Howard Kendall was a real football man and a gentleman too. He had the class to commiserate with Kevin Moran over his sending off despite just losing the FA Cup Final. Absolute class from him.

It was a fully justified sending off. Although Moran argued that he was going for the ball, and I partly believe him, he made absolutely sure that he was also going to get the man if he didn't get the ball so the referee didn't have any option because it looked like a clear run on goal was there for the taking. I still believe that United deserved their win in spite of the 'agricultural' nature of Kevin Moran's challenge though as they regrouped and still found plenty of opportunities for attacking, playing with the greater determination of the two teams and not just trying to soak up the pressure in the hope of gaining - as you could then -.a replay. Still, Everton also deserve their plaudits for a brilliant season. As Meatloaf sang on the classic Bat out of Hell album, Two out of Three ain't Bad.

@@campbellgraham1979 Well, I’m not going to knock you for that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I would expect an Everton fan to say that because he’s speaking out for his club. All I have to go on is that for the last 12 minutes of normal time and the 30 minutes of extra time, United showed the greater determination and won the match. As for being weary over a long season, United, City and Liverpool have at various times had to contend with the same and still gone on to win three trophies in the same season after playing 60 plus games - 70 plus if you count that many of them were international players, capped by their country’s. United were playing two games a week most of the time from February to late May in 1999. That’s just the price of being successful. Still, Everton won the second encounter in 1995. I can’t understand why such a big club, one of the founding members of the - as was then - football league has gone through such an extended drought.

I think Everton’s problem of recent years is really poor recruitment by spending too much money on poor or average players. I’m sure I heard that no other club in the world has spent so much money without winning a trophy for so long.

United relied on Bryan Robson too much then.They could have won the league in 85/86, but when they lost Robbo to those shoulder injuries,it derailed their season.Also selling Mark Hughes to Barcelona in 86 was a massive mistake.Big Ron has since said Sparky wanted to leave, but Hughes himself has said he didn’t really want to go,so you take your pick on who to believe.Former United manager,Tommy Docherty ,said at the time it was a crazy decision to sell Hughes.He said they could have built a team around the likes of Hughes,Whiteside,Robson and McGrath.And he was right.And as we later saw, Alex Ferguson brought him back, and he was a massive influence to the team when they won the Premier league in 93 and the double in 94.

First football match I can remember watching live on tv in the Netherlands. The FA cup Final was the only english game broadcasted in dutch tv live. Other than that we had to make do with an occasional clip of a league game. It was almost like an alien world to me. Since then Everton has become one of my favorite teams because they played in blue shirts just like my own club did. Especially Neville Southall was a favourite after the dutch commentator mentioned that he was a bin man and had hands like shovels.

Swiss fan here. Was fortunate to watch that game on TV. That magnificent Whiteside goal against one of the best goalkeepers in the world (and the best team in Europe) is my oldest (I was 10) and still my most precious football memory. English gameplay in the 80s was not sophisticated but the intensity on the pitches and in the stadiums was simply incredible. One has to wonder why the national team didn't win at least one trophy during that glorious decade.

The FA in England was notoriously old fashioned and refused to give the managers job to the great Brian Clough who would have taken England all the way as he did with Nottingham Forest and Derby County. England had many great players during this era

When the FA Cup was as big as the Champions League is today.. I remember United played Liverpool in the semi finals to get to Wembley that year, the atmosphere and intensity of those two matches (replay was needed) was off the scale, anyone born after about 1990 will never experience anything like that watching football match today . Great days before money ruined the game.

I’m a Forest supporter and those CHALLENGES on Gary Parker and Gary Charles should have seen Gazza sent off that day.He was completely out of control, and Gary Mabbatt as Spurs captain should have calmed him down.The Ref, Roger Milford was weak as piss.That was the era of GAZZAMANIA after Italia 90, and with Princess Diana there, I don’t think Milford had the stomach to send anyone off.If it had been a league game, he’d definitely have gone.

@@derekharrison1582 You’re absolutely right there, Gazza should have been booked for his first foul, (which was every bit as bad as the second one for which he was booked). As I remember the game, the Ref seemed more concerned about posing in his perm than applying the laws of the game. However, leaving aside Gazza getting a ‘free pass’, Moran’s foul was also very bad in the sense that it prevented a goal scoring opportunity. I’m a Liverpool fan, but a great admirer of Brian Clough, who but for Milford being lenient with Gazza, would surely have won the FA Cup, which somehow he seemed ‘cursed’ never to win as a player or manager.

I may be a little late, but you are so right. The FA cup winners should bag a champions league place for a couple of reasons. 1 it would make sure clubs put out a decently strong team. 2 It would give clubs who would not normally play European football a taste of the big games.

There are sections of the Everton fans that hate Liverpool and viceversa but for most its more of a banter thing. Im a blue but I dont hate Liverpool. Its just very painful when they are winning European CUps and we"re going nowhere. I think the Utd-LFC thing is more vicious. The two fanbases seem to have zero love for each other, basically a Celtic-Rangers thing.

That Everton team under Kendall IMO would have won the 1986 European Cup had it not been for the ban and possibly retained it a year later too. I think our boys would have had a great chance to win a European Cup between 85 and 87 but, as we now see with Citeh, no matter how good your team is, it doesnt guarantee a European Cup. And considering we went into decline after 89, I am not so sure we would have had enough time for European success.

Major win for United against the best team in the league that year, Everton, who won the First Division title and European Cup Winners Cup in 1985. United stopped them getting a treble, similar to 1977 when United stopped Liverpool. Robson was always injured! I think he spent 108 weeks of his career out injured! With hindsight I think alot of players in those days drank way too much.. and Robson was one of them..I think that's a reason why he got injured, his refuelling and rehab was wrong .. still a football great as where all those players .. great days!

It's hard to explain why, but this final just felt "BIG" somehow. Obviously all FA Cup finals did in those days, but this one had an epic scale for some reason. Going to extra-time and being decided by a single (amazing) goal helped. The Manchester-Liverpool angle, the red card and the recent 5-0 in the league added detail. For me, the 1991 final also felt "massive", and I guess the 1986 one did too. I guess that one would be the big one for anyone in Liverpool, with it being the first derby final, Liverpool going for the double and it being the undisputed two best teams in the country.

I'm a United fan but I thought Everton were the best side overall and unlucky to lose. I also think that Moran's sending off was justified and the subsequent tratment of the referee unjustified. Finally, I think that the sending off galvanised United to victory.

By today's standards he should have been sent off. However, to gauge what what people thought then, professionals on the pitch, I don't think Peter Reid saw it to be justified, if you manage to see the post-match interviews, Reid was outspoken of how incorrect a decision it was, it wasn't just lip service at the time, on the pitch when the ref had already made his decision. Further, look how Howard Kendall, and Peter Reid, both consoled Moran for being sent off and not competing in the whole match - you would never get a manager do that today for that sort of tackle. Personally, I think you have a point, even for standards back then, it was a nasty challenge with three on one, I didn't understand why it was so controversial that he went, maybe as it was the Cup Final and it had never happened before. It was my first Cup Final, and being a Red, it cemented by allegiance, especially as my brother is a Blue Nose.

Anglozion 76 That was the reason why there was such a storm over the sending off at the time: because it was the FA Cup Final, and nobody had ever been sent off before. Think there was an unspoken convention until then that no player would be sent off, due to the occasion. The ref was totally demonised after the game, but that was totally unfair: the tackle was dangerous, and Reid would not only have been clean through, there were two Everton players in support. It was totally the correct decision, even by standards of the day. Worst thing is, in the 1980 FA Cup Final, Willie Young did a very similar thing to Paul Allen and there was total outrage that Young wasn’t sent off, but at the time, the ref was only allowed to book Young, not send him off, thats what caused the change in the rule for a professional foul by the last defender.

One of my overriding memories of this game was an incident mid -way in the second half. Seated near the half way line I remember Andy Gray chasing a forward pass, and his legs unable take him forward. At that stage Howard Kendall should have brought on sub, Alan Harper, a great right sided player. United tactically outthought Everton by exploiting wing play to stretch them , after Moran was sent off. Harper was a strong athletic player who would have blocked that tactic. A question to the English Football Experts. This was in 1985 and the referee did not use cards ? When were they introduced in England ? In Germany they were used since 1971

We introduced them in the mid-70s, but got rid of them again in 81. They were deemed to be creating flashpoints instigating crowd trouble. They returned a couple of years after this cup final when the IFAB made them compulsory.

It's been commented in several posts how gracious Howard Kendall was in congratulating/commiserating Kevin Moran after the final whistle. Yes he was indeed, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't Moran have been banished to the dressing room after being sent off and therefore not sat pitchside with the United squad?

This team use to frustrate me to bits. I loved them to death. At full strength, they could beat anyone. Even decimated and red carded they could be brilliant. But they could also lose to anyone. Would definitely win a title or two in the 80s if Robson stayed fit.

The send-off was a bit harsh. You mean to tell that in all the history of FA Cup Finals up to 1985, that was the worst tackle? It also struck me as too far away to be considered a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity. But Man United did the unbelievable and still won the game. What a gutsy performance.

Willie Young’s was worse, but in 1980, there was no rule in place where a player could be sent off if he committed a foul as the last defender, to prevent a clear goal scoring opportunity, with no other defenders. That foul caused such outrage, that it changed the rules of the game, meaning that the defender could be automatically sent off in this situation.
