Doing a bit of research on this, Quirky looks to be an 'ideas company' taking submissions and working with a select few to turn said ideas into products. Looking at what I assume was the prototype or a 3d build of a first draft, the locking mechanism looked more complex than this. Having multiple levels of hills and valleys kinda like a key along the full width of the lock. I guess that was changed to better sell the 'portability' of the lock for a small bit of metal that could be pulled out and tucked away. As for Mornigsave and the price of the lock; they seem to sell a lot of Quirky products. The first listing said it was sold out, but they also showed a second listing that was the same exact thing for a 2-pack of the locks for... $80. But! They're on sale, and you can get your very own 2-pack for $10. Pretty sure that 'sale' is to give a sense of false urgency considering that the lock itself doesn't look like it'd cost a whole lot to produce.

If you carried around a "Master Key" for every niche lock with a simple bypass you'd have way more keys than you could carry. on the other hand if a probe will open 50% or more of them almost as fast you may as well just carry the probe. What are the chances of finding this particular lock in the wild vs some other lock that can be bypassed? This lock is basically security through obscurity. Chances are a person who wanted to pick it would never have seen it and would need a min or two to figure it out. Then again most thieves would just break it off as I cant imagine that would hold up to any brute force attack for longer than it took to get the tool of choice into position.

The warding could have been made much more effective if the lock had to be squeezed in order for the key to actuate the mechanism, and squeezing the lock would push warding through holes in the key. If the possible ward placements overlapped, punching away enough of the key to dodge all possible warding would leave the active end of the key detached from the bow.

High thought: Lock that works by using a Vs pin array and Gnd pin on the body and make the key an embedded monolithic zener dode network and with precision multipoint uF / mA delta instruments... It would be diabolic... Or a gradient biased doping. Good luck on those tolerances ;) You could maybe measure them simply if the contact grid was of a small dimension...But theoretically you'd still have to take many measurements. What, like, !(dimension^3) permutations, i may be botching that? But however many permutations, depending on design you would need to measure a large and arbitrarily(to technical/financial limits) granular range for your arbitrarily many point measurements... Just modelled a mock up version in ltspice, works as intended, key and receiver...would totally work, probably already some patents out there it's so simple.gotta check.
