The South Armagh Brigades of the PIRA were effectively autonomous. Even the oglaigh leadership had little control over the South Armagh brigades, who were bankrolling the wider IRA and had an extraordinary record of spectacular attacks. The South Armagh brigades, (there were two,) were one of the most effective guerilla armies in history.

It wasn’t a war, it was a conflict involving a section of the Irish population only, hundreds and thousands of Irish people were moving about, travelling to & working on the island of Britain, if there was a war that just would not have remotely happened. It’s just nonsense to call it a war when you look at what I’ve outlined.

How many of the perpetrators of Bloody Sunday (the same group attacked at Narrow Water) did the RUC and British Government seek to prosecute and bring before the courts? Not sure why they thought people were going to feel sympathy and start helping to bring these people before the courts when they refused to redo that very thing.

Well, honestly, what does one expect? The British are in the north-eastern section of Ireland against the will of the vast majority of the Irish people. Of course the British will strike resistance to their rule anywhere in Ireland. It can hardly be otherwise. Resistance to the military-forced imposition of English/British rule in Ireland has been going on since the 12th century.

The British are not in Ireland, they are in Northern Ireland, a region of the United Kingdom. Does it bother me, as an Irish man, that Northern Ireland is a separate jurisdiction and part of the UK? Not really. In my lifetime, that is the way that it has always been. I don’t know of too many people in Ireland who are up in arms about the current two State solution that evolved following partition. Rightly or wrongly, partition happened 100+ years ago. This can’t be changed. No majority in Northern Ireland who wish to exit the United Kingdom. The violence of the troubles did not make unification more likely, if anything, it has shown that unification would only create more tension and divisions. Brexit has not made unification more likely. The Windsor Framework has actually made unification less appealing for businesses in Northern Ireland who trade in the UK and EU. Terrorism is never a solution. You cannot force your will by violence and murder.

It should have come as no surprise to the RUC and everyone else in Northern Ireland that the Guarda would not cooperate by handing over the suspected perpetrators.The Republic of Ireland was more or less created by the IRA. The leaders of the Irish revolts from 1916 to 1923 are revered as national heroes. Nearlly all had IRA connections. During the Troubles period, the sympathy of the Republic's people was entirely with the IRA and hostile to the British security forces seeking to destroy it. The RUC should have grasped more quickly that the Guarda would never dare to hand over IRA suspects to them, and have complained less about their predictable non-cooperation.
@taintabird23
@taintabird23 Жыл бұрын
I can tell you somebody who lived through it, that your opinion is simplistic. By 1979 people in the south did not view the IRA as being the same as the IRA that had created the state and many were appalled by Bloody Friday, Kingsmill and other cold blooded murders of civilians. It was the year of the centenary of the birth of Patrick Pearse and the Wolf Tones were popular on the radio. It was government policy to treat the problems of NI as the British governments problem and to seal the south off from it as best it could. Relations with London were terrible. The IRA killed two members of the Garda in 1979, and another in 1980.
