Tom back (bac) were brass alloy high copper content with 5- 20% zinc. Generally. Love the metal detector and under water content you do also anything basically involves the rivers. Cheers mate

Most of those .22 casings were part of long rifle rounds as you suggest, Beau, but "back in the day" there were lesser used .22 rounds that were "longs" with that length of casing but a shorter bullet similar to .22 short rounds. The .22 long bullets had a lower ballistic coefficient/weight than the .22 long rifle bullets, so the shorter "long" bullets were more prone to deviation from wind and other factors. The only advantage of the "long" rounds may have been that they have been slightly less expensive in the early 1900s.

This is the most beautiful soil I think I’ve ever seen, Beau. We have stink-horn mushrooms down here in the Coastal Plain. You have to dig it up along with the gelatinous goo to get rid of it and in a plastic bag as well into the trash can too. The reason it’s covered with ants and flies is because this is how it spreads its spores. The smell of death draws the ants and flies, then they do the work of spreading in it through-out your yard. So get rid of them as soon as you smell them. Sorry about the bump on the back of your head but you are one hard-headed and driven man. Your wife will fix you up good. Great finds as usual. ☺️
