Can you say more about the practice of sizing up timber for efficiency (5:45)? When would you not do it?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, hopefully you could apply it in all cases however it would depend on what you supplier could supply.

What grade/type of wood is the tables specified for? Lvl or radiata pine etc

Hi Mate, all these tables are for MGP10.

Why would you pack the combined counter/strutting if the hangers are connected to it, if the beam deflects so would the ceiling and hangers
@Buildsum
@Buildsum Жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, I get your point however this is what is specified in AS 1684.

Another Q! I require a long strutting beam: two strutting beams supported at 3 points in total. It's not clear to me what is best practice for joining the 2 strutting beams atop the middle support. The beams are likely to be quite tall at 2/190 to 2/290, depending on timber selected, and will have laterally restraint at each support per Figure 7.18. A: Would it be a half-lap joint, like for underpurlins with skew nails (AS1684.2 Figure 7.6)? B: Or, a mitre joint with skew nails per Figure 9.3? C: Or, a butt joint with metal brackets per Figure 9.3 but the through bolts would be up to 300mm long? D: Nail plates sides, skew nails top, laterally restrain with strap? (edit): Is the butt joint out of the question, because the bearing area at the end of the beam must be 70mm, or does the fixing of the joint negate this? (support is 90mm wide)
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, yeah with that 70mm bearing everything but a staggered joint is out of the question.
@action-nerd
@action-nerd 2 жыл бұрын
@@Buildsum this is what I was thinking. I assume staggered in this case means a half lap
@Buildsum

More like a lapped joint like the one in this video at the 1:10 mark kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKizdqiOlqaCmMk

hello there, just wondering how do i determine where best to set my combination beams?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 2 жыл бұрын
It is generally determined where your struts require support and if they can be used to support the ceiling as well. This video may help kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpiwimZ_h7BjaM0

hi, is the combined strutting/hanging beam must has 25mm clearance from the ceiling joists?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray Yes any strutting beam combined or not must have a 25mm packer between them and the plate

Hi John , how do I workout the beam size that’s directly under a load bearing wall of the upper story house
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 5 жыл бұрын
Hi LIna, as far as i know this would fall outside the scope of AS 1684, Basically unless you can transfer the load directly on to a wall in the lower storey you would have to get a Structural engineer to design something for you.

Hey, how would you join hanging beams to combined counter/strutting beam. Would you just use metal hangers, or would it be stronger if you notch the hanging beam over the counter/strutting beam and then also provide the metal hangers?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 8 жыл бұрын
+Az Hi Az these days metal hangers are considered to be sufficient but naturally notching them over the beam would be stronger and also acceptable Hope this helps
