Hello Buddy wow can I relate to that repair. Around 30yrs ago I worked for Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Ltd (AWA) here in Sydney Australia. At that time I had the pleasure of working on Tektronix Scopes for about a year or so. I specifically remember working on a 465 that had landed face first on the floor of an Australian Navy ship. As we had the contract it was to be rebuilt as cost was not an issue. The time base knob had been pushed back into the front panel destroying the cam switch and all of those contacts you found in your repair. That was just one of the problems, however Tektronix were just down the street so all parts needed were ordered and I repaired and calibrated that scope. I did not see the final bill for the repair but I do know it gave me something to work on that I have never forgotten. All the best with your restoration as Tektronix had a policy of having chips and other parts manufactured with their own part numbers marked on them. Generic parts were a no no :) Also some parts were marked SOT on circuit diagrams just to keep you on your toes. It was common to spend a week solid on one repair and calibration. That sure tests your skills and ability. Cheers from down under.

Well done as always Buddy. Couldn't agree more about replacing those tantalum caps. They are right up there with those SMD electrolytic cans for causing a lot of problems. I love it when they explode off the board and now you have a devil of a time finding where they came from. 73 Doug.

This scope had so many problems and the guy who gave it to you was not a bad actor and knew his business but I think he did not want to stay up several times to 2:00 am fixing and fabricating. All those broken solder joints so this scope has not run for 20 years but is now golden thanks to our Buddy. The guy with diligence and wit to keep fighting for a misbehaving unit

Thanks for this video Buddy. I bought a Tektronix 475A with multiple issues a couple weeks ago and this video has been very helpful. Internally the 475A is still very similar to the 465 as far as I can tell, so there was a lot of useful information in here for me. First, mine also had no sweep, just a dot on the screen. Second, channel one would not respond to any input but channel two showed some deflection. Third, the main timebase knob seemed to work and would click as you turned it, but if you pulled it out for the delayed sweep it would just free spin, no clicks or detents. Like it was stripped out. Fourth, I went inside of the scope to check rails and the -15v rail was fluctuating between -22v and -25v. After a few minutes this caused one of the 25v rated tantalums on the -15v rail to randomly explode while I was looking inside - scared the hell out of me. I knew tantalums were very strict on their max voltage limits but wow, the rail must have gone over -25v for a few seconds or something. All the other rails seemed within spec. Within a week, I have fixed all of these major issues thanks to videos like yours and I'm working on the smaller ones now. I will tell you this, taking apart that entire timebase section, repairing it, and then putting it back together correctly was a serious project!

Interesting to watch and learn from your systematic troubleshooting methods. I had a similar problem(s) with a Tektronix 7403N I had been given: trouble was, I am a mechanical engineer not electrical and was not certain quite where to start at first. I am sure now that I changed out quite a few parts that I need not have but hey-ho! It was a a learning experience which is what I hoped it would be but I almost gave up on it. The main problem turned out to be in the high voltage (+12kV, -3kV) supply which also caused a 'wet' tantalum cap on the +15V rail to 'pop' and short-out a regulator transistor. I managed to find a replacement HVPS for in Sweden of all places, though I do intend to dig out the potting compound on the PDA multiplier at some point, to replace the diodes and caps so I have a spare!! Firstly, as I had no HV probe I had to make up a voltage divider probe for my multimeter to check it out, rubber gloves on, of course. All in all, quite an experience and not a single shock. :-)

Thanks Graham, and that was an interesting fault you had. That is the problem with tants. they fail short. Many problems are mostly caused by a single fault, in your case the HV. Glad you made it through without a shock. Thanks for sharing

Great video Ty. I used to love working on those. So many with noisy attenuators, which we used to wash (literally) and never had any back. Must have done hundreds in the late 70's early 80's. Tektronix is beautiful equipment to work on.

Tony Griffiths. Hi Tony...just bought a Tektronix 465B and it seems to have a problem in the Horizontal. The Beam is too short of the CRT on both the Left and Right...any ideas?

The 465B had the 475 attenuator board on it and gave 120Mhz bandwidth if I remember correctly. I left the bench in 1982, so memories are somewhat limited. Could be blanking, maybe the gain of a semiconductor in the horizontal amplifier. Good luck in your fault finding.

Nice repair, that sure was a tough one. I picked up two Tektronix 465 scopes, one of them is a 465B. I have big problems with the inputs on the 465 so I am working on the 465B, that scope seems to work okay on channel ! but channel B is dead, I think it is Q1875 because 2 of the leads were broke off. I can't find it in the parts list but the number on the transistor is M15 and under that number is 0198 on the B channel vert board. It must be a Tektronix part number, Tektronix is noted for using propriety parts.

I just purchased a Tek 485 for $50 on eBay. Has traces so we’ll see when she shows up. All the lights on the panel seemed to be on in the photos. Said for parts or repair, usually they don’t have any powered up photos when they describe the item like that. I hope she works, a 350mhz scope will be a nice addition to my bench. All others were $150+ for parts or repair. Maybe I got lucky. If I can’t figure it I know who to ask 😀. I have a Rigol 1054z and an old Elenco 25mhz analog scope in great shape but always wanted a Tek 400 series. Thanks for all your great videos. I’m still a relative greenhorn in the electronics game, pretty good at tube amps and radios so this will be a challenge. Guys like you give me something to shoot for.

Recently I bought a used 466, very similar to your 465 (466 with storage). Yes, tantalum caps are notorious, they are little time bombs. Maybe I will replace them. My 466 had a couple of broken shaft joints, which are unobtainable. I was able to glue them up with super glue. Unfortunately the switches and pots are very hard to get access to for cleaning. Tektronics did not want them to be cleaned. Now my 466 works fine. I guess it has not a lot of miles on the counter. I watched your video for future reference. Thanks for sharing. Good job. BTW, the original feet of my 466 have 3 slots. The material has deteriorated, so the feet are broken. I'll try to find replacements.

I know you comment is now 3 years old but I have an option of buying a 466M it’s an ex Canadian military scope (Don’t know if they are built differently for the military and I assume that’s what the M stands for) but it’s in very clean condition. Still dithering between that or an Hitachi V-525 50MHz or a Lecory 9400A. As a newbie wanting to put together a shop so I can begin tinkering with electronics.

Hi Buddy, I bought two 465s as non-workers. One I got working, the other had suffered a catastophic failure in and around the beam finder circuit. This one has a Vertical Output board in that is in neither of the manuals (early/late) and as the components are so burned up I can't ID them or refer them back to any circuit diagram. Bummer! Good work on your 465, really enjoyable videos.

I finally got back to working on my 465 and got the bent BNC replaced with a proper 10X sensing connector. I found that my horizontal position, and my scale illumination pots were dirty. At 21:24 instead of drilling a hole I took the pot apart and there was a small gap around the shaft area that I was able to spray some deoxit into. now I need to go through the rest of the scope and see what other problems it might have then try to get it calibrated. But before doing that I need to either find or make a shield for the HV area since mine was missing when I got it. I really don't want to find out what 7KV feels like any time soon.

subscribed. I thoroughly enjoyed your troubleshooting video for two reasons. Firstly, because of the excellent analysis and solution for each issue, including emphasizing starting at the power supply, and also because I have two working Tek scopes of this generation, a 464, and a 475a. You talked about having a tube type scope you had worked on, and I was wondering if it was also a Tek scope, hopefully of the 545b era. The reason I am asking, is that I have a Lavoie 265a scope that is the functional equivalent of the 545, that has failed with power supply issues, that I wish to get running again. The reason I like the Lavoie, is that I have a couple of plugins, the CA comparator, and the diode checker plugins, that were really great troubleshooting tools. I have lots of old test gear, and will be watching a lot more of your videos.

I also had some scratchy pots but I didn't take them out or drill any holes, all I did was loosen the small screws and pull them apart slightly so I could spray in some contact cleaner.

Once again you do excellent work! I remember the 465 from college and always wanted one with the digital voltmeter on top. BTW, on my 475, I though my power light was bad but that light was actually a LOW LINE indicator to verify you had the voltage selector correct. I wonder if it's something similar on the 465?

I should check mine (on the 475) also since it may not work and I would never know since it only comes on if the line voltage is low. If I open it I will probably want to replace some caps and fix the scratchy graticule illumination, and address the trace fade on the left side at higher sweep speeds.

I dragged my trusty old 465 out of a corner of my shop and powered her up. It's working, but a lot of dirty pots and switches. I used Deoxit as well, and I think I may have made a mistake by using it on this old girl. Some of the switches didn't like it, particularly the volts/div cams. The Deoxit seemed to create more friction than it had before. The worst thing is, now the channel 2 AC/GND/DC slide switch has lost its detents, it slides back and forth without "clicking", and I think it's really stuck in the AC position.

I chose IPA due to it being a sealed control. If it would had been a "serviceable" control then DeOxit.

Can you show us the full alignment procedures of the 465 scope? The 465 and 465B scopes were influential powerhouses for decades, the proper procedures need to be saved for posterity!

While separating the trigger board from the main board how do you detach the white block pin connectors that are soldered to each board. Do they just clip apart?

They are a type of edge connector, you just pull the board out from them and it will expose the pins.

Incredible videos sir, and what a MASSIVE undertaking. I’m now subscribed to your channel. Perhaps, you could help me. Here’s the issue, I recently acquired Vu-Data portable oscilloscope [ps910b]: it looks great and it is very clean, inside and out. It seems to do well, with AC signals [I got this scope 2 weeks ago - haven't had time to play with it much yet] BUT when it comes to DC, I get the reference trace just fine, but the instant I place the probe onto, say a 1.5 volt battery, the trace which should move up vertically, instead disappears - so, I end up having to fiddle around with the +/- trigger to locate it. I do find it eventually but I don't think this is normal. I should point out, that I’m just an electronic enthusiast [without any formal training] and this is my first o-scope. It’s a small single channel scope, inexpensive, clean and it came with its manual [which is really more of a technical service manual - not a user-friendly instruction manual, and somewhat over my head]. I’ve fixed a few CRT TVs, few old radios, fans, etc, but nothing as complex as a scope. I don’t want to damage it accidentally. Frankly, I couldn’t even tell you if it’s a vertical control issue or an horizontal one... Please let me know what you think. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly, in advance.

At 20:59 you are taking the holdoff pot and switch apart. You missed an opportunity to lubricate the pot and switch in place. Using an artist's brush paint some Caig F5 pot lubricant onto the brown plastic areas. The lube will soak through the cracks into the pot and swich by capillary action. Do that first before taking stuff apart. You will be surprised at how well that works.

As we know zero is the acceptable limit. However in real life that is not the case. I cannot remember off the top of my head for this scope but 100mv should be ok.

That does not sound good. I would start by checking diodes and capacitors around the high voltage circuit. I know the capacitors are failing due to age of these units. So a complete recap would be in order.

The Radio Shop The Plot thickens! I got a 465B a few weeks ago for $75...the Traces are too Short. A couple weeks later I found a 465 and 466 in a Junk Shop...got those for $20 Bucks each. The 465 is the one with High Voltage Arcing. The 466 is all White on Half the Screen. Then the other day I got another 465 off the Internet for $15! I've wanted a Scope my whole life...now in matter of weeks I've got 4 !?!?

You could polish up your understanding of transistor and op amp theory. When the regulator is IN REGULATION the + and - inputs on the op amp will be the same voltage. Get back to your books. Glad you are saving another precious 465.
