I remember seeing a news story on TV years ago describing all the simple ways that a toddler could get into common small gun safes. One method was lifting one end of the safe a few inches and dropping it. The thing popped open. Good to see something designed with serious thought put into it. Hopefully it becomes a trend.

I own a Stealth handgun safe. It's made from 10 gauge steel with a 7 gauge lid (weighs over 22 pounds). It is based upon the Fort Knox design and uses a Simplex mechanical lock with no other way of entry. It's a great safe, but costs around $300. I certainly wouldn't mind having one of these as well. Stealth did a good job on this safe and priced it nicely.

I actually picked up one of these, I like it quite a bit. Good size and dependable. Fingerprint scanner works 9-10 times and it’s easy to try again one second later. The fingerprint reset button is covered, but I can press it through the rubber stopper, without a lot of pressure. However, I couldn’t get a wire in to press it anyway. So, pretty sound safe.

Can you try brute forcing the lid open with a screwdriver? Also forcing the key lock open with a screwdriver? I have seen on other 1/8th turn locks that you can force the cam against the release lever with enough force, due to the play in the cylinder.

Would like to see if a strong magnet could open. Or if you can pry off the electrical panel and short wires to piston.
@oasntet
@oasntet 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or the spinning magnet trick that has worked on other electronic locks. But that operation sounded a bit like a solenoid, which, if chunky enough, shielded enough and grounded enough, probably would resist the spinning magnet.
@trottx
@trottx 4 жыл бұрын
I asked the same question about a magnet and was told to re-watch the video because I clearly missed it. I have watched it 2 more times and I don't think I missed anything. . On re-watch the panel around the buttons appears to be plastic but perhaps not. Maybe the implication is there is enough metal or shielding around the area where a solenoid would be (if it uses one) that a magnetic has no effect.

@@oasntet Thanks for the reply. It was actually Bill himself that said I missed it. Perhaps he actually tried the magnet attack and either didn't record it or omitted it from the final cut and doesn't realize it. No biggie. Maybe if I drink a couple of beers and re-watch, I'll "see" it. (grin)

Wow, I'm really surprised. This is the best pistol safe I've seen recently. They are always fancy 18 gauge sheetmetal that you can get into with a prybar, or bypass with a coat hanger, or they have a crappy wafer lock that can be jiggled open in 10 seconds for a bypass. It's as if someone actually tried to make a secure pistol safe, rather than making a crappy metal box that pretends to be one.

I watched another review of a "quality" small safe box. The vedios was a couple of years old and the box was in the $60 range. I was sold, and placed my order, even though the same box is now priced near $130. I was impressed by the fact that the CA DOJ approved this handgun safe. Then I happened to check out additional KZbin reviews of my "completely researched all proud of myself purchase." I came across one review that was of the very same safe that I purchased. He talked about the CA DOJ approval (I was like "Yeah! See how smart I am.") Then his video continued, and it shocked me. Apparently one of the tests to assess the reliability of these types of gun safes it to drop it from a height of about 4' onto a concrete surface. As soon as the guy did that, the safe popped open. My first thought was that a toy "Jack-in-the-box" would withstand a drop like that. It was then that I came to the conclusion "Man! I must be the dumbest SOB on Earth. I never gave that a thought of a drop test!" I immediately cancelled my order. Now, back on the hunt for a handgun safe, I have not seen any other videos, so far, that talk about the "drop test." That other gun safe was made in China. The reviewer talked about it swapping out parts on import that dramatically affected the quality of the safe's locking mechanism. I know reviewers are not going to run around and drop items like this one onto concrete surfaces, but is it realistic to think that these types of safes could fall the distance described and not pop open?

Good to see someone using a suppressed weapon for home defense. Hearing loss should not come at expense of protecting your home.

Looks nice, although I'd prefer the flange on power port be smooth, not hex.

This is a great example of how decent security doesn't need to result in an expensive product. The cost of enginerding a good solution is spread out over the entire run of the product, and they've put in a lot of work keeping the BoM reasonable but used those materials to great effect. I do wonder how expensive that slider lock is, of course, but it's good they didn't decide to skimp there.
