I bought this bottle a few months ago and it is going to be the oldest wine I have ever tasted. The bottle wasn’t cheap - it cost me 1,000 Euros - and even though this is an insane price for a bottle of alcoholic liquid it is unlikely that I will be able to find anything that old for less money…
This wine was made 100 years before the second world war ENDED in a world without cars, phones, and Hamburgers.
Many wines can age a bit, are few that can last for a long time but the wines that can last for centuries can be counted on one hand…
One of them is Madeira. Madeira is an island off the coast of North Africa. It belongs to Portugal but it is closer to Marocco. The island is famous for fortified wines. The story goes as follows: The Island became a hub for sea travel and sailors filled up their ships with wine that was fortified by adding spirit to make it more stable.
After a while sailors noticed that the wine tasted better after being exposed to the heat of the tropics and wines that returned from sea journeys were in higher demand than the wines that did not leave the island.
Today Madeira is either stored in warm rooms on the island or is heated in the Estufagem process to create a similar effect.
Wines are made by arresting the fermentation with 95% strength grape spirit to produce a wine with an alcoholic strength of around 20%.
Because of the acidity and sugar from the grapes, the high alcohol level, and the heat treatment these wines become indestructible.
Their ability to withstand long journey times turned it into the beverage of choice of the high society in America, during times when there was no wine production in the not yet formed USA.
Congress celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence with Madeira, and Thomas Jefferson ordered the equivalent of 3,500 bottles during his first three years in the White House.
However, Madeira struggled in the second half of the 19th century and the whole 20th century as the wine industry was heavily impacted by Phylloxera - a grape louse that destroyed the vineyards - and the Prohibition in the US.
After phylloxera devasted many of Madeira’s best vineyards at the end of the 19th century, much of the island’s wine was made from American hybrids or the variety Negramoll - which is not considered high quality.
But luckily this wine was made in the good old days during the heydays of the Madeira story.

Hello Konstantin, I am Madeiran by blood, 2nd generation of a migrant family. I stumbled across your video purely by accient. Thank you so much for making this video. When you started describing the tastes of the wine, specifically the banana, and the sugar cane syrup, the stories that my grandfather used to tell me about his father making wine hit me like a truck. My great grand father lived on the cliff sides in Madeira, he had a banana plantation, sugarcane farm and a small vineyard. The sugarcane was turned into treacle, which is used to make a traditional cake called bolo de mel. I have no doubtthat his wine would have tasted similiar to this one. We have old video of him in his late ninties laughing, drinking and sharing his wine with our family amidst the banana trees. These memories came flooding vack immediatly when you began describing the wine, which I never expected. So thank you.

Hi Konstantin, I have just discovered your channel and I really enjoy your content. This incredible tasting here must have been absolutely magical. The oldest wine I have ever tasted was a 1959 Mouton. This has left a picture of a million colors in my head that I can still almost see perfectly. I used to organise monthly wine tastings for work colleagues and friends for many years. On one memorable occasion about 30 years ago we had an 1868 (I think) Madeira, Malmsey. It was one of the most memorable wine experiences of my life. Strangely, my neighbour at the tasting didn't like it and gave me his allocation for which I was profoundly grateful.

I’m probably the youngest fortified wine enthusiast in Australia at 27… Nobody in Australia under the age of 60 drinks fortified wine and it’s difficult to get great quality here. But I’ve loved all sorts of fortified wines ever since first White Port in Mudgee almost a decade ago. I love the complexity and boldness that can be packed into a fortified wine. I also love the history of wine, and am considering becoming a sommelier one day. I would love nothing more than to try this incredible Madeira.

The oldest wine I tasted was an homemade Italian Vinsanto made in 1947. Tasted it in 2014. Can't find the correct words to describe it perfectly, one of the best experiences of my whole life.

Well, as a former history student whose brother is still running the old family business that started as a furrier in 1836 it would certainly be amazing to taste a wine from that time, right before the 1848 revolution. I managed to keep one bottle of a wine I made in 1991, 'Sweet Melon Wine'. It was ridiculously sweet in the beginning, but after 20 years it became very rich and caramel like. There were still hints of the fruity origin. I was surprised, but after watching your channel I have better expectations of older wines. That 177 year old wine looks and sounds like it is amazing.

Konstantin, because when I started watching your videos I understood that wine is a living structure, which changes over time and many factors such as light, temperature, storage, which makes tasting a wine a unique experience in each wine we opened!

I quit drinking alcohol 16 years ago, but always missed learning about wine. Thanks to channels like yours (and a spittoon!!) I’ve re-engaged with the world of fine wines. My friends usually ask if I feel like I waste of fine wine if I spit it out; I suggest engaging each new bottle completely lucid is the *most* respectful way to do so. Absolutely loved seeing this video because I recently inherited a bottle of 1825 S Madeira along with a few other vintage ports. I knew a little about the ports but had no idea what the bottle that simply had only “1825 S” on it was. I never imagine it was the actual year until I did some research on it. It is coming up on its 200th birthday. Definitely a prized possession at our house!

Hello Konstantin. I started my wine journey in the late 80's. I'm 55 now and old Madeira is probably my favourite wine of all. I've had several bottles of the 1845 solera over the years and have a couple remaining - the main reason being I found somewhere in the early 90's selling it at £40 a bottle! I've had other C19th madeira's in the past and still own several. Oldest vintage I have is a bottle of 1827 Quinta do Serrado Bual. Oldest solera I have is Blandy 1808 Malmsey - the base wine for that apparently is from the Faja dos Padres where the best Malmsey (Malvazia Candida) came from. I've bought a lot less during the past few years as its now getting more expensive, although in relative terms it is still a bargain compared to Bordeaux/Burgundy etc. Cheers.

I had my first aged wine this year. I was a 1992 Ridge Lytton Springs. Drinking it was a life-changing experience. It was probably one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. Based on that experience, I can't even imagine what a 177 year old wine would taste like. What a treat that would be!

Just amazing and really appreciate what you have done here! 177 years is a really long time and I cannot fathom what is was like to live in that era. Only something like this is able to allow us to enter the time machine to catch a "glimpse" what what life was like back then. Me and my friends got more and more into this "wine-game" over the last couple of years. However the only old wine we've tasted so far is a bottle of german Schwarzriesling from 1982. I would love to try such an old wine and share it with my wine-loving friends. Thanks for your great content!

When you said the bit about how they made that wine as a way to celebrate their 100 year anniversary and now your drinking it on the internet. That’s a lot deeper than it seemed. We know more about the science of wine in 2022 than they certainly did in 1845 and yet we still marvel at the feats in wine making they were able to accomplish. Well done video sir. My mother and I got into wine after watching the film Sideways many years ago and I would love to share that bottle with her.

It's amazing when you open a bottle of history, if you can keep this as a series where you explain a bit about the wine as you did here ;) Well, since you are giving up a bit of that beautiful Madero Wine, my name is Thiago and I'd love to give it a try! Wine has always been my favorite drink until I was diagnosed with G6PD (which is a hereditary disease where certain substances cause hemolysis) and my doctor told me that I wouldn't be able to drink wine anymore... Years have passed without a single drop of wine until early this year new studies said that wine isn't dangerous for people with G6PD, so thankfully I started my hobby all over again and that's where I found your channel! That said, since I live in Brazil it's really difficult to get good wine for the value, taxes are just too high to experience good terroir... I would love to have this bit of Madero to drink with my Grandfather Paulo (the one who introduced me to wine for the first time), as a way to thank him and to celebrate my return to the wine world :)

I am not a sommelier, but I am a home cook who has an absolute fascination with extremely old, preserved foods. I have a japanese yakitori sauce that is over a year old, which I hope to keep safe to eat for decades to come. Fermented foods, preserved foods, dried foods, and alcohol especially fascinates me, that we can create food that isn't just safe to eat for many many years, but can sometimes even age well and improve over time. I'd love to try drinking something older than I think I'd ever encounter in my life.

As a wine lover (First tried it while in the Navy, and haven't looked back) who is partial to reds, especially Merlot, and Cabernet, the description of this intrigues me, especially due to it's age, as I've never had a wine more than 20yrs old, and would LOVE to experience it.

I also really liked this test, I would be interested to know how you rate it compared to the 1863 Port. Why do I want to taste it? 1. I'd like to share it with my friends and family. 2. My first job at the age of 23-24 was related to wine protection of origin, I was also on a WSET1-3 course, but life took me away from wine. After 10+ years, I now feel that I want to find it again, at least as a serious hobby, study, or even part-time job. 3. The oldest wine I drank was a 1956 Tokaji Aszú. (The harvest was just when the Soviet tanks moved in under the vineyards to suspress the revolution in Budapest.) I couldn't sleep after the tasting. So, one of my answers is personal, and the other is that it gives you a taste of history. I wish I couldn't sleep again :)

I discovered the channel a few weeks ago. So happy I did. Each episode is informative, nicely structured and easy to understand. I am based in France near Nice. I am self-tought wine amateur. I started learning about wines and wine making being fed up bying expensive and not so great bottles from the super market. I would love your feedback on the Bellet AOC (liocated on the hills of Nice) as well the wines from The Abbaye de Lérins (smal island just a mile from Cannes). I would really like to see you travelling and doing some wine tasting on the premises. And of course try out the 177 year old Madeira. Oldest wine I drank was a Château Suduiraut from my birth year 1967.
