It’s crazy that their real world is so horrible but Momonga just makes it out to be that his life wasn’t fun with the usually 9-5 and barely making money from it. Their world was so polluted they’d die without any artificial organs and most people eat food pastes with 0 tastes. Yeah I wish we could see and learn more about their outside world cause that seems like it’d be a very interesting story line.

I think it's important to realize that if the world had been that way his whole life, he'd not think of it as horrible like we would. He'd likely just see it as normal. Most people would likely see it that way at least. It also sounds like VR was commonly used as escapism to the highest degree.

But if the world really was that miserable it makes you wonder why any of his friends even left the game in the first place. Especially members such as Ulbert who were just as miserable as Momonga. It's not like the writer is good at writing to begin with though, so yeah I'm sure a lot of the story is afterthoughts.

The price of food inevitably soared, and raw fruits and vegetables became luxury goods that ordinary people couldn't get their hands on." "Since the environment had been destroyed, it had gotten difficult to acquire fresh meat or vegetables, so the poor ate mostly supplements and processed food designed with only nutrition delivery in mind. As ingredients were exhausted, the dining industry declined, and a gourmet meal was something only residents of the arcologies could enjoy." So they could still get a meal but tasteless and just enough. For the rest, momonga spends 1/3 of his salary in yggdrasil it's said because he have nothing else, his mother died due to overwork in front of him when he was little and he never received any love from his father(which leaved in the end), he got no other relatives and no one else so he began to play VR games thus becoming what he was at the end and why he used so much money on it, he's "middle class" btw but in their reality not being rich = poor because the gap from middle class to rich is just insane and the gap from middle class and poor is not much so you understand why he's considered "poor" even as a middle class: "To the wealthy, terrorism, war, and looting were fantastical things that happened in some far-off land." so the "middle class" and "poor" were considered the same, while richer people were living like in another world. I guess it just depends since those who are brought back to life might not be willing to serve an evil necromancer so they could probably kill the individual a second time and turn them into a standard undead servant or similar if they refuse to enlist with Ainz.

If Ainz does revive some that would be cool though. I think Brain has potential to be brought back at least as they did put a lot of effort into developing his character.

Fun fact, in the WN, Brain failed to escape from Shalltear during their first encounter. She ends up biting and vamping him, taking particular pleasure in making him sing her praises despite him disliking women. Considering Shalltear seemed upset with Brain escaping him a second time in E-Rantel (only due to Climb being nearby) and she might feel ‘cheated’ about Cocytus stealing her quarry..,

once you know all the dark lore behind overlord it becomes much darker than if you had just watched the anime (which is how i watched the first three seasons-i knew none of the lore behind it at first) and its so much better when you know it, this is why its my favourite anime which ive watched 8 time over now just because the lore behind it goes so deep (i really need to read the light novel and other things cos theres so much that isnt explained in the anime that you could probably make a whole extra season because it)

Same old darkness? I disagree! The oppressive nobles and government in Re-Estize were terrible and corrupt, but the Sorcerer Kingdom is quite a different story. Ainz aside, the ones really running the Sorcerer Kingdom are Albedo as defacto prime minister and Sebas who is put in charge of running the city of E-Rantel. The common people in E-Rantel and the surrounding area understand they are subjects under Ainz and displeasing him is very unwise, but their lives are considerably improved over what they had before. Corruption are dramatically reduced while security and opportunity have risen dramatically. The Justice system in the Sorcerer Kingdom is actually very fair and reliable, those accused of a crime are made to tell the truth under a magic spell, if they are innocent then they are released with a note verifying them as such, the guilty are punished. The security is excellent and problems are taken care of swiftly, and no one is stupid enough to dare attack the Sorcerer Kingdom (save for Phillip). The villages destroyed by the sunlight scripture are now being repopulated by the poorer people of E-Rantel, while the old downtrodden district of that city was demolished to make room for the many non-human species that now share the city with the native human populace. So long as they don't do something foolish, the people are quite safe and have a secure future. Certainly many were and probably still are concerned with the many undead in the city, but they can't do much about it so they are left with little choice but to accept it. And the people believe in Momon and feel some reassurance that he will protect them or at least kill the Sorcerer King if he breaks their 'agreement'. Even the Slane Theocracy is completely shocked by the situation in E-Rantel where humans and monsters and undead are all living together in relative harmony, it's like religious zealots seeing people of all creeds and beliefs living together without bloodshed, they can't comprehend how such a thing is possible. Say what you will about Ainz and Nazarick, they have committed both good and evil. For those willing to bend the knee and acknowledge Ainz as their ruler and behave themselves, life will go on and even improve considerably. For those who oppose Ainz and stand against him, that didn't work out so well for Re-Estize did it...

Maybe Ainz would try to keep the monopoly over industrial development in order to avoid it moves too fast and destroys the environment. By doing this he would drastically reduce the influence and wealth of merchants and nobles and reinforce its hegemony over the world. If the new world started to eventually reach high pollution levels , Ainz could use his magic to seek new planets to colonize, move its industry abroad and repeat the same process over and over.

If you’re curious, ‘painkiller’ magic, of a sorts, does exist. Demiurge doesn’t use it cuz he’s a massive sadist who gets off from the pain and suffering. The scrolls aren’t even that good quality to Nazerick, Demiurge just enjoys hurting people.

@@null8036 yes, it is true. I had read it in the novel that Demiurge is very and pure evil he loves torturing not to kill but to witness their suffering. The method he use to collect the skin off human is so painful but it is very careful so the human not die by the pain in order for him to witness the suffering for more longer. If there is no Ainz with them I believe Demiurge will make the whole new world his happy farm. Very sad is that the scroll made of human skin only can be use to magic up to tier 3 for the New world it is indeed top item and very rare, but for nazarik it is a trash consider nazarik can use up to tier 10 magic

Nope if a played died in the game they would just drop some of their gear and respawn elsewhere. Initially it was the corpses of the sunlight scripture, after that they took corpses from the E-Rantel graveyard, then it was a mix of people they killed in the new world, all the people Demiurge took from the capital while he was pretending to be that evil demon king is season 2, the bodies that were not crushed by the giant goats from the battle against the kingdom, probably bodies from the Holy Kingdom and bodies from the settlements they destroyed in kingdom as well. So that Ainz and Pandora's actors can create a set amount of undead each, every single day. That Frost Dragon and his son also end up there, so they can harvest their materials, revive them then harvest the materials again over and over.

The funny thing is that letting all the isekai travel aside, is all a plausible future and realistic choices and personalities, like the band of brain unglaus being a bunch of rapist and murderers, because they had the power to do it, the theocracy being xenophobic and plotting against the imperials and kingdoms, people like demiurge who finds without caring about the consequences or morality being able to produce spells, items or other sources of power, nobles who are a bunch of assholes and good ones, child prostitution and enslavement. Farmers being killed or abused by nobility, the protagonist acting more like a real dictator than a cliché villain...

So far as i've seen, Overlord doesn't justify it. Explanations are not justifications and in the LN Clemantine herself mocks the idea before killing an ally. That said, it really does. You don't have to accept it, or tollerate it, but yes trauma justifies evil. I've had a good life. I try to be good and it makes me feel great to succeed. I have friends who were passed around by rapists. Their every breath is tinged with fear, pain, or anxiety. Even when they do good, it poisons their day. They can't just sit, breath, and enjoy their good acts. What incentive do they have to be good? Only in times where they abuse their own power do they feel some level of comfort. They know it's wrong, they don't give in often, and they are mostly unhappy. Justify being good to someone like that.

You can get some people to that point through abuse. It is "justified" because the obligation to be good only means something if you can achieve happiness or content in exchange. It does not have to be given to you, but you have to at least have the ability to pursue it and some people don't.
