It will be alot easier for parts for that bike vs anything she purchases new. Most of the time she has parts shipped to her so this garage full of parts is a instant back up that would be shipped out on same day for her. It's amazing how smooth the engine sounds. It's a real treat to sound it... I don't know if it was just my idea, but when you ride at speed with the helmet visor open, I think a bit of wind noise got into the recording (and I'm not entirely sure if it disappears completely when you close it at minute 4:11). I imagine the noise can increase with increasing speed or with strong or crosswinds. A good time to check these kinds of details with the sound. The bike is really great. Full of details to ensure its reliability, comfort and durability on the road. With each video, one falls in love with it more and more. It's really interesting seeing some of the comments pointing out the "flaws" with this bike. It's too heavy and tall for her, she won't find parts, etc. She's been planning this for months, I think with her experience it's safe to say she's an expert at rtw travel on a motorcycle. Do you think these are things she hasn't already thought of and planned around? It's not her first time and it's not her first motorcycle. More importantly, when it comes to bike choice it's certainly important to factor in logic and reason. But I'd argue it's equally if not more important to just pick a bike that you want to ride. Pick a bike that you turn around and look at every single time you walk away from it. If that bike happens to also be the most practical bike then great, but if not, that's also great. You should be on the bike that makes you want to ride.
@groovychic2 ай бұрын
exactly! and I think this bike was chosen for specific reasons - one of which was the ease of working on it - like less parts to break, less electronic components, etc. and I bet Noraly is there during the build to learn how to do much of the work herself.
@willsta212 ай бұрын
The flaws aren’t pointed at her mate just constructive criticism? Headlight needs improved, she’ll need some way to deflect the wind off her body and her fanny is going to hurt like hell at that height after a days ride. I’ve done RTW and Dakar it’s the simplest things that can change your ride from heaven to hell, I’m sure she knows this w x EDIT: last point 100% agree always come back with more pics of my bike than where Iam 😂
@Michael_Shay2 ай бұрын
@willsta21 I'm not saying they're pointed at her. All I'm saying is that do you think they didn't think about these things? Like the headlight is a great example, do you think they rode the bike at least once at night? They literally talk about swapping the headlight housing in this video, they'll probably put a brighter bulb in next. Like these are pretty surface level issues for something that's had months of planning. It's pretty reasonable to infer that these issues are gonna be taken care of, especially when you're watching an in-progress build series.
@Michael_Shay2 ай бұрын
@vonwaffen It seems you don't realize that the bike mechanic has a TON of parts on hand. Do you think it's reasonable to infer that they'll be provided direct support in terms of parts so that any part she needs can be shipped same or next day? Do you think some random Honda warehouse could provide the same level of service? The great thing about old bikes is you can jerry rig things when you need to. Anything she can't do, she'll find somebody who can help, just like she did on the 300l. And in even simpler terms, if she's been planning this for 6 months, do you think she hasn't thought about parts availability? Really? It's pretty clear that the reason why she's working with this group of guys is because they know everything about these bikes and they have multiples of every part on hand. Some random place in Africa won't have the parts for this bike on hand. The same place also won't have the parts for a DR650 on hand. You're not gonna get same or next day shipping and one on one help from a DR650 expert from whatever the nearest Suzuki warehouse is. ¿comprende?

There is no 'perfect bike' for Noraly's needs. The latest technology would make the bike too hard to repair or service in some of the remote locations she travels to. This bike is CUSTOM tailored to meet her varied requirements. It has to do everything well while being as simple as possible to maintain. Fuel injection? Pump goes out, you're stuck. More power? Higher compression ratio means high octane fuel that may not be available. Seat height and weight are priorities she is addressing and I'm willing to bet is better than any modern equivalents that are available due to it's being custom. I’m of an age that has allowed me to have gained some life experience with both modified vs non modified machines, I’m also old enough to have experienced the difference between carbureted and fuel injected vehicles and motorcycles. That experience has taught me the following that I live by. Special mods are to be avoided whenever possible, they make inevitable repairs difficult and breakdowns unpredictable. Carburetors are ok, but they require maintenance and can be easily compromised by extremes in heat, cold, altitude, and questionable fuel supplies, modified carburetor come with increased reliability issues in all of these areas. Fuel injected systems can have all of the same problems, good design and support for either system is essential. Given your travel plans, the type of long term difficult distances you ride on/through bike design, endurance reliability reputation, and availability of repair parts would be top of my criteria list. That being said only time and distance will tell the story.

Carburetor important tips., never ignore these. 1. Always have a "paper"(not mesh, they won't catch the sticky powdery dust) fuel line filter in the fuel line that connects to the carburetor. (micro particles are a major issue with the carb fuel needle valve getting stuck). This simple fuel line filter solves this issue completely. Note the fuel filter in the tank is not enough, has to be paper fuel line filter. You have to avoid this for if it gets sticky you will need to reopen the carb to clean it and it will happen again. So this is not optional. 2. unlike Fuel injector, carb is sensitive to bike position, especially when parked. The carb needle may open up if parked slanted overflowing the fuel. So when parked "ALWAYS" turn off the fuel tap. Else you will comeback to find your fuel slowly overflowed to empty. Keep these in mind.. carb has zero maintenance worry free setup.

After a lifetime of crappy motorcycle lighting I tried an LED headlight and will never go back, it's an absolute game changer having useful amounts of light while riding. Also be weary of parts that have sat on the shelf for extended periods that have lubricants in them, grease and oil, plastic and rubber do go bad with age. Also would recommend putting a modern one piece switch for your starter and ignition so you don't have to take your hands off the bars to start it.

Fuel injection is great ... prompt start every time, stable idling, no altitude sickness ...as long as everything related to it works. I was stranded once because - as it turned out later by the dealer! - a simple Oring on the fuel pump in the tank was leaking. The bike was 10 year old only.....

Love the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) approach, and the ways in which these talented mechanics are tailoring the bike to her unique needs. How many of us get to design a custom bike from the ground up? And how many of us have needs that need to be so precisely met as Noraly, who dares to go with everywhere it the world where she can get with a bike and her cameras, to bring us along for an experience that nobody else on earth can offer.

Well, I get that everyone is in love with this woman. Jupiter's Travels, Ted Simon 1973 is known to have been one of the first to "travel the world" on a motorcycle, In 50 years since then, and serious developments in motorcycle design and reliability, I would guess there have been several thousand riders, woman and men, who have "travelled the world" on a motorcycle, in one way...or another.....I like this series...but you suggest "nobody else" can offer it....I disagree. Norally herself has inspired many women...and men....of course because she has a delightful personality....but lets not forget that in these journeys she has hurt herself at least 3 times....and appears to have a great deal of luck. I draw your attention to the opening lines of this video...she says in there somewhere...."I will just go for it". That particular moment she was crossing a washed out road on a mountainside. It was in the very early videos in India on her first bike....That water "could" have taken her over the cliff.....Is that the experience that nobody else can offer you are referring too? She is a mix of beginner and expert, careful and fool hardy, Its a fascinating chapter we are about to witness, a great bike choice, her mechanic pit crew in the next video, teaching her about mechanics...finally,....will be a good one....Just saying...many, many riders have done this, are doing this, as we speak. Some are on You Tube, but not all of them. Personally, I think all the filming and commentary is a distraction while riding....I see that problem a lot these days...lack of focus....

The Beautiful Blue Bike - Frankie got so much love and attention, it would make anyone envious. The bike has turned out to be an incredible piece of innovation and gorgeous at the same time. You gonna rock Noraly !! But we wonder where it's gonna be. I think it would have to be according to the weather which makes it somewhere south of the equator or around it. It's gonna be exciting just to find out where you are heading to Itchy boots , literally. And another exciting part of the vlog was learning about the English translation of KEERPUNT and its subsequent availability as FREE RIDE. Can't wait to buy one and read it in one go. All this sums up into an awesome, wholesome chapter in our lives. Bless you Noraly, you are doing great. Your passion Rocks !!!

Dear Noraly, Happy to see you on wheels again. As a motorcycle enthusiast and working on my bikes by myself for years, I would like to tell newer bikes with modern technology aren't that bad. They might break more frequently than older bikes (due to many components), but if you know your bike well, you know how to find the error or even start bypassing if some sensor or actuator is broken. I remember how you fix your radiator fan on your Honda by giving a direct connection likewise you can work on them until expert help is available. You guys might build this Tenere from scratch but it is still having fundamental issues such as poor performance of carburetors in higher altitudes, possibly flooding the engine, and many more, That's why manufacturers and designers have invented new technologies over the years, and implemented them. Anyway, I'm wishing you good luck & hope you have a safe journey. Looking forward to see a adventurous series!!!

It's a beautiful bike. Having been brought up on old carbureted motorcycles in the 1980s, I thought I'd love newer technology like fuel injection and not having to worry about the little things like choking a bike, fuel cutoff valves, etc. but I realize I miss the ritual of it all because it made me and my bike more like friends instead of the bike just being a tool that mostly took care of itself.
@jasonzerbini23752 ай бұрын
Taking this a step further I ride a 1948 Indian Chief with tank shift and foot clutch. Indeed there are rituals when starting and riding it you feel much more as one with the bike. Its been incredibly reliable for 76 year old technology going many thousands of miles with little more than general maintenance. Peace!

Same could be said for the generation of engines before that. My dad used to remove, disassemble, re-ring a V8, reassemble and reinstall IN THE SAME WEEKEND...in the BACKYARD, so they could take it to work on Monday. Did it a dozen times in the 1950's.

I saw further downstream that Noraly had responded to one of us men who made a negative comment about the bike. I was happy to see that Noraly cared enough to respond. It reminded me that we all like to express ourselves but all over the world, the universal truth is that Men and Women are different. I can just picture on her next adventure to who knows where doing who knows what. But she's dangling over a 300 meter ravine with a raging river at the bottom, hanging on to Frankie with one hand while holding on to a swinging rope bridge with the other. You women are going to comment along the lines of "be careful, glad you're alright." I guarantee you that men will watch the exact same video and one of us will comment "make sure you turn off that fuel line, you don't want the carburetor to flood!" Noraly we're both saying the same thing but in our own different ways; we all love you. 😎

Really enjoy your videos, your enthusiasm is so infectious and inspirational. 🙂👍👍👍In my opinion the Tenere, XT and TT Yamaha single cylinder Thumper engines of the 1980's were among the most reliable and robust Motorcycle engines ever produced. Witness how many of these Yamaha engines are still running today around the world. The only worthy rival was the Honda 500 XR and XLS Thumper engine which is also a legend. Isn't it amazing how the Motorcycle manufacturers always manage to discontinue or destroy a good product over time. I bought a Honda 500 XLS in 1980 and only sold it in 2014 and I'm still regretting selling it.Two of my close friends had Yamah XT's in the 1980's and one of them still rides a 1985 Tenere today. Cheers Paul

Quiz them on how Frankie will start after being laid on its side, some carby bikes fire up easily straight away others require a specific technique.
