I'd say 90% correct as I sell them for Victron, only point I'd add is if your battery voltage is very similar to generator voltage then go with pwm if there is a large or frequent difference then go with mppt unless you're happy to lose alot of the power you generate.

I had a very decent PWM controller on my solar panels. I got somewhere in the 150w range due to running a 12v system. I upgraded to MPPT and now get somewhere in the 200-280w range. It cost 100USD to buy the controller. VS the PWM controller that was name brand cost in the same neighborhood price. -150usd. If your running modern panels, which run in the 30-40v range and try to charge 12v batteries your leaving allot on the table.

@@unicornadrian1358 Precisely, if your panel voltage and your battery voltage are very similar then PWM is absolutely fine, but as soon as your solar/wind voltage is significantly higher than your battery... then you can be loosing large %'s of your power, over 50% in many cases, and MPPT will intelligently buck that down and find the sweet spot knee on the power curve.

I built my own using a 555 timer, a 78L05 regulator, 2 GP transistor, 2 mosfets and a handful of passive components. I needed one for my DIY wind turbine asap, and didn't want to wait months ordering one from China. Adjusted the potentiometer to stop charging at 14V, charging a 12V SLA battery. If it goes over 14V, the power is diverted to the 10 Ohm 100W dump resistor. Works like magic! MPPT is for systems > 1KW. Otherwise, you're wasting your money.

You mentioned the 555 Timer IC and reminded me that there is another open source use. The 555 timer for 12V battery charger. It will work with solar, wind, or other inputs as long as you add rectification with smoothing. The NE556 dual single-chip timing circuit can be used to have both the charge controller and an output controller in one chip and be done on a breadboard.

The interesting difference between pwm and mppt is that pwm, as you said simply switches on and off. The current can never exceed the panel current. MPPT on the other hand when it drops the voltage to match the batteries, is able to increase the current and allow more total power through. I didn’t catch this aspect in the video, so I apologise if you already covered it Rob.

Cool idea I am currently working on a project at the moment that needs constant 35 degree water for the system to operate and wondering would a small wind turbine with a sand battery be a good alternative instead of just heating it up with electric from the grid. Once the sand is at its max temperature that it can store how efficient is blowing cold air through pipes in terms of what percentage of energy is transferred from the sand into the cold air each second. Would this system be an effective way of keeping water at 35 degrees c 24/7

That's a nice summary. Charging can be a bit more involved, though. You may get away with just turning on and off charging to a lead-acid, but especially with lithium polymer, you typically have separate high current and voltage float modes as a minimum, to extend your battery life.

MPPT is about the neither the power source, or the load. It's about setting the load's apparent resistance to the source such that the maximum power flows out of the source and into the load battery and other electronic equipment. MPPT adjust the apparent resistance of the load as it appears to the source. Here is the theory. Take a solar panel, Let's say in full sun, it's unloaded output is 20 volts, and its short circuit currentb is 5 amps: 1) 20 volts/practically infinite resistance = 0 amps, and 20v × 0amps = 0 watts. 2) Or when we short it and the pannel outputs 5 amps. Then 5 amps × nearly zero resistance = 0 volts. And 0 volts × 5 amps = zero watts. At these two extreme there is no power transfered. But there is a resistance in between between ware the maximum power flows from the source and through the MPPT controller. MPPT adjust the apparent resistance of the load as it appears to the source.

Also almost all regulators involving wide range of input and output voltage/current use high efficiency switching regulators. One case PWM would work well is, if the output of the solar cell is matched to the battery voltage. The loading effect of increasing duty cycle tries to bring down the output voltage of the solar cell to the desired charging voltage. MPPT on the other hand boost/buck the voltage levels (through high freq switching regulators) to maintain optimal loading by the battery being charged. PWM is simpler and more reliable in general, but a little bit less efficient and cost effective. The same cannot be said for MPPT controllers on the market(esp. the cheaper ones).

Which he could have prevented had he done more homework. MPPTs are VERY old, the technology, circuitry and theory go back to at least the 1950s. Ampldynes and mag amps are still in manufacture today that were originally designed during, WWII, USING MPPT. Its old, its mature, and it is SIMPLE. Yet Rob missed the mark. Not out of malice or incompetance. He got ahead of himself, he got, for lack of a politely British word, lazy. Robs not an Electrical Engineer. He is a Chemical Engineer. This topic of charge controllers for energy harvesters is widely covered on KZbin BECAUSE it is a mature technology, this is just a summary in the style of his videos and it was fine for that purpose. With solar I prefer mppt, so the solar panel voltage. Can be much higher, for less losses in the wiring,. Pwm is fine if the voltage is close to the battery voltage, I like 2x battery voltage, atleast, or up to 3x for mppt, with pwm say 16-18v for a 12v , and 32-36v for 24 v systems, any more and the losses just multiply, most charge controllers have limits, if the voltage of the PV is pulled down much below the max power output, the efficiency falls fast, a decent mppt will keep it at a decent level, and there is good affordable mppt out there,. We need more mppt that will track turbines, a solar mppt will keep the voltage pulled down stalling the turbine !

I've played around with wind power in Sydney Australia and most of the time the blades don't spin, due to the fact minimum wind speed is required to overcome the internal things going on in the generator. So I get much better and consistent power from solar panels in a built up area like Sydney. MMPT IS actually a buck /boost inverter eg it will incerase the voltage when below change voltage and decrease the voltage when above charge voltage.

Yes you can use pwm on wind turbines but you have to make sure you have a dump load like a heater or somthing when the batteries are full as the wind turbine needs to have a constant load on it to keep it from spinning out of control and causing damage. Some of the larger turbines will just shut down but that is a much more complicated system.I think an mppt controller is a better fit for a wind turbine as it will ajust to the power output of the wind turbine in varying wind speeds as it will ajust to a wide range of varying voltages and covert it to the voltage system you are using be it 12 24 or so on.

That's true with MPPT a friend told me about. That it will take any extra Voltage and convert it into Amps. QUESTION... Can I use the same charge controller that my MPPT Solar lines come into it? I'm going to run both solar and wind generator on my property. Should I use a separate charge controller for my wind generator? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Todd

I understand high efficiency monocrystalline solar cells have a rapid drop in efficiency when used in off angle and defuse (cloudy) light, however lower efficiency amorphous cells have a slower drop in efficiency under the same conditions. Does ANYBODY test solar cells in those less than optimal conditions ? I want to know under what circumstances an amorphous cells will outproduce a high efficiency monocrystalline cell‽ If there is no consistent testing, can we start a site that would show test curves? If you are into that, we will have to come up with a plan for the "standard test condition" What do you recommend?

@@reeferbeleafer9912 yes it does, and by testing conditions how do you define the diffused lighting condition at what angle do you test indirect lighting at. What ever is done for rating a solar panel has to be done at some standard condition. And I would like that condition to resemble more like real life, then at a 90-degree angle on the equator on the sunniest day possible. I'm hoping some of us KZbinrs can come together define a standard and test what we have, plus we may be willing to get, and upload the results, both to KZbin and a specific website for collecting all the results. In that way benefiting all from the knowledge that the manufacturers would never be willing,or even able to coordinate, to get results on. Are you with me‽

Could you clarify something for people? I've live off grid for 8 years and I have 2 charge controllers for my solar panels 12 total and I have a load controller and load coil for the battery bank. My permanent magnet alternator wind generator is wired direct to the batteries. I have 2 Outback 60 amp solar charge controllers and a Xantrex C40 40 amp charge/load controller, the load controller doesn't connect to the wind generator like the solar controller does so mine is wired to the battery and to the load coil..... 4 wires.

@@keithfloyd1178 So you don’t a separate rectifier because there is one in the generator, and the c40 charge/load controller is act as a dump load controller to divert excess wind power from the battery terminals to the dump load. It does this by monitoring the voltage at the battery terminals. It is normal to connect the turbine directly to the batteries and then take the dump load from the battery terminals. The alternative would route the power through the dump controller, but this would create higher loses unless the controller could be located on the shortest route from the turbine to the batteries.
@keithfloyd1178

@@tlangdon12 exactly. I also have had a solar panel hooked direct and the load controller keeps the panel from over charging the system. I'm planning on making a sand battery heater to capture the heat from the load coil and use it at night for hot water or a room heater.

seems like they need a better term for things than direct current, but maybe shifted AC with a 0 or something 0sAC? since it is basically AC waves that are shifted 50% so that the voltage does not shift back the other way, but rather shifts further in to one pole so it only reaches the "zero mark" rather than fully or partially to the other side of the mark of 0 volts?

The other difference between an MPPT and a PWM is their efficiency. MPPT is around 90% and the PWM is around 70%.

As always: "NOT SO FAST MY DEAR!" If for example your battery is empty, and the wind blows lightly, at first the voltage produced raises up, then your switch close, a lot of amps flows (maybe also in a pre programmed amount) and your wind turbine slows down till stop. Than the switch open up again, the turbine without load resistance turns up againg until reached the desired voltage closing the charging switch, will came back again to a full stop (or so)... Then? How do I set the amps to allow to flow not knowing how much wind is blowing? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? And there falls the donkey!
