#18 Playing Doom on electronic Price tags (Shelf Labels)

Due to requests, I am uploading a separate video for this.
For those who didn't see these before, they are electronic, e-ink price tags. They started popping up in every corner stores. Main function of these devices is showing the prices of the items, and updating them.
In my previous videos, I shared how to hack these devices, and use them for personal practical purposes.

It was only recently I found out about this tradition of playing Doom on a project's proof of concept as a right of passage. Like Hello Worlds older better sibling, who is a doctor and a lawyer. I'm glad you are keeping it alive.

hahah anything can play doom and its unbelievable that eink display with low refresh rate could play doom this smoothly. Kudo though for your other videos keep up the good work.

@@makersfunduck Oh ok, thank you very much for your time and your answer, I have seen the video before and knew they were slow so I was quite puzzled on why Doom ran so quickly on that E-ink display. I'm glad I got an answer from someone, let alone you!

In the previous videos, I already kinda did. First I uploaded a custom firmware to the e-ink display. And actual refresh rate of an e-ink display is pretty slow. So I made a time lapse video to make it "bearable to watch" The python script that I wrote is taking the screen, and sending it to the price-tag (black&white). So if you want a short answer, e-ink display is used like a verryy slow monitor in this case.

@@makersfunduck Thank you for your answer. It seems I missed the video before this somehow. Been searching for new ideas to use them as I have been asking couple of places to put aside their discarded pricetags. I have an idea about sending simple pictures using a sim card or something and the pics show on the tag displays. My father has alzheimers and cannot use modern phones. When I'm not at home, it would be great to send messages for him to see as a reminders and stuff. Any pointers?

it was a timelapse shot since e-ink display is quite slow. Didn't took the time, but like a few hours lol :D

Why does it the hell have that frequent refresh rate?

I wrote a simple python script to take a photo everytime the screen refreshes. Actual refresh rate is around 1 FPS
