I have refreshed the firmware of the 18-1800 transmission version, but it still cannot transmit in the aviation frequency band 118-136. The receiver cannot receive sound, but there is a prompt on the screen and the green light will also be on. May I ask how to solve it? Does the hardware need to be modified?

Just recieved this unit today, after purchasing it some weeks back in China, as it was so ludicrisly cheap, not least from a danish perspective., where everything is very pricey.. as both shipping and VAT +25% elevates it a lot. but 17 - US in total with VAT and shipping, seemed weirdly low, with incl. AC chargercradle, beltclip, typeC cable just seemed to cheap to pass on.. just did a wattage test on K5 146Mhz - High-mode peak 5.05W and settles around 4.99W (SWR1.01 dummyload) - Medium-mode peak 3.44W settles at 3.41W (SWR1.01 dummyload) - Low-mode peak 1.54 setttles at 1.52W (SWR1.01 dummyload) If anybody checked theirs at 146Mhz, would love to hear the values. Used Wattage & SWR tool surecom SW33+ with a 20W dummyload that came incl. (an wattage/SWT tool to around 30 to 35 bucks). The only other programable walkie i got is, the 8800+ which is way more expensive at around 55 US. thx for the hint abolut this software, could make these KV5 very popular

Easy way to jump into the 23cm band is put in 999.999 then hold the up button then at the same time press the down button and it will jump to 470, press the down button to jump down to 300 then again press the down button and it will jump to the top of the 23cm band, will show something like 2995, just the '1' missing. If you have it set on 25khz steps it's easy to go down to where you want . Save it in memory like normal and when you retrieve the frequency it works, save doing the procedure again. Getting it to jump bands by holding the up button as above but this time a press of the middle button on the left seems to do the same trick. Radio also TX on 925.5 which is our allocation. Don't expect much power out but it's a handy shack tool as a signal generator.

Also, when you punched in 1000 MHz on the TPI, you could click the Modulation tab and punch in a 1Khz FM tone with modulation level set to 20% or so. That way you could hear it on the UV-K5. ;) and..... I would think you might want to turn down the RF Output Level on the TPI to something like -85dBm to verify it will receive well on a low level signal. Right now at your -40dBm level youre not really making sure there arent issues with the Front End of radio in hearing weak signals. 👌

I think in past videos on Quansheng you mentioned many other names associated to it. For example availability here in the States it's easy to aquire a Anysecu radio which is identical to the Quasheng and to which I was able to perform one of the earlier hacks to unlock 220 band.BTW it's OK for receiving but not for transmitting , little to no pwer output. Nice little radio but tempted to try the Quansheng hacks just to see if workable for extended recieve like you have tried. I get the risks & may brick it but enjoy experimentation and radio was pretty inexpensive and cheaply enough to replace if I choose. I'll let ya know what happens down the page once I get to it !

The AnySecu is the radio I used for this firmware and it works. K5_26 top of the firmware update list. In case you are interested. Same radio. I have both Quansheng and AnySecu radios. TX on 54 MHz is usable on FM. Below that, and AM is poor audio, even receive. So, 50-54, 144-148, 220-225, 430-470 MHz. I have not tried 29 MHz FM audio yet. You'll need a resonant antenna, on other bands, or an antenna tuner that will tune QRP, or very low power, 1/4 watt, 250 milliwatts.

If you program 999.995, in the 5KHz step mode then use the arrow keys to scroll UP, it will take you down below the AM radio band 000.oo on the display. Not sure what the receive is down there. I am unable to receive AM radio from a local AM station at 1590 AM. The display does go there. Using the UP arrow left of the speaker, it takes you down to 000.oo on the display. Not sure how to get 1.3 GHz to program into the 6 digit plus 2 display, 999.995.oo. The firmware does work. Version K5_26 which is the latest firmware? AnySecu radio model UV-K5, same radio. So far tested, 28-30, 50-54, 144-148, 220-225, 430-470, 900 Mhz Ham bands and beyond. FM, TX and RX confirmed. The system on a chip provides from DC to daylight, the circuitry of the radio does not support the entire HF bands below 18 MHz. Thank you. 73'

@johnwest7993

Displaying frequencies on the screen means pretty much nothing, even if the oscillators will oscillate on those frequencies. There are hardware LC filters built in, preselectors, (bandpass filters,) low-pass output filters, etc, that will block reception sensitivity and output signals on any frequency that is not among those designed into the radio. So on receive the radio will have 2 bandpass filters. Either one or the other will be switched in, period. The radio will be essentially deaf to any other band. On transmit there will be 2 low-pass filters, one for each band to filter out harmonic multiples above the transmit band. The radio will switch in one or the other, period. The transmit output stages themselves are tuned for those 2 bands, so their impedances will typically go to Hell very far outside those bands, so the chance of blowing them goes way up. Multi-band radios are expensive precisely due to having to add banks of the correct filters and impedance matching elements, and of course the switching for all of those bands. These frequency-opening mods aren't the magic mods and secret bands that are a joy to so many hackers and experimenters. They are simply detuning a radio so that it no longer works correctly. Playing with these parameters in these HT's is equivalent to tuning a car engine so that it operates well above red-line into a constricted exhaust system. Everything is just wrong. You don't get a race car. You get a blown-up engine or one that won't start. I'd suggest that if someone wants to experiment with multi-band mods they should start with an ADX type rig, some down-converter circuits, a bag of toroids and capacitors, a soldering iron, a NanoVNA, and a TinySA. That way actually works, and coincidentally is what hams are actually licensed to do, with the exception of transmitting on anything but a ham band.

software mods preceed hardware mods these days. now we know the software can play nice we can poke around with the filters. maybe they can be bypassed then use a tuned filter on the antenna side to keep it legal. a mat-10 tuner taped to the back and a 5m whip might get kq2h on a good day?

Furthermore, you could quite legitimately bodge this radio and use it as an exciter. Tx low power, and do the filtering and PA yourself, or mix with an LO to convert for some other hardware. Not that I think anyone here cares about that, but it addresses the credibility of the mod.

Hey Hayden, Thanks a million for this video, my UV-K6 turned up yesterday, having used it for a couple of hours, I note a couple of things: It's easier to programme than my Baofeng UV-5R, without a programming cable I mean. I did buy a cable with the UV-K6, your video on the firmware upgrades was awesome, although it took a moment to get around downloading the firmware from GitHub, I've never had to do this before. The stock antenna makes the radio as deaf a a post, I changed it for another that I had and I could hear the local fire brigade of which I am a member, it was as clear as day! Not sure if I'm having a senior moment here, but in the programming software (with respect to 2m repeaters) it asks for the receive frequency and the transmit frequency, is that the radio end or the repeater it is asking for in either case? I stared at this for some time, thinking, what??? One final thing, in all of the frequencies I've programmed into this radio after the firmware upgrade, I still cannot TX on anything out of the usual 2m/70cm band plan, that is exactly what I wanted, I can RX but not TX.
@HamRadioDX
@HamRadioDX 11 ай бұрын
I’d recommend using Chirp mate to program - it’s much easier and better than the QS software (I wouldn’t recommend using it or installing it). When it asks for receive frequency it means the repeaters TX freq (i.e. the frequency the radio listens to). The opposite way around when it asks for transmit. I hope that helps

Suppose I had the extra rating so I could talk on the hf bands, and I tested the radio to confirm there are no spurious emissions, could I legally transmit on the bands I can talk on? Or is the radio only certified for vhf/uhf, so even if everything else checked out legally, it would still be illegal?

if you have the extra license, and you confirmed your unit has acceptable levels of spurious emissions as per your local government radio comms agency regulation, then it would be legal doesn't matter what device you use, as long as you're following regulations, it would be okay. though if you use a device designed for vhf uhf and you modded it to work on hf, I doubt you'll get enough power out of it

The UV-5K will receive AM, but its hardware cannot transmit AM, only FM. You might break their squelch, but FM coming into an AM receiver will likely be too distorted to copy.

I suspect the low power and multiple harmonics on other bands are due to the band pass filters in the radio that are designed for 144/444mhz will not pass and filter the RF outside of those bands properly. I suppose one could bypass the internal filtering and come up with your own filtering on a small PCB and screw it in at the antenna terminal and then connect your antenna to the other side of your fabricated LP/HP filter. You would have to build a filter and change it out with every band that you wanted to operate on. The other limiting factor is the electrical characteristics of the PA transistor in the HT....will it actually produce one watt or better on the other amateur bands. That will take some investigating, which I'm sure someone is already experimenting with that part of the radio.
