(183) My front door lock is a joke

A locksmith, ‪@paulspringett6619‬ , told me my frond door lock "Ikonic" is useless ... I show just how useless it is.

Hi Swynndla, well done, and the old lock is certainly better now - at least for a domestic situation. I reckon you WILL swap it out though! BTW the spring with the tight winding in the middle - just to put the record straight - is NOT antibump. They are purely to reduce the chances of the springs winding together in their packets etc. Nothing more frustrating than unwinding springs to assemble locks.

I am very shocked. Maybe people in the US are generally more honest, but even so I wouldn't be comfortable with those rounded driver pins! 😜😜

Nice demo. Those rounded pins are very common in cheap cylinders sold in hardware stores. As you show, they make the tolerances very loose.

That lock was so unsecured, glad you had the parts to make it at least a bit of a challenge. Kwikset should be ashamed of themselves making deadbolts that can be easily jiggled open with a piece of metal. Those rounded top pins were created so that the lock would still function no matter how bad the manufacturing was. They allowed for so much wriggle room that the lock can still function even though the keypins are below the shearline and the drivers are in the core chambers. The rounded ends allow for even more wriggle room. Kwikset developed those pins just for this purpose. Making keypins to suite the poor quality control. Just shameful,

The brand of the lock is Ikonic ... I thought it was their fault and just used a KW1 keyway, but I didn't know it was kwikset themselves. I threw those rounded pin straight in the bin. You're right, just shameful.

I'll warrant that's as good an upgrade as can be with brassy economy locks might even be enough to hold them up for the three minutes (average) it takes to go from ohh whats that noise to "Bear" my land shark chewing their arms off 😂😂

LOL "land shark" - I love it! I'm lucky I had a set of driver & key pins to replace things. Those rounded driver pins went straight into the bin. They make cheap locks easier work from the factory, but sooo much easier to pick open!

Well done and good analysis on why the key didn’t work well with the original key pins! Your front door isn’t unique in being a joke - I’ve tested 20 or so when the hardware is being replaced and they all open in seconds. Good public service video!
