This is the day I fell in love with Utd. I had supported them from birth (thanks to my big brothers) but this game cemented them in my heart forever. Me and my mate broke my brothers settee jumping up and down on it. 11 year old at the time and it still brings a tear to my eye. Thank you Utd

I watched this live on tv in Nigeria as we had just moved there earlier that year. I had this Utd kit though not the cup final edition and my favourite players from that era were Gordon Hill, Lou Macari and Steve Coppell

Me too…exact same match…but the other way round. I had no idea who either team were or their relative levels. I remember it to this day…..started watching when Utd were one up and for some reason I thought that Liverpool must be underdogs so decided to root for them. Then Jimmy Case scored to equalise before Jimmy Greenough fluke deflection won it. Even at 7 years old and in-spite of being beaten I decided then that Liverpool would be my team….in hindsight that was the right decision given we won the European Cup 4 days later and how the teams performed for the next 13 years. My childhood was spent celebrating title after title…..not so much after I was twenty but by that time I could be more philosophical about it. I also broke my Mums settee when Kenny Dalglish scored the winner against Bruges in the European Cup the following year. My Dad was a rugby fan so didn’t have a team he supported to influence me so it was always going to be my choice. Who knows if I hadn’t happened upon this game how it would have been. Dread to think cos Leeds are the nearest team to where I grew up *shudders*

I was 12 at the time, and this VICTORY meant the world to me, for three major reasons. 1) Winning the FA Cup. Duh! 2) Had lost the 1976 final to some club called Soufton, or something. So, redemption. 3) My bullying, elder sister was a Liverpool fan... so her running up the stairs, slamming her bedroom door, and 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 = one of my best childhood memories. 😁

It was a tense day all right. I was in student digs in Islington and a few mates came down from Manchester on the Friday night. That Liverpool team was pretty awesome. They'd won the league and were off to the European Cup final. We had been beaten by Southampton the year before and played a totally different style to Bob Paisley's team. But there was just something about United and my gut feeling that we'd win never went away, even after Case equalized. We scored our second before they could start to turn the screw and that night, we got utterly plastered. A few days later, we cheered on Liverpool as they won in Rome. United fans cheering for Liverpool to win says it all about that amazing time. Soon after, the Doc was gone. I still maintain that he'd have brought the 1st Division title to Old Trafford by 1980 had he been allowed to stay and finish what he'd started.

@@edmundpower1250 Since your comment I've recently consulted 'The Infallible Book Of Infinite and Universal Facts' and it definitely states that Manchester United won the 1977 FA Cup Final, 2-1. But then that night, I had a dream. No, a vision! In which St Michael appeared before me, and tasked me to warn you that if you continued to question 'The Infallible Book Of Infinite and Universal Facts', then he'd come down and slap you around a bit. So, I've fulfilled my function; consider yourself warned, and repent for your sins, heretic.

United started well that season and were top of the league in early October. Then Buchan got injured and they couldn't function without him. He came back in mid-December and, of the 21 league and cup matches between Christmas and mid-April, United W 16 D 3 L 2. By then they were in the FA Cup semis and they threw three or four of the remaining league matches before winning at Wembley.

This was nearly 22 years before I was born, and 33 years before I started following United. Honestly, it it’s so satisfying that we denied Livershit the treble, and must have felt so good at the time. It’s such a fuckin shame that we couldn’t repeat it this year by defeating Man Shitty in the Fa Cup Final. Our treble will still live on as the first treble by an English club, and the only legitimate one. We won our treble organically, without cheating.

Nope. The end of the Tommy Docherty era. Dave Sexton became manager a few months later from the 77/78 season onwards until 1981 after 'The Doc' was sacked. Despite the obviously great Liverpool team of the time and Cloughie's Forest, I still think the Doc could have won United the league with that exciting team which he was building... But then he met Laurie Brown's (United's Physio) wife and the rest is history!
