Me and my sister went with family to a party for new years one year. My sister drank a fair bit, and when people started making drinks for her, she accepted more and more, even though they were all mostly different, so she was mixing a LOT of different alcohols. I went outside to smoke and my other sister came to get me. She told me she needed my help cus something was wrong with my sister. I went in and found out she was upstairs. She had locked herself in the bathroom. She was laughing so much, but crying too, hysterical, absolutely out of her mind, and wouldn't let me in. I had to spend half hour convincing her to let me in. I told her i had more drinks for her. She eventually let me in, and i kid you not, i was terrified. She was repeatedly telling me she had died and when i tried to explain that she had not, she was convinced she was in heaven hence why there was plants in the bathroom "because where besides heaven would you have plants in the bathroom?" I tried convincing her gently for about 30 mins, until it all went south as she said "I'll prove it. Im already dead so now i cant die" and dived at the open window! I had to grab her and wrestle her down. I ended up telling her that if she was dead jsut to lie in the bath like a coffin while i find a way to get help. She did lie in the bath, and i covered her with my coat and she fell asleep. She woke up about 15 mins later vomiting loads and loads and loads, but at least by thatr point she no longer thought she was dead thank God.

Literally just learnt about ECT on my psych placement yesterday, media has done such disservice it's a really effective treatment
@hilaryc3203
@hilaryc3203 6 күн бұрын
Shows like this are inaccurate, flippant and disrespectful a lot of the times. The paramedic rolling her eyes and finding humour in his mental health crisis would not happen in real life. But yes, all the movies and public perceptions are that it's a torturous process with patients convulsing on the bed in agony. All for views because humans feed off of that type of nonsense.
@aleksandragieralt7370
@aleksandragieralt7370 6 күн бұрын
@hilaryc3203 from my understanding, sometimes, in the past, it used to be. Some medical staff abused it to coerce and control patients, other times it truly was therapeutic. Modern day ECT is just one controlled shock at a time, so it's not as dangerous, but some patients still suffer memory loss. There's also a huge wait list for it in Canada, from my understanding, so it's not always offered. I don't believe the nurse would be holding the rods to his head either, they'd be electrodes like defibrillation pads.
@hilaryc3203
@hilaryc3203 6 күн бұрын
@@aleksandragieralt7370 It was harsh in the past, absolutely, but the movies have people convinced that it is like that in this day and age. I have heard of the side effects as well. Tricky procedure, but if the proper application aids patients, that's great. I watch the little snippets of these shows on youtube, but I can't sit through an entire episode or series due to the mistakes and liberties they take. Cheers.
@yumni.0334
@yumni.0334 6 күн бұрын
@@aleksandragieralt7370 Yep, historically speaking it was definitely abused, like most medical treatments we have these days. Problem is that people think it's an archaic torture method when it's actually useful. The memory loss is a little scary though.
@carenxatu5962
@carenxatu5962 Күн бұрын
@@aleksandragieralt7370 you are correct about the pads. The goo they use to stick it to your head can be such a nightmare to deal with tho. I love picking so I kinda enjoyed when it dried up and I could try to remove as much as I could before having to shower. As for the wait list in Canada… I didn’t have to wait long but that was only because there was an ECT in our city and my initial psychiatrist was one of the doctors using it. Now the magnetic one is a long wait list as there’s fewer of those. (Also they’re like a diluted ECT. Not as affective but also not as rough on the body and mind.)

It’s rarely just one treatment. In fact I think it’s recommended to have at least 3-5. I’d personally not recommend someone stop at one either, especially considering how the first time is absolutely brutal. I don’t think it’d be good to end the treatment on such a rough note. (Like leaving halfway through a full body massage.) Oh gawd- the pain was something else. Felt like I was put in an empty cement turner thing or something, and then left to be tossed around for hours until my body just couldn’t move.

Because we can’t decide what’s the best thing for everyone. If your an adult you are allowed to make adult decisions, it’s like people with cancer are not forced to have chemo it’s optional - is this guaranteeing death if you go without it ? Yes but is it classed as suicide no? The right to chose your medical treatment or what treatment you have is a human beings right. Not all psychiatric medication works or benefits people sometimes you need to try this that and the other before you find a solution or find that none of them work for you! It’s not black and white we can help and be forced to accept medical treatment. I agree he is delusional and we should be able to help people but tying people down and forcing treatment has its own repercussions long term to mentally ill people too

As an autistic person, hearing Charles even suggest ECT was chilling. It stopped being used because it was ineffective, often harmful, and incredibly cruel. And it was often used against neurodivergent patients. I'm glad to see it at least includes anaesthesia now, but the mention of it was unsettling.
