Here is a short video explaining the new way I did to put 17mm hubs on the savage flux. Works out very well and eliminates virtually 99% of slop. If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment.

I like the pin method you used (put the pin through the axle & carrier and seal it with that wrap thing) better than the snap on system like the standard hex has. But this would same me some cash.

Looks like you should have put a .5mm shim on before he drilled so you would have a tiny bit of slop when removed. Seems like when you put the pin in, there is pressure put on the side of the bearing causing excess side load which will chew up bearings. You can hear the bearing binding when you rotate it after jamming the pin in. I had that issue with some cheap knock off 17mm hubs on my t-maxx back in the day. They didn't line the hole up right or leave enough room for there to be a tiny bit of slop once the pin was in, then it just chewed up bearings all the time. I'm curious where the stock axle pin would be in that associated hub, like where it would line up as for a lay person, it would be easier to drill holes in the hub than the axle, depending on where the existing hole lined up. It looks like it's right in the hex the wheel hub would go on. So, in theory, you could drill new pin holes in the hub itself and then tap one side to use something like the traxxas set screw pins they use in their hubs. I'm not 100% sure the diameter of the pin is large enough for the hpi hubs though, would need to check that. Then you still get the benefit of the load being put on the larger part of the shaft, but don't need a good drill press as much to get the holes drilled in the axles. Which in itself is causing a weak point, especially that close to the bearing. Anyway, just an observation that I might try and do for my flux and X.

Thinking about it. There is no "meat" in the extensions part which is prone to developing play ... the XL axles might be required afterall. Or perhaps the 5T axles?

@RCWinnipeg Yup, put it in a vise and make sure you drill straight. The axles were a lot easier to drill through than I thought. Here are the part #'s. AE 17mm hub-89330 HPI Super Duty Wide Axle-86249

@rcdriver26 AE 17mm hub-89330 HPI Super Duty Wide Axle-86249 I will see what they think. But ya the bearings go quick because of where the load is. it's to far out on the axle.

So whats the part # for the adapter? just got the HPI one but it seems i have to either drill in the axle or dremmel the pins in order for them to fit so its a pain in the a.... but if you could please let me know the part # for yours that be greatly appreciated!

@CODYtheHITMAN That's a hard one as I just got a new Droid X not to long ago. I would say which ever one would be used the most. With the economy and the way prices went up for raw materials, things are only getting more expensive.

@skyhighkite I see what you mean now. What I did was put a shim between the hub carrier and axle that way there was the slightest play possible. And if needed I could always leave the shim in if the hole was to big.

@gplays69 I don't have my savage anymore but I do think with the stock axles and the championship edition hexes might work. They are a little shorter but have the same ring locking on them.
@Divey1130

@rcdriver26 Nope, they slide all the way on till they hit the hub carrier. They have a little raised spot spot that keeps a small space between the hex and the hub carrier.

You can also use the Jammin truggy CVDs as an all in one solution, CVD and 17mm truggy hex all in one. The CVDs can take 6S no problem. Use OFN40657 x2 and OFN30058.

@xxgg Are you stripping them out with my mod or the stock hexes on the truck. Also is it 14mm or 17mm. With mine you will not strip anything out unless your doing some major 100 foot jumps. Stock hexes from the savage flux are junk and come loose all the time and that's when they strip.
@Divey1130
@Divey1130 13 жыл бұрын
@xxgg Yup, a very common issue on the flux. People complain about it all the time and myself included. That's why I wanted something better and looked in all my parts to see what I could come up with. This mod has been working great with no issues at all. If you look at my easter bash video you will see the jumping I do with it. No small jumps at all and no stripped wheels.
@Divey1130

@skyhighkite I'm sorry, I was thinking of a different video. Anyways make the whole to the size of the pin. Of hand I can't remember but it might be 5/16 drill bit but double check. Then the slop from the stock setup is gone. This mod was the best mod I have done for the savage.
@Divey1130
@Divey1130 12 жыл бұрын
@skyhighkite It depends, your limited with wheels when you go with 23mm hexes. Most standard sizes are 17mm so it's personal preference on what you want. I don't have my flux anymore but when I did I never broke the ones I made. And I bashed the snot out of it.
@Divey1130
@Divey1130 13 жыл бұрын
@xxgg Ya, that is what I use for this mod. If your going to stick with the stock nuts/hexes, use a socket wrench (like for automotive) and some thread locker and crank that nut down. Other than that there really isn't much to do. Sign up to Savage Central forums and they have a savage flux section. A ton of good info.
@Divey1130
@Divey1130 13 жыл бұрын
@skguy31 No problem bro. They actually work and work good. Also if you wanted a shorter wheelbase you could use the championship edition hexes which are narrower. They have the same locking ring like these ones.
