Today is Sunday. I live in Palm Springs California. Two hours away from the LA fires. They didn't stop burning. We are in the desert, so we thing there isn't in off brush to burn. We are older and very concern. My hart is broken for all the people that died. And lost their homes.

Just an idea: leave routes to run fibre optic cables for your internet. Fibre is cheap and not affected by electricity. I can recommend parts, but the cables/fibre needs routes, and you’re doing that now
@OperationSicily6 күн бұрын
That’s a great idea! Are you referring to Cat 5/6 cables for Ethernet, or do you mean actual fibre optic cables? Christ Jonathan watching you struggle with that mixer on the stairs,, your back will not thank you in years to come fella (ask me how I know this 😉) Can I perhaps recommend a small side project? - a cheep sack trolley and a 4 feet wide x 8 feet long plywood or scaffold board ramp that would be flush with the top step, supported on each step and along the ground will let you safely carry loads easily into the house, and it will be light enough that you can move it out of the way in foul weather. More filthy but worthwhile work my friend, I really respect the fact that you work hard with great attention to details but freely share advice to help others. Stay safe, see you next week
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
You are absolutely right-lugging that mixer up the stairs was definitely a challenge, and my back will probably remind me of it in years to come (I won’t even ask how you know this! 😅). Your suggestion for a sack trolley and a plywood or scaffold board ramp is fantastic and would make life so much easier. The only downside is that ply and sheet material are surprisingly expensive here in Sicily for some reason, so I’ve been trying to keep costs down wherever I can. That said, it’s definitely something I’ll look into as a side project-it would save me a lot of time and effort in the long run. Working alone can be tough, but sometimes you just have to push through and get the job done, no matter how messy or exhausting it gets. I really appreciate your kind words and respect for the work I’m doing-comments like yours keep me motivated! 💪 I hope you enjoyed the video, and I’ll see you next week for more progress. Take care and stay safe, my friend! 😊🏡

In most of Italy at building supply places they used to sell these heavy duty yellow composite boards around 50cmx2mt they use for ramps for wheel barrows of cement... they were cheap about 12eu/ea 5 yrs ago, tho I'm sure the price has gone up with all this stupid inflation now. I used them for all kinds of things, long plant stands, countertops for a BBQ area and a potting shed bench... they're tough as nails and will never warp, just sand and paint the color you like or set tiles on top.

Hello Jonathan, I do know that you are in Sicily , I was just using Portugal as a comparison temperature wise to France where I am. Its cold here but warm there and at the moment it is very appealing. Apologies for the confusion.
@OperationSicily6 күн бұрын
You’re absolutely right about the temperatures being similar. It’s currently around 15 degrees here during the day-definitely t-shirt and joggers weather for me, lol! Meanwhile, the locals are bundled up like I’d be in the UK. 😂 Speaking of the UK, it’s been snowing and dropping to around -4 to -6 degrees-so I can’t complain about the Sicilian "winter." Would you ever consider moving somewhere warmer yourself? Sicily certainly has its charms, especially with its mild winters. 🌞

@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Absolutely, mate-this mixer is going to be a real workhorse with the endless list of jobs ahead! Putting it together was definitely an experience-it felt like IKEA flat-pack but with a few extra bolts 😂. Fingers crossed the motor holds up well. For a 160L mixer, I thought the price was decent at around 350 euros (£300). What do you think-good deal?
@johnmclean10467 күн бұрын
Yes good deal if it’s got a years warranty ? You’ll use it loads and if you only got your year out of it it’s money well spent plus the time and effort it will save over hand mixing, spot boards etc, your quids in .

use a bit (10-20 %) chalk in the mortar for inside use: it makes it better stick.
@OperationSicily6 күн бұрын
That’s a fantastic tip-thank you! I can definitely see how adding chalk to the mortar would help it stick better. I’ve never used it before, but I’ll check with the builders’ merchants to see if they stock any. 😊 The first back box I worked on in the video was a bit rough since I forgot to wet it! After that, I got the sprayer out and made sure to wet them all properly, which made a big difference. It’s been a while since I’ve worked with a trowel and cement, so the first few were a bit messy, but once I got into a rhythm, they went fine. It also didn’t help that the sand I bought was sharp sand-it wasn’t ideal for this job! By the way, if you’re on Facebook, I’ve started a group for the community to share tips, advice, and ideas. If your going to make a slabbed area, driveway turning space, use all your rubble compact it down and saves buying type 1
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Hi John! 😊 That’s a great suggestion, and I’m definitely making use of the rubble where I can. At the moment, I’ve been using it as backfill for the rear garden terrace, which needs to be built up by around 2-3 feet, so it’s coming in handy for that! As for the driveway, I’m still unsure what material I’ll end up using-it’s probably going to depend on what’s available and cost-effective locally. But I’ll definitely keep your tip in mind, as compacting rubble could save a lot of money in the long run. Thanks for sharing your advice, and I hope you enjoyed this week’s video! Plenty more progress to come, so stay tuned for the next one. Cheers! 😊🏡

Hi Jonathan,😊 What great progress, it's very exciting to see how everything is getting better and better. I've been thinking about whether it's hard to be without family, especially the boys who aren't adults. They must miss dad so much. It's nice when you can be together again because those children are growing up, you don't even realize how fast it goes. It seems like my son has been the little one - smiling - and doesn't understand where the years have flown. I'm waiting for a very decisive answer about the health and will call and move on Monday as my nerves are hanging out on the clothes. It's been over 4 weeks now. Hope everything is well with you and that despite all the work you enjoy it every now and then. May you be well. Many loving greetings from Maria.😊

Thank you so much, Maude! 😊 I’m glad you’re enjoying the progress so far. To be honest, I’ve made very little progress burning the tree stumps out, even with the charcoal-it seems the wood is still too green and wet to burn effectively. It’s been a bit frustrating because they really need to go, as they’re directly in the way of where I need to finish the footings for the planter beds. I’ll keep experimenting with different methods, though, and I’ll definitely share the updates in future videos! 🇨🇦 Thanks for watching and for your support-it means a lot. Great question, thanks for asking! 😊 I’m a massive fan of large open spaces, especially the idea of an open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area. However, for this property, I’ve decided to keep the existing layout since I’ll be spending most of my time outdoors. If this were a colder climate where I’d be indoors more, I’d definitely consider taking some walls down! That said, I am removing the wall separating the lounge from the tower-this space will be open and feature a stunning spiral staircase. 🏡✨ By the way, I’ve set up a new Facebook group where we can share ideas, advice, and tips-it’s all about expanding this amazing community. Hindsight but you should have marked off where you want your driveway and sidewalk and take all the rubble from your house and dump it there then when you're finished everything have them come in and roll it and put in 4 oz of asphalt on top and you'll have a very stable beautiful drive
@OperationSicily2 күн бұрын
Thank you for the great suggestion! 😊 The driveway is actually already marked out-it’ll be either side of the footings and planter beds in the front garden. All the rubble from inside the house and garden has already been reused as backfill to help raise the rear garden terrace, which needs to go up by about 3 feet. ♻️ New video out tonight-hope you enjoy it! Hi - Love the videos. Can I ask you a question about transport when you are at your house. Do you rent a car or did you buy one. Hi Ron, thanks for the comment and support! 😊 The plan is to have this property completed this year-it’s been a long journey, but I'm getting there. Once it’s all done, this will be my family’s permanent home in Sicily. No holiday home for us-just a full-time Sicilian adventure! 🌟

Beware of Asbestos in these older celings/ roofs
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Great point, Paul. I've been super cautious when working on the ceilings and roof. Thankfully, no asbestos found so far, but I’ll keep an eye out and make sure everything is checked properly. Safety first, always! Appreciate the heads-up. 👍

Does your family and friends watch your videos back in the UK?
@OperationSicily2 күн бұрын
Yes, a few family and friends back in the UK watch my videos, and they’ve been really supportive throughout this journey. It’s great knowing they’re following along! 😊 New video out tonight-hope you enjoy it! Have a lovely weekend. 🌟

Nice progress. Here in the US Ford cars suck, I owned one once and it was a terrible POS.
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Thanks, Scotty! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the progress in this week’s video. I’m totally in the same boat as you when it comes to Fords-definitely not my favorite either. I was absolutely gutted when I picked up the hire car and saw it was a Ford. Thankfully, I’ve now switched to a VW, and it’s a much better experience! 🚗💨 Appreciate you taking the time to comment, and I hope you’re enjoying the series. Stay tuned for next week’s updates-there’s plenty more progress on the way! 👏🏡

Captain should be auto-generated an automatic you don't have to type anything in check out all the KZbins that have CC and you can do this time but you have to turn on CC
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately, I’ve had some issues with KZbin not allowing me to upload subtitles even though I’ve spent hours preparing them. I’ll definitely look into the auto-generated captions to see if I can activate them. Your feedback means a lot-thank you for sticking with me on this journey!

Where are you living while you work on your house?
@OperationSicily2 күн бұрын
Thanks for asking! 😊 I’m currently renting an Airbnb while working on the villa. It’s been a great temporary solution until I get the basics like water and electricity sorted in the house. New video out tonight-hope you enjoy it! Have a lovely weekend. 🌟🏡

Can Brits live in Sicily ? Is it easy to get a residence permit visa ? I’m sure you have explained all this before But for us newbies to your Vlog can you say?
@OperationSicily6 күн бұрын
Yes, of course, Brits can live in Sicily! 🇮🇹 Getting a visa is relatively straightforward, but it all depends on the type of visa you're after-whether it's for retirement, self-employment, or something else. It also varies depending on which country you're coming from; for example, folks from Russia or China might have a few extra hoops to jump through compared to someone from the UK. I’ve actually covered a lot about the visa process and my experience in earlier videos, so I’d love for you to catch up on those-it’s been an incredible journey so far! 😊 Also, I’ve set up a new Facebook group to continue the community vibe we’ve got here and share tips, advice, and ideas. The link is in the video description-would be great to see you there! 🎉

So have you rented a little apartment until you can make at least one room livable in the house?
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Yep, I’m currently renting an Airbnb while I work on getting the house to a livable state with the basics like water and electricity. Once those are sorted, I’ll be moving in and continuing the renovation from there. Thanks for asking and following along!

@OperationSicily, you will mate. You're doing something I wanted to do in Portugal years ago, but at 77 it's a bit too late. The commission will be used to toast your completion of the restoration 😂😂

Peccato che non ci sono i sottotitoli in Italiano
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын

Can't you wire it yourself and get the main lecey to certificate it save yourself a fortune mucker it's easy 😅
@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
Hi Gordon, thanks for the suggestion! 😊 In the UK, I’d definitely do the wiring myself, as I’ve got a few electrician mates who can sort me out with a certificate. However, it’s a different story here in Sicily, especially with the Geometra on board. Everything needs to be signed off properly when the project is finished, and the regulations are pretty strict. To make things even more complicated, I’m having to go with three-phase electricity, as single-phase just won’t cut the mustard for what I need here. On top of that, there’s no mains electricity to the villa at the moment, so the electric board is also involved, which adds another layer of paperwork and process. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts, though-it’s always great to hear different perspectives! Hope you’re enjoying the series, and there’s plenty more progress to come. See you next week! 😊⚡🏡

If I were you I would bite the bullet on the electrical stuff to the experts. No offense but from watching you struggle with some things I wonder do you have much building experience?
@mememe3327 күн бұрын
The pronunciation for geometra is ge om et ra, not geo met ra. What is your situation for your visa? Will you be able to stay more than 180 days a year?

Do not to photo of location of wireing for future reference pete
@OperationSicily6 күн бұрын
Thanks, Pete, that’s fantastic advice, and it’s something I always make sure to do! 📸 I take loads of photos and record measurements for both the wiring and plumbing-it’s an absolute lifesaver for future work. Trying to hang a picture or shelf without knowing exactly where the wires are would be like playing Russian roulette! 🎯 Appreciate the reminder, though-it’s always good to double-check. By the way, I’ve set up a new Facebook group where we can share ideas, advice, and tips-link is in the video description if you’d like to join! 😊

@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
I really appreciate your feedback! I’m so sorry about the lack of subtitles-it’s not intentional. I’ve been trying to upload them, but KZbin hasn’t allowed it on a few videos for some reason. I’m doing my best to get this sorted. Thanks so much for your patience!

Thank you for bringing this up-I’m really sorry that the lack of captions is making it harder to follow along. I’ve been trying to upload subtitles, but KZbin hasn’t been letting me for some reason. I’m working on fixing this for future videos, and I really appreciate your patience and support!

@OperationSicily7 күн бұрын
