Great Video Jim One thing- I have a Snapper 550z with the Kawasaki engine. Looking at the wiring diagram for that mower, the L on the ignition switch is for the Electric Clutch and the fuel solenoid. Hard to find much info on my old tractor but I did find the wiring diagram. It does not have lights but I intend to put lights on it. Once again, great information and thanks

Well, in your case, I would hook a wire to the hot side of the starting solenoid, run it up somewheres to a toggle switch, and then to the headlights, unless you have a dual stater on your engine that puts out AC/DC use the AC side of the stater to run your headlights, and of course, the DC side to charge your battery. Jim.

great video Jim - thanks. I am replacing my old snapper mower 8 hp B&S engine and want to replace my old push button start / kill switch key set up with a ignition switch and solenoid like in this video. I plan to get the exact parts you used hopefully. I'm not sure how to connect the charging line back to to battery though - hopefully my new engine will come with instruction on how to do that (most look like they have a connecting female plug with 2 wires in it). I'll email you if I have issues. Thanks for all you do!!
@jimjackson93814 жыл бұрын
Kevin Webb I doubt the engine will come with any instructions if you need help wiring that up let me know usually has a plug with two wires typically one wire comes from the stater and one wire goes to the coil some of the newer ones will have one wire from the stater and one wire going to the solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor, just trace the wires back and see where they go otherwise let me know and I’ll help you through it. @jimjackson93812 жыл бұрын
If the bolt pattern on the starter matches the engine block I don’t see why you couldn’t change them just the first time you started make sure it’s engaging in the fly wheel properly but you can compare the two when you have them off and see if they look the same. Jim

Always a good idea to use relays and solenoids. You can always substitute a Ford starter relay as well, which lasts a lot longer. You can solder the connectors as well as crimping.

@@johncarter-sn4pj if a motor won’t shut off, you have a broken wire somewhere between your ignition switch and the coil itself If you have electric start, this will be easier pull the recoil cover off the top of your engine. Started it take a wire and go from ground to the small little tab on the side of the coil that should kill the engine if it doesn’t then you could have a coil, but I really doubt it. Jim

I just replaced my 12.5 H.P. engine in my 2003 Snapper with a 2018 11.5 Briggs & Stratton engine . This has a voltage regulator & a solenoid operated carbuerator. I hooked the kill wire from the coil on the new engine to the black wire of the ignition switch ( marked M) but the coil will only fire if I remove the kill wire from the coil the coil will operate. Do I need to replace the ignition switch? The ignition switch on the machine now has B, G, M, S, that's all. B is red, S is blue, G is green & M is black. I have no idea how to hook up the carb.? Can you help?

My snapper runs, but cut off by the switch
@michaelanderson87146 жыл бұрын
I have electric start but it's not working. I was told to test the solenoid by jumping across the two post and if it started, the solenoid was bad. It did start so I replaced the solenoid. The mower started after the repair and the next time I used the mower. When I tried to start it two weeks later it wouldn't start. The starter just kept clicking. I had to pull start the mower. With a new solenoid and battery, is it possible the key switch is bad? The run position works just not the start. For shits and grins I just tried to jumper the two post on the solenoid again and it wouldn't start. Is that a sign of a bad starter?
@exinanition23076 жыл бұрын
Michael Anderson, if your engine has overhead valves you may just need to have them adjusted. Over time the valve lash gap can get too large which will cause your engine to have too much compression because the valves open too late and close too soon as well as not opening enough. This effectively causes too much compression which places an undue load on the battery and the starter. This effect mimics a weak battery and/or a bad starter. I have seen many people go buy a battery, which did not correct the problem, so they went out and bought a starter, which also did not fix the problem. Then they go and buy a solenoid, which will also not fix the problem, so they take the engine to their local shop only to find out a quick and simple valve lash adjustment would have gotten them up and running. The bad news is they are now out a load of cash unnecessarily. If you have overhead valves it is worth the time and minor expense to have them correctly adjusted. This is, in fact, a regular part of good maintenance. Then if you still have the problem with starting your mower you can address that issue. It would be a great idea also to check for loose or corroded connections on your wiring. You may just save yourself a ton of money, which, if you are like me, you could gladly spend on something more important to you.
@michaelanderson87146 жыл бұрын
It's a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16HP OHV V-Twin engine. The odd thing about it is that I had no starting issues until I power washed it. I had to pull start it after that and it starts on the first or second pull each time which surprised me considering it takes at least 5 pulls on my 7HP push mower. I'll keep the valve lash in mind but for now the pull start will have to do.
@exinanition23076 жыл бұрын
Then you may want to look at your electrical connections. It is possible the pressure washer may have caused something to come unplugged preventing your battery from being charged. Is your battery discharged? I ask because you said when you tried jumping across the solenoid the second time it just clicked and that is what happens when the battery is discharged.
