote rigol several times with not 1 reply. Could you answer that for me. Iam scared to death of frying it. Any info would be helpful thanks in advance.

The specs say "Analog Channel: CAT I 300 Vrms, CAT II 100 Vrms, Transient Overvoltage 1000 Vpk" Looks like using it on mains with a 1:1 probe is not recommended (except in Japan), but moderate power tube gear should work OK. Just make sure that what you're probing *always, always is galvanically isolated from mains*, employing an isolation xfmr when needed (also see EEVBlog "How not to fry your scope"). Maximum input voltage with a 10:1 probe would be = min(probe rating, scope rating * 10). So if you had a 10:1 probe rated at 1 kV DC you wouldn't have gained much, though I'd still prefer using one as it gives better bandwidth and I don't fancy having hundreds of volts on my scope inputs.

Accidentally deleted the first comment... sorry. If you were to recommend a scope to a young college student working on his electronics technology degree, what would you suggest? I am OK with old or used gear, as long as it has all the features to cover as much general tasks as possible. Would the Tektronix 465 be a good general scope for modern and vintage circuits?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 6 жыл бұрын
The scope of my choice would be the Rigol DS1054Z or the Siglent SDS1102. If used I would be looking for something like the Tektronix 2235 since they can be had cheap. There will be a lot of opinions on this however. And yes the 465 would also be a great scope for this.

To me the biggest surprise was the 200+ volts on the +5 v bus, but you just skipped right over that in troubleshooting. The question should have been, with 9vac on the 5v bridge, where is the 200 volts coming from?

taking a bit of a risk to inject an external 5V supply when not knowing if there is a short on the internal 5V supply!!.....got away with it this time though....still, not something I would recommend to do!

No risk at all. That is why you use a current limiting power supply. If anything is wrong the volt/amp goes to zero instantly.
