Its really very encouraging to see the littlest "runt" of the litter get plenty of food for himself/herself. Theres nothing worse than seeing the bigger chicks get well fed while the smaller chicks barely get any scraps! I mean just look at them & how they've developed and grown. I mean the size difference is astounding really! Owls, both the mamas and the daddies, are excellent parents! Very impressive to say the least! Thank you for sharing your wonderful video!!!

The "runt" was the last one born and should end up being as big as its siblings when ready to fledge.
@gunnermuzzammil4 жыл бұрын
It is not a runt, eggs are not hatched the same day, usually there is gap of 2 days between each egg laid, so they don't all hatch at the same time, there can be difference of 10-12 days for the 1st hatching to the last, ergo size differences

I love being able to see any kind of bird, even on my phone. I moved from my parents house into an apartment after they both died, and had to leave the birds behind. There were pretty much what kept me going for 4 years after losing my entire family. These owls are beautiful and I thank everyone on KZbin for posting these incredible videos. You must have the patience of Job and have to devote much of your time so that we can see! And to my fellow bird lovers, I love reading your comments. Not only are some of them funny, but I learn allot from you as well. 🐦💜

What a caring Mom!! Nothing like the high strung storks that actually pick up smaller young ones and drop them over edge of nest while others watch...couldnt believe my eyes, . This Owl made sure the littlest got more than enough and other babies very polite while he ate. He could barely open his eyes once he finished. Cant believe it went down!! 5* parenting for sure!!!
@subzero35326 жыл бұрын
Yes, You're correct! i see that videos too! Stork, eagles and other carnivorous birds are not same this Owl Families. There are no sibling rivalries. maybe sometimes the Owlets will fight for the foods from their parents mouths, but not to the point that they will bite or kick their weaker siblings out of the nest.
@st73236 жыл бұрын

im sorry to tell u this but sometimes the “owlet” from the last clutch may eat their just hatched siblings from new clutch if the owlet is still living with the parents. I watched that video and my heart broke in pieces to see it. The father couldn’t find much food coz it was raining for 3 days and when he came back with food to give the mother, the adolescent owlet just snatched away the food from the mother and gulped it down and then when she knew she was still so hungry she just snatched one of the baby killed it in front of mom and flew away with it. It was really shocking. The mother chased her out the next time she came back tho! Good for her!

Of all the raptors I've watched (bald eagles, ospreys, peregrine falcons and owls), the owls and peregrine falcons do not display sibling rivalry. They may push a little or try to get closer to the parent, but they do not do the bonking (using beaks to peck at sibling).

One of THE most amazing videos on KZbin. It's like they all knew that it was Half-Pints turn to eat. . .and eat he did! Kudos to the mother for supervising the operation and a giant high-five to Half-Pint for somehow getting the rodent down the hatch. Truly a herculean feat, and far more impressive than Joey "Jaws" Chestnut in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

At this age, each is fed one at a time as Dad can only get a vole one at a time. When they were younger and could not swallow the whole vole, the mother would tear it into pieces for them. What is interesting about owls I have watched, these with Long Eared and Great Horn owls, the little ones do not fight for food. Whoever gets the prey from the parent eats it.

I know this comment is old, but I have an answer from "Owls of the World" by Claus König and Friedhelm Weick. The fragment says about the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) but I guess it is can be similar with the Great Grey Owl: "After three weeks the chicks start to feed themselves and begin to swallow smaller items whole, although accidents occasionally happen when the prey is too large and gets stuck in the nestling’s throat. We found a dead nestling with a whole Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus in its gape."
