First of all love your content. Your videos are very informative and I love to keep learning about gardening. I wanted to comment on Orange Dream. I have one six years old on a east facing bacony in Madrid. It stands two months with most days over 40 degrees. The first years was as yours, scorched leaves after summer. Now it has adapted and being well watered it goes through summer much better. Hope it helps!!

Your video inspired me a bit too much as I ended up bringing home over 300 hundred bulbs of different varieties. Lidl and Aldi just started to offer fall planting bulbs yesterday here and I just went crazy lol I live in zone 7, so I am a bit worried about whether or not Iris hollandica and Anemone blanda will survive the cold. Not worried about the rest as they are super hardy ones like Daffodils, Muscari, Tulip, Iris reticulata, Crocus, Fritillaria imperialis, Alliums (I did not realize that they are summer bloomers but oh , well, too late now! lol). I plan on trying the bulb lasagna method you showed in the other video and then some individual grouping for each pot. I am super excited about how they will all turn out next spring.

I ordered three different compact growing Hostas earlier this spring. Unfortunately, I left them in the box for almost a month and by the time I got to planting them in May, they were grown leggy inside the plastic bag they came in. So they had a terrible start. They eventually replaced the leggy growths with newer leaves, but one of them is about half dead looking now. I'll gonna see if they will come back next spring assuming that I will successfully overwinter them. I know they are very hardy so I plan on just leaving them unprotected and see what happens.

I thought I would try some Dahlias on my balcony this year and got myself three varieties, one small and two very large ones. I know I was a bit ambitious. Well, the start was very nice and promising. As the season went on, they grew big and provided the nice green backdrop I was aiming for. In early July, leafminers decided to eat my Dahlias but I could easily locate the larvae inside the leaves and just gently squash them to death while they are still inside the leaf! I really enjoyed killing them one by one. lol Surprisingly though, no other pests on any other plants. I was afraid Begonias might get spidermites (but so far in Germnay, no spidermites on my plants to my delightful surprise!!). Then, I started seeing these tiny green jumping insects on my Dahlias. At first, I would just try and catch them and kill by hand, but they were rather fast and easily escape my hand. Soon, they multiplied in numbers but still only stayed on Dahlias. I was getting super annoyed and once I found them on my other plants next to Dahlias, I put a huge black trash bag over them and took them out. I did enjoy a few flowers but they were not as good as anticipated. I guess I'll never get Dahlias again unless I move to a house with a garden. No more bugs and my Elephant ears are growing big fast filling up the open space where the Dahlias were. My current biggest challenge is to overwinter perrenials and more importantly my beautiful Hydrangeas, which will hopefully provide a nice back drop for other smaller plants I plan on trying. I see that you have some Hydrangeas so I'm gonna search and see if you have already covered that topic. You said you are in zone 8. I'm in Berlin, so zone 7 I believe.

Oh I've just watched your vlog and I'm glad you did one ! First, the view from your air bnb is perfect ! Then your holiday activities were 👌: pastries, gardens and garden centre ! Before I was envious of US garden centres but now I feel like I must add italians ones to the list 😁 Your head planter is gorgeous ! I don't know why in France it is so difficult to find nicely done faces. A big garden centre chain recently sold one where the eyes were so wrong ! (I finally found one quite pretty in a supermarket 🤷‍♀) Oh it's funny you talk about blue salvia, I have one since last year and I wanted to swap it for another colour but no one was interested. Did your husband find inspiration in that park he wanted to visit ? 😃

Beautiful flowers you have! I am growing a few Hydrangeas in the Balcony for the first time this year. I am worried about how to keep them during the winter. Do I water them at all during the winter? My winter gets freezing cold (USDA zone 7) so I'm afraid watering the pot during the winter might freeze the roots and kill them. At the same time, I don't want to dry them to death if that's what's going to happen if I stopped watering the entire winter. Please help!!
@17m2garden
@17m2garden Ай бұрын
Hi! Water them occasionally throughout the fall until the first frost. If your balcony is not covered and they get some rain or melting snow during the winter, this may be just enough moisture. But I recommend checking on them once every two weeks or so, and if you notice that the soil is very dry, it is worth giving them a splash of water (when the temperatures are above freezing). I also recommend wrapping the pots in bubble wrap to prevent the soil in the pot from freezing (you can check out my video on how to overwinter potted plants for more tips). Hope this helps, good luck!

@@17m2garden Thank you! My balcony is open but the balcony of my neighbor above me is keeping the rain and snow from reaching my plants. Imagine your balcony but with the roof over it. So only water when the temperature is above freezing. When the temperature is below freezing (most of the time my winter will be below freezing at least during January and February), should I leave the plant alone even if they are frozen dry? I guess there's no point in adding water to the frozen potting mix.
@MrWhitney4e

How much water would be necessary for deciduous plants like Hydrangeas in pot in freezing cold winter? Would they die if left bone dry? I read that watering can also freeze the roots to death. I'm a bit perplexed as this is going to be my first winter for potted plants out on the balcony and it is USDA zone 7 here.

Thank you for these tips. I think you're right about fertilizer causing the mint to become leggy, because that is exactly what had happened to my plant. I also wasn't using enough of it to encourage new growth (I've read that pinching some off on a regular basis will help it grow more bushy). So now I've just planted a new plant in a window that will get morning sun. I won't add fertilizer this time. So hopefully this one might do better. I love mint tea and also like to put some sprigs of mint in cold water as well, to give it flavor. It is excellent for drinking after meals or for stomach problems and is good for children that have upset tummies, too. :)

Good tips. I hope I can find "Root Power" sounds like just what I need for summer fertilizing. A couple of tips: Like I said, the word "Shadow" is usually for scary things. The umbrella will provide "Shade" which is friendly. Trivial comment, but i like it. Another thing that should be obvious but stupid me did not know when I started gardening: Plants in pots do not get much water from rain. It looks foolish watering a potted plant in the rain, but the leaves of the plant produce what is sometimes called a, rain shadow, so the water goes around the plant and not into the pot. Woops, I used scary SHadow instead of friendly Shade. A single person or plant has a shadow and the common terms for a plant s not letting rain through is "rain shadow". Confusing right!?. Thanks for your help with my containers.

Here in France you can find Power Roots on Amazon or in Culture Indoor, it's linked in my description btw! That's actually a very good point about the rain shadow! Sometimes we think our plants had a nice drink but that's not always the case! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻!

Hola amiga! 👋 I'm sure this video will help a lot of folks.😃 We are in our summer temps...100 to 106 daily. It's according to where ya live if all plants need shade, can't be fed or pruned at these temp. My cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers, and many veggie plants laugh at this heat. They are all in containers...fruit trees as well. We do summer prune our trees...they produce better. I have to transplant in this heat to get fall cold crops. I cover the transplants with shade cloth until the temp come down to the mid-80 in late September. Shade cloth keeps my peppers, basil, and other herbs producing in this heat.👩🏾‍🌾💕

Hi! I never said that all plants need shade, I said that some plants, especially young, delicate and recently planted ones, may need extra protection and special care during a heatwave, i.e. extremely high temperatures in your climate. Of course, there are plants that are pruned in the summer, but you won't be pruning them in extreme heat, as you said, you wait until the temperature drops a bit ☺️ Shade cloth is a great idea! Happy gardening 💚
