Not one to leave a comment, but yours is my favourite KZbin channel. Love your content. So inspirational and instructive. My tiny garden is north facing and shaded by dense trees. I am very new to gardening and despaired because of my lack of space and all the shade. You make me feel like trying and give me ideas of what to try and how to do it. Thanks so much!!

That's honestly so nice to hear, thank you, that's exactly why I started this channel! At first I felt the same way! I was told that "not much grows in the shade", but I persisted and discovered that actually many plants tagged "full sun" do quite well in the shade and you can grow just as many ornamentals and edibles in the shade as in full sun!

Dominica, Hello I'm Vera a new subscriber from Northern Ireland. My front garden faces north so I was delighted to watch you planting your Spring bulbs in containers for your balcony. I like the bulbs you chose and the very clear demonstration of your planting. Thank you for this really good video. I will try to get some bulbs tomorrow 30th November to plant for the front of my home. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Please tell me where you are gardening and what the climate is like there. We have a lot of rain here in Ireland and our garden is exposed to strong winds but the temperatures are not extreme neither too cold or too warm just temperate. I can no longer work in the garden because of mobility issues caused by stroke so I need to learn about containers. We have a big Springer spaniel dog called Barney who is playful and boisterous but he doesn't interfere with our plants or dig like some other dogs do! My brother William helps with physical things and encourages me to enjoy our outdoor space for benefits to my mental and physical health. God bless you and those you love. ❤

Aww so kind of you to say so! I actually have only one neighbor (behind the privacy screen) other apartments seem to be empty so my little garden is a very private space for now ☺️

Hi Dominica. I will be planting tulips and alliums in the next 2 weeks. Early November was warm but Temps have been dropping. I planted my pansies in mid October and they are looking beautiful. Those are some pretty ones you got there. Gonna be beautiful out there.

My tulip bulbs are still in the fridge (first time I'm tring to prechill them). I have amazing grace too and can't wait to see how yours and mines do :) Your narcissus cancan looks nice ! I didn't see this one. I still have a few alliums and narcissus to plant (went to a plant swap today, so I got a few more ^^)

Can you make a video about the logistics of getting new and discarding old soil in an apartment? Do you have a car? How to have a terrace garden without a car? Or is it realistic to have a terrace garden when we'll age? How people manage that?

This is a great topic, I'll think about it! I believe that there are ways to adapt to any situation and anyone can have a container garden! For the elderly or those with limited mobility I would recommend raised beds, or hanging planters, you can enjoy gardening without having to bend down. Buying a small platform trolley to transport plants and soil, is also a good idea, they are very handy and fold up so they don't take up much space. You can order soil and plants online and have them delivered directly to your door if you don't have a car. And then the same soil can be reused for years, just start with a good quality mix and add some compost in the spring. I have a video on reusing old soil on my channel. Hope this helps a little for now 💚

How cold does your balcony get in winter?
@17m2garden

We are in zone 8. It's a fairly mild climate, but the temperatures fluctuate a lot during winter and it dropped to -6°C this week already. The lowest temperature I have recorded here so far is -8°C.

Thanks bulbs represent hope so nice. I notice you dont use plates for you pots how does that work for watering. Your balcony look like a small garden now. 👩‍🌾🪴

Well said 🙌! Yes, I don't use them so that water can drain from the pots and my plants don't stand in saucers full of water. And because my terrace is closed - the water doesn't run to the neighbors, it goes under the floor and then directly into the gutters.

I know you don’t keep tulips, but do you keep other bulbs from year to year? If so, do you plant them this year?
@17m2garden

In the beginning, when my garden was still quite bare, I saved all my bulbs from year to year! And I would keep most of them permanently in containers (I showed in my earlier videos how I plant summer flowers or herbs on top of my bulbs in early summer). Now that my garden is older and mostly perennial, I only have a few pots for seasonal displays. So now I usually give my bulbs away in the spring after they've finished flowering so that I still have the possibility to try new things and switch things up a bit each year 🌷😊

@@17m2garden you probably heard about keukenhof, a large flower garden in Netherlands that works only couple of weeks each year. Every year they plant 7 million bulbs, and I was wondering: how do they keep them after? Until I realized that they don’t… For me this it a first year of bulbs planting and I have an intent to keep them all of course! But I understand that some day there will be so many of them that it is just not real. And I am thinking about some ethical way of recycling bulbs. May be plant them in some public areas or I don’t know… Give them a second live. Do you just throw bulbs away or give them for someone?

@marycaats I totally get it, I have a similar approach! I usually send them to my granny (she has a big garden) or plant them in someone else's garden. Worst case scenario you can compost them, but it's worth asking your local parks, gardens or charities if they'll accept bulbs. I'd be careful with planting in public places, because it can be considered vandalism in many countries, I've heard stories from a few people who have been fined for planting flowers around trees or in public areas...!
